Author William Golding’s novel, The Lord Of The Flies, converts a utopia setting into a dystopian society. The Island is described as a paradise in the first pages, but soon its perfection is turned into a nightmare. The character, Jack Merridew, manipulates the fears of the boys to create the “perfect” tribe. In attempt of this utopia society, Jack creates an island filled with fear. The novel Lord Of The Flies could be categorized as a dystopian novel for the kids have a desire of a perfect organization, causing an illusion of society, philosophical control, and a protagonist who questions this system.
The society of Jack is best described as a organization of savengry. Unsatisfied with the ideas of Ralph to survive, Jack decides to leave
Jack respects Ralph as a leader and another alpha, however deems himself the higher qualified to lead the group; bringing forth a vote for a chief. However, the choir boy followers weren’t strong enough in numbers to counter the seemingly endless supply of little kids that voted for Ralph. After this unexpected result, Jack develops an instant grudge towards his only competition for power. Ralph begins to form a democratic society solely focused on rescue; yet jack has other plans in agenda. Under Ralph’s seemingly boring command, Jack develops other outputs for his primal necessity of dominance. Jack begins focusing on the task of hunting animals and finding weaker beings to prey on. Jack even blatantly leaves the rescue fire to chase after a pig; had he not have done so, the group could have possibly been rescued by the boat passing by during the fire’s absence. Once Jack finally has enough of going in circles with Ralph, he makes the decision to shake off Ralph’s influence and create his own niche. Within Jack’s tribe, lifestyle is greatly different to that of one designed by Ralph. Jack and his followers seemingly devolve into primal beings, as Jack gets his fill of power. Control over others was all that Jack longed for, with a crazed and burning
Jack was a very power hungry young boy. Although he doesn't have any power at the beginning of the novel, he took every opportunity to take the position of chief and was eventually successful. Jack's dictatorial style of leadership contrasted very directly with the more democratic and passive style of Ralph. Jack ruled with an iron fist, allowing no one to question him or his leadership. Jack represented the wanting for a single, all-powerful leader to guide the followers of society using any means he feels necessary.
In a dystopian society, everything may seem fine and normal, but underneath all that is an unstable society that may crumble with the right spark. Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury are two characters who have to face the dystopian world and the nature of humankind. Although, a quest is actually depicted in both, as the characters undertake similar journeys of self-knowledge. In Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the dystopian traits where the boys are deserted on a sterile island show that they are slowly turning into savages and plotting against one another due to the destructive society that they are in. Meanwhile,
William Golding s novel Lord of the Flies significantly symbolizes characters, objects and the setting to represent our world as a whole. Golding uses those symbols to make the island similar to society and to show the difference between living in a civilised society and savagery. The novel takes place on an island during World War II, this is significant since the isolation forms a sort of civilization and community, a sort of microcosm to the real world and to human civilization.
A dystopian novel is a story relating to or denoting an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. 1984 by George Orwell, is indeed a dystopian novel as it describes a nightmare vision of future society which is opposite to a perfect world. George Orwell creates this image using a few different techniques including, the language or style, the setting, characterization, and oppression.

“Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals.” The posed question is if society is controlled by people, or are people controlled by society. Some may argue that society is controlled by people, but if you step into the light is that really the case. If you were to look at society, really look at it, who is being controlled. Its not society itself, sure people affect the directions society turns, but that is a small group of people who represent societies movement and trends. People do not really affect what society truly is. Society is, as said before, a mental concept, the popular, important figures in the world are the physical representation. The world is full of unique individuals, although everyone is under influence of society. It is subconscious, but always there. These next paragraphs will express how society controls people by elaborating on three main ideas that show up in the book Lord of The Flies. Society controls our actions, we learn from society and use it to try to be in control of others, and it is always there and so we have no idea what to do apart from it.
more of what is going on. He says, ‘If only they could get a message
Society exists in a delicate balance of people and structure, when that structure disappears the people go mad and revert to savagery. Even the slightest sway in the balance of society can lead to the loss of civilization. Guiding forces such as religion or government and the structure of family supply structure to a society and keep society in balance. In Aldous Huxley and William Golding’s contemporary novels Brave New World and Lord of the Flies, they express how without family structure or guiding forces society crumbles. A government supplies a backbone for society and instates rules with consequences.
With the emergence of the Cold War after World War Two, William Golding was inspired to write a story that depicts the conflict between the emerging superpowers of the world as the fight between two groups of young boys on a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean. He depicts how humanity can be moral and just, but also how it can be brutal and controlling. The Lord of the Flies addresses the importance of a fair and kind society, and how a warmongering and tyrannical nation gaining too much power could lead to the end of civilization. Golding’s criticism of communism and totalitarianism reflected the ideas of many in Western society during the 1940s and 1950s. The book is connected to these times by drawing inspiration from the brutal and oppressive
“We all have a social mask, right? We put it on, we go out, put our best foot forward, our best image. But behind that social mask is a personal truth, what we really, really believe about who we are and what we 're capable of” (Phil McGraw) one once said. In Lord of the Flies the characters wear a social mask that opposes their true feelings. Written by William Golding, the story revolves around a group of boys who become stranded on an island and must depend on themselves to survive. They elect a chief, a boy named Ralph. However, as the story progresses, the group become influenced by Jack, an arrogant choir chapter boy. Intriguingly, although they desire to be with Jack and join his tribe, the boys remain with Ralph for most of the story. The rhetorical triangle, which analyzes a speaker or writer based on three ideas- ethos, pathos, and logos-, helps many to better understand the children’s actions and mentality; ethos focuses on the credibility and ethics of the speaker while pathos concerns how the speaker appeals to the emotions of the audience and logos is about the speaker’s use of evidence to appeal to the audience’s sense of reason. The boys stay with Ralph because of Ralph’s use of ethos but prefer to be with Jack because of Jack’s use of pathos and ethos which shows Golding’s message- humans were masks.
Humans kill, whether it be animals, insects or people. The justice system is used to try and fix what others have done and in this way they are punished. They are punished in a functioning society with rules and laws, but when all that is stripped away, we are left with mass destruction and humans that kill. The novel Lord of the Flies, published in 1954 and written by Nobel Prize winning author, William Golding, portrays the violence and eradication of a functioning society through young boys stranded on an island. Golding uses the symbol fire and forgetfulness of the need for it to develop the theme of the loss of society and creation of uncivilized destruction.
Lord of the flies is a novel which is inevitably pointing to a racist view of society on how that british boys from a private school will often depict to a savage type of society and resort to violence and barbaric manors in the way they do things - if left alone unattended on an island that is.
At the start of the novel, Jack is a decent-natured conformist, a follower of the rules. However, throughout the course of the novel, his manners deteriorate and his disposition changes, implying that a lack of society can have a negative impact on people. Soon after arriving on the island, Ralph calls an assembly to gather the boys. During it, he mentions that they should have basic rules for everyone to follow and Jack chimes in saying, “We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything so we’ve got to do the right
