1. Why are values discussed when looking at ethical issues? Values are discussed when we look at ethical issues mainly because ethical decisions will be based on the different values people share. Ethics are unlike mathematics and sciences because they are based on subjective opinions rather than objective facts. All opinions are formed from environments and experiences that build a person’s character. Since these experiences will be different, a person’s values will be different as well. Therefore, it is important to discuss values in order to understand the controversies that rise over ethical issues. 2. As we grow up, our parents’ views on what is morality good and bad is embedded into the way we see issues and situations. One ethical issue that splits society into two groups is the death penalty. In the movies Dead Men Walking and Return to Paradise the death penalty is a controversy due to the different perspectives. Moreover, there are ethical issues and ethical theories such as utilitarianism and ethical formalism that applies to both these movies.

Organizations oftentimes use different examples to enforce possible mistakes occurring within the company. Meetings, conferences, training sessions and other means of insightful education of the laws and ethical obligations of one’s job will eliminate any future doubt of what is allowed in the office, hospital, or anywhere an individual will come in contact with patients.

Personal values, beliefs, and principles are necessary for individuals to know about themselves. However, when asked the question, “what are your personal values, beliefs, and principles” the first responses are often a laundry list of characteristics with the assumption that the three words are synonymous. From my experience, when asked this question the list grew longer and I started to wonder what the differences existed between each of these terms. Recognizing these differences is a major component of discovering how I make decisions when facing ethical dilemmas involving directives that may be morally unsound. Hence, I began the search of how the terms relate, their meaning and what my answer is to this question. Since I invested time to find the differences in principles, beliefs and values my long list became more defined. So, the essay will encompass the definitions of the terms, explain two elements for each category, how they relate to one another and how the knowledge influences tough decisions.
