Humanity is living longer these days creating the need for long-term care facilities. Today’s families need to work outside the home forcing their loved ones to enter the dependency of the extended care and long-term care facilities. More and more of the retirees are seeking better facilities for themselves because there are more options. There are more than meets the eyes in the nursing and long-term care that involves families and personnel in the decision making for their loved ones. Long-term care or nursing home was used by someone requiring help with physical and emotional needs, etc. The role of informal caregivers like family and friends are to help those less fortunate than themselves. In the past, there were several generations living under the same roof of the informal caregivers. (Pratt)(2016), “There are several types of services that makeup the institutional and nonistitutional care.” (p20) (Pratt)(2016), “Institutionalized cares are mainly the nursing care, assisted living care, subacute care and housing services because these are in a facility.” (p20)Home care, adult day care and hospice care are services usually in the consumer’s homes. There are institutions that monitor and regulate over long-term care facilities, nursing facilities and acute care facilities.The Affordable Care Act (ACA) or originally known as The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was designed to protect the consumer in a long-term care facility. Although it is still being reviewed as “Obamacare” the true benefits remain unclear. The reductions affect the financial burden to the government programs that help pay for the patients under government long-term care plans. Could there be a better tool to improve the long term care system? A consumer driven long-term care system is a system that caters to the patient’s needs. The provider driven may work for some patients that have that specific need.The effective way to long-term care is to address each patient’s unique needs. (Pratt)(2016), “The components of accessibility to long- term care services depend on financial coverage, physical logistics, location, and the degree of complexity of consumer’s needs.” (P62)The role of illness prevention in long-term care is to help the patient live healthier with less hospitalizations, diseases, and treatments. Some incentives that might encourage consumers to use the long-term care system more effectively and efficiently are financial in nature. They could receive tax deductions, credits or both.
