Anne Hathaway once said, “Loneliness is my least favorite thing about life. The thing I’m most worried about is just being alone without anybody to care for or someone to care for me.” The central theme in the novel Of Mice and Men, written during the Great Depression by John Steinbeck, is loneliness. In this essay I will talk about how the characters George, Lennie, and Crooks were impacted by loneliness. Although George would be able to make it on his own, George relies on Lennie’s friendship as a companion. George says to Lennie, “Guys like us that work on ranches, we are the loneliest guys in the world.” (p.13). Even though Lennie is a handful for George, they will always have that special bond. Their companionship is demonstrated when
Of Mice And Men “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place.” In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, one of the main themes is loneliness. It’s is shown through the book in many of the characters.
To start, George and Lennie chase their dream of having their own farm throughout the story. Their friendship makes this dream possible, which motivates them to keep working towards their goal. Without each other and their dream, they would live a lonely, boring life and become cruel like everyone else. Next, without the motivation of a friend to achieve his dream, George gives up on buying his own farm at the end of the story, even though him and Candy have the money to do it. George shows defeat when he states,“-I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we’d never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would.”(Steinbeck 94) Throughout story, George tries to stay enthusiastic about achieving the dream, but when his only friend dies, he gives up on it. Lennie didn’t play a big role in obtaining the money or land for the farm, but he was George’s only companion to help him push through the tough times of the Great Depression, and the dream helped George escape this horrible reality. Lastly, having a friend like Lennie keeps George from becoming the cookie-cutter man in the Great Depression. Throughout the story, George shows flashes of cruelty and anger, but having Lennie there as a friend, keeps him humble and kind. Having Lennie gives George a responsibility that he wouldn’t have if he were alone. With

Loneliness is a common problem faced by characters in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Contrary to popular belief that there are only 3 basic necessities ( food, water, and shelter) of life, this story proves that companionship is vital for humans in order to live a healthy and happy lifestyle. This is shown through the dreams and changing behaviours of the four main characters in the novel. Candy’s character shows changes for the better as he creates lasting relationships with various characters in the book. After the loss of his dog and lone companion, Candy fears that “ I won’t have no place to go, an’ I can’t get no more jobs.”
Loneliness is a shadowy figure that brings down whoever it attacks. During The Great Depression poverty and a struggle to live was a part of daily life. John Steinbeck’s fictional novella, Of Mice and Men, portrays how the 1930’s created loneliness. Many characters show loneliness distinctly brought on by the living conditions and the prejudice of the Depression Era. Furthermore, this loneliness leads to the shattering of dreams, isolation and a cruel nature in human beings.
The Great Depression was a devastating time for the world. Those who prospered were lucky. Then there were the people who barely made it by doing hard labor for low pay. The low income workers like Candy were lucky to have anything other than the loneliness that eats at them. In “Of Mice and Men”, Old Man Candy was had the worst experience with loneliness.

“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world” (Steinbeck 13). Loneliness affects people in different ways. Some people go out of their way to get attention from others, and others isolate themselves. In the story Of Mice and Men, some of the people living on the ranch are struggling with loneliness themselves. Loneliness affects characters in Of Mice and Men through Crooks isolating himself from others, Curley’s wife flirting with other men for attention, and Lennie worrying about George leaving him to take care of himself alone.
Loneliness is a lot more deadly than people think. Unlike the lyrics to Williams’ song, it can literally kill you. In the book Mice of Men (written by John Steinbeck) each character is dealing with their own type of isolation. Isolation is not only problem in the the book, but a problem in the real world seen with older people, and people that live alone. It can cause obesity, suicide, early death, and a ton of other mental and physical defects.
John Steinbeck, the author of Of Mice And Men, points out that everyone is lonely in one way or another because of this they tend to act out in a negative way to get the attention of their peers, so they can feel as if they have someone even if it doesn't last forever. We see two men walking on a dirt road to a ranch. The two men George and Lennie have been on the move to find work and when they get there they are greeted by many people which later in the story show signs of loneliness. In the beginning of the story we see Lennie walking with George and Lennie has a mouse in his hand and he is petting it and he pets it so hard he kills it.
Loneliness is an unpleasant emotion caused by lack of companionship and large amounts of isolation. John Steinbeck illustrates the consequences loneliness and isolation have on a person in Of Mice and Men. The characters Candy, Curley’s wife, and Crooks face these problems because of their physical appearances. Each character shows the different ways that these harsh feelings can affect someone. It is clear that an evident theme in the story shown by those three characters is that loneliness and isolation negatively impact a person’s mind.
Loneliness “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty” (Mother Teresa). In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, many of the characters fight with loneliness. George, Crooks, and Curley's wife deal with loneliness throughout the novel. All they want is to feel wanted, accepted, and to know someone actually cares about them.
