Of Mice and Men Summative Essay What does being secluded do to a person? It does a lot. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men most characters are lonely and how they act reflects that. Both Crooks and Curley’s Wife’s behavior portrays in who they are and how they are treated.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, he wanted people to know about loneliness. So one person that had a lot of loneliness was Crooks. In the book Of mice and Men “Had his bunk in the harness room; a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn.(66). In the book it said that Crooks has his own room in the harness room. So that means that he cannot talk to anybody about his feelings or his thoughts. Also since he is black nobody really respects him, or wants to talk to him. Also in the book Of Mice and Men “‘Well, I got a right to have a light. During this time, migrant workers were people who just needed a job and leaped at every opportunity, so they will pack up their things and move from job to job. Those three characters are Curley’s wife, the stable buck Crooks, and the old man Candy. Curley’s wife is a beautiful lady who was told by a man that she could become a movie star. That dream was crushed when her mom stool her letters, and when she went out partying and got married to a farmer's son that gives her no attention.

The loneliness of Crooks, Lennie, George, and Curley's wife is shown in many different ways. Crooks is the most lonely guy on the whole ranch. For example, he is black so he cannot go inside the bunkhouse, he is not wanted inside the bunkhouse. He plays horseshoes until it gets dark, then he sits in the barn and reads by himself. The loneliness of Lennie is shown through his actions.

One of the characters that shows loneliness is Curley’s wife. She is lonely because she is the only woman on the ranch. She said, “Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely” (86).

Since he has no one to care for him, he becomes trapped into a world of insanity. He doesn’t care who the person is, he just wants someone to love him and care for him. Lennies actions has gotten george in predicaments that could have resulted in the, getting sent to jail or killed, but instead they run away from whatever trouble he caused.

This story takes place around the 1930s in a time where it was very difficult to make a living, let alone have a social life. Through diction, Steinbeck portrays loneliness in George and Lennie’s professions. As migrant workers, their lives are extremely solitary. They must constantly shift through different areas of California, looking for temporary work. Also, these workers hardly have any fixed home. .

Loneliness is the worst possible thing, because in the feeling of true loneliness, there is no one to comfort, or to help you. Sure, most characters advertise a desire for money, sex and alcohol, some even want things greater than that like a career and a home but at the end of the day, they all just want someone to talk to, someone to confide in, someone there for them.

Loneliness is the theme of the novel, and the name ‘Soledad’ relates to the people that live and work at the ranch.
