School Searches
Sheyenne High School is a safe place to go to school but this is not the case in a lot of the schools in our nation. I believe parents, teachers and students are in agreement that a school needs to be a safe place where students can focus on school work and socialize without the fear of being bullied or being harassed. However, there is some disagreement as to the best policies for making a school safe. Locker searches are one tool schools have to ensure that students are following school policies, but they are not without drawbacks.
The primary advantage of locker searches is their effectiveness. Finding contraband material such as stolen property, drugs or weapons in a student's locker is an easy way to establish guilt and
Both Lynda Barry and Zitkala-sa would agree with the statement “school should be a safe place for all students,” yet both disagree with the statement “school is a safe place for all students”. Both Lynda Barry and Zitkala-sa agree that “school should be a safe place for all students” Barry had a good experience, but Zitkala-sa does know the importance of school system. Lynda Barry describes why she agrees school should be safe by using her school experiences: “I was going to sit at my desk, with crayons and pencils and books and classmates all around me and for the next six hours I was going to enjoy a thoroughly, warm and stable world”(48-50). Lynda Barry agrees with this statement because of her teacher Ms. LaSane, also Barry believes that other students

Personally I think it is a violation of the law in some cases. Schools do have the permission to search the lockers though because of the fact that it is their property they’ve funded it but there has been some situations with faculty searching your pockets and backpacks or even making you take off your clothing. Now the pocket and backpack check is something that they can do when you enter the building but not at random times. They have to have probable cause which means they need a reason to search you meaning the person who is conducting the search or a witness visibly see you with something you’re not supposed to have, or smell a use of drugs or alcohol.
Safety is, ”the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury” (“Dictionary”, n.d.). That is what locker searches provide for schools. With the early case of New Jersey v. T.L.O, a teacher caught a 14 year old girl smoking a cigarette in the bathroom. This led the teacher to send the girl to the principal in which the assistant principal decided to check her bag and locker for more cigarettes or other contraband. The assistant principal found marijuana and a list of people that owed the girl money. The teen took the school to court for
There is a serious sociological advantage that comes with the searching of school property. First, these searches will immediately improve the atmosphere of the school, turning it into a drug, alcohol, or weapon free zone. It’s a fact that students perform better in a safe environment and if said hazards are removed from school grounds, there will be a noticeable improvement among students. The removal of these hazards will also improve the community in which the school and students reside in. Say you live in a town like Fargo,
Improvement in security will also contribute to a safe environment. High schools should implement the use of metal detectors as well as random searches. Although, it may be tedious to remove all metal and coins from your pockets, it will ensure safety. This security measure can be specific to each school. An example being to make the checks random throughout the week or only require it for students to have a late arrival. Random searches can also be specified such as only searching lockers or classrooms. Motion sensored cameras can also be a very effective with safety. In many school’s cameras are only in the hallways and lunchroom, but what happens when violence occurs in a classroom? All evidence will be based off hearsay. This is not an effective way of assessing the incident considering there are 3 sides to every story. Adding motion cameras to classrooms will make evidence accurate. Not only will student-student altercations be recorded, but teacher-student altercations will be recorded. Security guards themselves should also be improved. Security guards should be posted in hallways upon children arrival, during passing periods, and upon school dismissal. Security guards should also be fit enough for the job. “The results indicated that utilization of multiple security measures reduced the likelihood of exposure to property
I did a survey and 50% of my class said that teachers shouldn’t search kids lockers and the other 50% said that they should be able to search them. I asked them why? Most of my classmates said that they should because they might have drugs or weapons, and i agree with that, but what if they had had a valid reason for the drugs or weapon. Example: A kid is walking and a guy walks up to him and tells him to bring him weed or he will hurt him. Then the next day he brings weapon because he's scared and the teachers search his locker and he gets in
Ever wanted to see the cleanest locker ever? I am giving the “Cleanest Locker Award” to my superb friend Alessandro. He spends huge amounts of time on his locker. His locker is never unorganized and if it is he fixes it very quickly. Alessandro is never late to any of his classes because everything is in order. His locker is the only thing that is organized all the rest of his school supplies are everywhere. If it isn't in his locker it is gone forever. Alessandro's locker, the cleanest locker on Earth is receiving this award because he has labels on his locker, everything is in class order, and he has his homework in one spot.
The materials to be used for the modified lockers to perform its maximum should be capable in carrying the materials placed in it and at the same time capable of protecting them. The lockers should also be placed in an area where it can be protected and will be preserved from any environmental factors that could affect its quality.
In conclusion, even though there are many different pros and cons about searching school lockers humans today need to search them if need when needed.Although school locker searches can be bad in some legal
Have you ever had a locker in school or maybe one now? If so, then you will understand that you don’t want the school to do random searches of your personal items. Many school boards of education may think that random locker inspections are good for schools, but I disagree. Schools make it so items stay private by giving us lockers, so why do they do search through our personal items that we store away in our lockers. This essay has information on why these searches should come to a stop.
Lastly, lockers can encourage creativity. Students will be able to decorate their lockers if they so choose. This concept can influence kids to be imaginative and creative with this sort of freedom. For example, a student may like robots, so they can use stick notes to make a pattern of colors to make a robot. The sticky notes can be used educationally as well. If they have homework from a certain period, they can write it down on the way to their next class. This way, when students go to their lockers at the end of the day, they can see what homework that have to do.
Schools need to maintain a disciplined and safe learning environment. There are many disciplinary actions that are in use today and although some can disagree about the amount of discipline that is best for maturing children, it is reasonable to be in agreement that a positive learning environment begins with physical and emotional safety. School safety includes a broad range of matters, including, fighting, bullying, drugs, alcohol, weapons, and etc. Many schools use varying methods in an effort to maintain school safety. Some schools limit school access and require all visitors to sign in. Physical surveillance is another common method of addressing school safety issues along with use of staff and student identification. Among all these
Where as others may believe that this will make the school system more of a bureaucracy. Further more those would also argue that most of the time lockers are hardly involved in the keeping of contrabands. If students have contraband items they are more likely to keep it on them and therefore randomly searching lockers it not as important. The time and energy which would be spent searching lockers could be used in more efficient way.
