The article summaries the life and careers of Matt and Katie Ebenezer, who run Shadow-play a photography and videography company along with Katie’s Company, Katie Finn Photography located in Toowoomba,Queensland, Australia. Matt grew up in a remote, rural part of the Country. As a teen he spent time with David letterman making highlight reels of the late show. Matt’s day job at the time was an IT network administrator at a private girls’ school. He also taught the students how to edit their own videos using windows movie maker. Matt was wrapping up nine year run with the school and was ready to try something new. He dropped back to part time at the school. He took out a loan to purchase his own gear to pursue the idea of wedding videography. After five short months Matt discovered he had surpassed his goal to earn as much from video production as he did from his IT job. With his goal fulfilled he would quit his IT job and jump straight into wedding video production full time. During that time he and Katie become partners in business and in life. Katie maintained her children’s Photography using her unmarried name Finn. Matt soon realized he could make better money making corporate videos and TV commercials. The reason I selected Sheila Pree Bright is largely her work, which not only was amazing but also portraying wide ranges of contemporary society and its flaws. Moreover, she seems to found a way to show what Generation Y’s view on society look like as if it were a documentary kind of like the photos of Dorothea Lange. Taking photographs may seem simple, but being a photographer is more than browsing through the viewfinder and pushing the exposure button. A photographer needs to know how to analyze the scene, speak in words that language cannot, and reach to the souls of people through a picture. During the Great Depression, many photographers captured the scenes of poverty and grief. However, there was only one photographer that truly captured the souls of Americans. According to Roy Stryker, Dorothea Lange "had the most sensitivity and the most rapport with people" (Stryker and Wood 41). Dorothea Lange was a phenomenal photographer that seized the hearts of people during the 1930s and beyond, and greatly affected the times of the Great Depression.

Taryn Simon is an American documentary photographer from New York born in 1975. She was heavily inspired by her father, who had been stationed in the USSR at the height of the Cold War, in Bangkok during the Vietnam War, and had travelled to Afghanistan, Iran, and Israel on government business. As he photographed these trips extensively, Simon was surrounded by photographs of foreign places and events- many of which would come to have a large impact on contemporary American history- from a young age. These photographs were not distant and unknown only to her, but would also have been so for most Americans during the time. Her interest of the relationships between image and text, as well as the systems of categorisation and classification she employs in many of her works is also inspired by her father, who worked intensively with both in his career.

Photographer Dorothea Lange was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on May 26, 1895, and died October 11, 1965 in San Francisco, California. She studied photography at Columbia University and worked at a New York portrait studio until 1918 when she began to travel. Stranded in San Francisco, she continued doing studio work during the 1920’s. With her husband, the painter Maynard Dixon, she traveled the southwest, photographing Native Americans. She believed that the camera could teach people “how to see without a camera.” The social disruption brought on by the Great Depression led Lange to take her camera into the streets where she documented the suffering of the homeless in breadlines and on labor strikes.

My MYP project topic is Photography. I am researching photography because it is a subject that really interests me and that I enjoy. Photography falls under the global context of Personal and Cultural Expression because it is a form of art and a way for people to express their creativity. Throughout this MYP journey I hope to become a better photographer and explore more of Washington D.C.
