My Experience Living Overseas In 1985 I was 21 years old and when I decided to join the United States Air Force. After graduating boot camp, I went to tech school located in Denver, Colorado. I can remember as we checked in I was given a blank sheet of paper and told to write down three places in the world that I might like to be stationed. After finishing tech school, I discovered where I was going taken from one of the three places on my list. My orders were for Kadena an Air force base located in Okinawa, Japan. One of my choices was Hawaii, but it was after all an island, and I was happy with the location. As I reminisce of my time spent in Okinawa, what I remember the most is the beauty of the island, the magnificent blue ocean, …show more content…
Okinawa is surrounded by beautiful white beaches that is blinding in the sun. However, the warmth of the sand under your feet and the little fine textured pieces of sand would be squishy in between your toes. Further out into the ocean it is crisp and clear, and you’re able to see the fish clearly as they swim around and between your legs. The warmth of the sun and the tepid water rushing in over the body felt refreshing. Water activities in Okinawa consisted of snorkeling and deep sea diving. It is relaxing to swim amongst some of the most magnificent sea creatures. Other hobbies were fishing and spelunking, which is cave exploration. It is an interesting hobby because, of not knowing what you will find. For instance, one particular cave I explored I remember finding broken eyeglasses, old shoes, medicine bottles and various other articles. Some caves had more than one level, they were deep and wide it was amazing. It is important to know that spelunking can be dangerous because, of the integrity of the cave and the floor it could be compromised and also the poisonous creatures that reside in them. Even knowing the danger involved it was worth it, for the experience, exercise and the thrill of the
Who would kill you first, a mad hunter craving enjoyment, or an outlaw who has no lawman to stop him? In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, written by Richard Connell the hunter Rainsford becomes the hunted on an desolate island. In the film High Noon, written by Carl Foreman. Even though both High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game have different settings, there are many similarities between the conflicts and their main characters. Both Will Kane and Sanger Rainsford are endanger of dying.
Andres Hernandez was fourteen years old when he moved from Venezuela to America. He moved to America because his father’s job was transferred to America and Venezuela was no longer safe for him and his family due to the lack of security and the multiple riots. When I asked Andres his thoughts on the opportunity on moving to America he answered “ Yes, now I have a chance to achieve my goals”. Andres’s goals are to go to Harvard and attend medical school to become a surgeon. School is very important to Andres and he has experienced two different school systems, in America and Venezuela. When I asked him the difference between schools he responded “ American school’s are easier academically and you have the chance to pick the courses you want
One Australian Catholic organisation that works with refugees and asylum seekers is Catholic Care. This particular organisation helps refugees and asylum seekers in several ways such as the asylum seeker support program and the refugee settlement program. The asylum seeker support program offers hope to all the asylum seekers, whether there in a family or by themselves. Upon receiving hope the asylums can do anything they want, because “you can achieve anything you set your mind to”. They also help move asylum seekers from immigration detention centres to community detention centres. Community detention centres have a more constructive and progressive outcome to help asylums reach their potential. Furthermore the refugee settlement program
1. As I was going through the tour, I saw that healthcare was taken seriously. The immigrants were all checked on their health to see if it was safe for them to come to America. Although it was unfortunate for those who did not pass the inspection, I do think it was a good idea that health officials checked for diseases. Back then illness was a major issue and it was commonly spread to others. I would hate to be a passenger on the ship along with the other thousands of people. For those who did not speak English, there were interpreters available to help translate. I thought that this was good as I did not expect such resources would be available for those of a lower social class. What I found interesting were the many questions that were
Two main reasons contribute to why I would love to become a Housing Ambassador. To help get many prospective and current students excited and involved in campus housing is the first reason. So many people shoot down on campus housing because of the price; however, people do not realize housing is more than just a room you pay for. You live here, study here, and have fun here. There are many events, free stuff, and free food that residence halls and RSA provide for students. I want to be able to show students that off-campus students do not have the same experiences as on-campus students. The second reason I would like to become a Housing Ambassador is for the experience. Ultimately, I would like to become a dean or chancellor of a college in my golden years. Being an Housing Ambassador would provide me with life-long experiences that I could take into my future careers as a business leader, politician, and dean/ chancellor.
The day was finally here. It was November 11, 1990, the day that our family was to go to ¡®Land Of Liberty.¡¯ I heard so many different things about this country called United States of America and I was warned that it would be nothing you¡¯ve expected. The plane ride did not seem as long as it was; partly because I was lost in my own thoughts with hopes and anxiety. I thought about what I will become in this massive country I was headed and how soon I will adapt to this new culture and people.
From ‘children overboard’ to the Manus Island protests: Has the Australian media's portrayal of asylum seekers changed from 2001-2015?
There are many things that make up those who have fought for the America I believe in, courage, bravery, sacrifice, and honor for our country. Many people have fought for us, for the lives of others. It takes a lot to leave families for the war. The thought of not returning must be haunting to most, if not all veterans.
“There are events in life, which can change yourself or your ideas”. For me, the most primary change happens when I moved from Ethiopia to the USA. Why? My mom first answer was “For the better of your education and job opportunity” To tell the truth I didn’t want to the US I was going to leave my family and culture grew up in. Moving to America has made me a better person. Two factors that change was that the opportunities given here are extraordinary. Also realizing the difficulties my parents were going through.
I walked around unsteadily all day like a lost baby, far away from its pack. Surrounded by unfamiliar territory and uncomfortable weather, I tried to search for any signs of similarities with my previous country. I roamed around from place to place and moved along with the day, wanting to just get away and go back home. This was my first day in the United States of America.
yes many people come here wanting change in government and what not but that should not represent all muslims and arabs. My family came here as war refugees we have never once wanted this country to change in anyway. It is often common for many groups/races to want change in certain government aspects and it is common throughout history one book about the immigration to America actually speaks about this in many forms. Now NOT all people that come to this country do not expect change nor do they want this country to change. Many people come here trying to escape certain regimes of theirs prior country and are welcome change, much like my family. Now please when you generalize all people that come here make sure you understand not everyone wants
Born in Saudi Arabia and being Arabian, my mom wanted a better life for me and my family as a whole. However, after deciding to move to America, my parents also decided it would be better to be surrounded by individuals of the same race. This ended up making us move to Alsip, Illinois and being a disadvantage to me as a person for the reason that every mom, dad, kid, uncle, grandma living in the neighbourhood believed African American individuals were the “burnt people of the world”. As a kid, my neighbours and my friends saying a racial slur resembling that wasn’t anything but normal so that attitude to people of different color or race was passed onto me. School wasn’t a problem because it was only arabian kids and white kids. It was when we would go to other towns that were more diverse to visit family friends that problems arose. My dad would say an insult to a African American person at a normal voice level but because he said it in Arabic that individual
My parents raised me in a small town in the Philippines. We are not wealthy, but my parents provided us more than we need. In my country, if a family can eat three times a day, they are not considered poor. That is why some people there tend to leave the country for them to support their families. Since I was a child, going to America is one of my dreams. I immediately took the chance when my parents allowed me to study here. At first, I am so excited but as time goes by, I felt the sadness of being away from my family and friends. That is not enough reason for me to give up. I will become successful here in America because I am not afraid of failures, I am self-disciplined and lastly, I have set goals in
Men and women in the United States of America find censorship helpful when it protects their children from harmful things but they are against censorship when it is used out of context. Parents seem to appreciate censorship more when it shelters children from learning indecent things in the world that could cause danger to themselves or the others around them (in text citation). But censorship is not always good like when it is used in school’s or in books; but censorship can be helpful when it is used on the internet, social media, or in music. For instance censorship is favorable when it stops the epidemic of racism but when censorship stops an individual from saying what that individual wants censorship is not liked by many people in the United States of America ( in text citation).
An environment is a system of living things. The Earth is our environment. The capacity of our environment to offer space, to reap nutrition and to fund energy are all limited. Food, water and other basic assets are strained by the escalating requests of our persistently developing population. We rely on these limited resources for our survival, yet we are quickly extending our population as though they were infinite. This reality is at the focal point of our environmental issues. Despite the fact that the number of inhabitants on earth has been escalating in a continuous manner since 1400, the most emotional increment has taken place in more recent decades. Overpopulation is a standout amongst the most concerning troubles in present times. It is an “undesirable condition where the number of existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of Earth.” (1) There is a natural point of confinement to the population size that can be reasonably maintained by an environment. Overpopulation is the undesirable condition where the amount of the existing human population exceeds this natural limit and eventually devours our planet with the request for more nutrition from less land and water supplies. As the total population develops, enhancing expectations for everyday comforts and improving living standards without destroying the Earth is a global challenge. Our world population is growing at about eighty million people a year, which equates to an average of two-hundred and
