Deep Into the Mind of Fear: Literary Analysis “...Madman!- he sprung to his feet, and shrieked out his syllables, as if in the effort he were giving up his soul”(Poe 277). The short stories, The Fall in the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe, and The Minister’s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne explore fear in a deeper context. Fear is a very common emotion. Fear is the result of encounters with the unknown. The Fall in the House of Usher, shows a very anxious Roderick Usher sending for a childhood friend to console him. The Minister’s Black Veil, is a story about a minister that is surrounded by hypocrisy and has taken upon himself to shield it with a veil. The narrator takes a moment to explain how Usher is acting rather odd. “In the manner of my friend...was struck with an incoherence, [and] an inconsistency” Said quote was explaining how Usher’s isolation is aiding to more problems such as crippled mental health. The Minister’s Black Veil’s Mr Hooper was isolated by the community. Mr. Hooper was visited and invited to many things. “...Strange and bewildered looks repaid him for his courtesy” (Hawthorne 301). The churchgoers were overwhelmed with fear and confusion, and that lead to the isolation between them and Mr.Hooper. Mr. Hooper was also isolated from his lover, Elizabeth. “Do not desert me, may this veil must be between our souls”(Hawthorne 305). Elizabeth is fearful of the unknown and decides to vacate her relationship rather then finding out. When isolation has occurs is starts to eat away at the mind. Consecutively, an intense isolation further leads to mental complications such as insanity. Insanity is defined as the state of being intensely mentally ill; profound madness. In The Fall in the House of Usher, Roderick Usher went into a state of insanity after the “burial” of his sister. “Not hear it?- Yes I hear it”(Poe 276) He started to hear sounds.
