The learning process is fundamental and we learn so much from our experiences. Better said, our literacy and understanding of anything comes from sources or sponsors. It can be a muse or stress from society telling you to take action. Multiple sponsors can further fuel a literacy. Deborah Brandt states that sponsors are “any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy—and gain advantage by it in some way.” (46) The sponsors in our lives can make situations difficult or easy and overall stimulate literacy. Literacy to me is the understanding of a subject to the extent that one can analyze and/or make solutions. This can include finding cures or …show more content…
Type 2 diabetes is a very serious chronic illness that affects the metabolism of carbohydrates in the body; it is also one of my main sponsors for studying medicine. Excess sugar, or glucose, is not metabolized which is dangerous and can be deadly. As a pre-med student, it can be difficult studying illnesses that my relatives have. The illness progresses slowly and is emaciating. My father used to be a hyperactive, corpulent man with 2 jobs and no worries. We first found out about his illness when he was feeling like he was dying. His blood-glucose level was about 250 mmol/L. That was enough to die. I was about 5 or 6 when he found out about his condition so I really did not understand the severity of it. I did not know why he had to go to the doctor so much and why he had to get so much blood work done. It was torture to watch, especially as a child who had a fear of needles. I may not be able to move mountains or cure diabetes by myself, but I want to do research for a cure. Medicine is a study that is imposed and expected on many, but I choose this path. I want to be able to help people like my father and in effect children with fathers or mothers like mine. It isn’t fun to have to see someone having to prick their finger to see if they are good enough to have a meal, even less my own father. This fundamentally leads to my seat at the University of Miami and acted as a sponsor to the literacy in science and medicine. I want to be a biochemist who does research to find ways to end many chronic illnesses. There is so much that is unknown about illnesses to this date that I would love to work on. To do this, I have to read a lot and really understand the fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology. It will be a long and strenuous study to fortify my literacy, but I will strain myself to
Literacy is having an understanding that oral language can be brought to life through print. Thoughts, that are translated in text or through writing, are used to inform, entertain or persuade the reader. Literacy (the ability to read and write) is a much-needed tool to survive in today’s society. Without it, one would become a life-long dependent. The building blocks for becoming a successful reader begin with emergent literacy.
I 've loved to read and write ever since I was taught my ABC 's for the first time. It 's been a huge part of my life in a lot of different aspects. I learned how to read when I was three years old because I went to a daycare where I was the youngest kid and the only one who couldn 't read. Reading and writing just stuck with me after that. After I started reading better than my older daycare-mates, school was ready for me to conquer. The school put me with older kids right away and I was in English class with 3rd graders when I was in kindergarten. It helped me out with making friends and I always got along with older kids better
In Deborah Brandt’s article, Sponsors of Literacy, she defines sponsors as, “… any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy—and gain advantage by it in some way” (pp 166). There have been a few people in my life who have done exactly that; they helped me gain knowledge on many topics in hopes that I would find it informative and be able to better the world around me.
People are exposed to literacy all throughout their lives through learning and experiences. The way one is exposed to literacy varies from person to person. In Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy she states that literacy is not only the ability to read and write but also one’s ability to apply those skills to daily life. One gains much of their literacy through the different sponsors they experience. A sponsor is “any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy and gain advantage by it in some way” (46). Throughout Brandt’s essay she gives examples of different types of people who experienced different upbringings with a variety of sponsors.
Since a child going up, literacy was not my strong suit. Literacy throughout my life seem not to cope with me. Later as I grew up, literacy meant to me that it is one’s ability to read, write, and speak. More importantly there is a more meaning of literacy, meaning that not only writing, reading, and speaking, but able to understand, analyze, and communicate with other peoples’ ideas. Soon enough literacy has made an impact on my life, it has been and will be a lifelong process. Literacy will always be with me, starting from my past and ending in my future.
How has literacy impacted my life? From learning to read sight words and write sentences to progressing all the way to thick chapter books and lengthy essays, literacy has been a long and incredibly significant journey in my life. Literacy has been a fantastic and influential adventure because of exciting personal experiences that first took root at age two, the inspiration of an elementary school teacher, Mrs. Peake, and memorable events including the Accelerated Reader program and discovering my favorite childhood book series.
I define literacy as being able to express my thoughts and emotions. I know everyone has different opinions and emotions. Therefore, everyone will write differently and read in a different pace. Also, everyone likes different types of books, for example fiction or nonfiction. As a result, everyone’s literacy journey is unique. Everyone has a different definition when it comes to literacy which is what makes it special. Some prefer to read and others prefer to write. It all depends on personal preference.
One of the most eye opening experiences of my life occurred in the second grade. I would have never thought that doing one simple assignment in elementary school could change my whole perspective on literacy. My understanding of literacy was sparked when I had read my first real book. I remember sitting down on the vividly colorful carpet day dreaming about playing Mario Cart on my Nintendo 64 while everyone was obediently listening to the teacher read a book out loud. It wasn’t that I did not know how to read or listen, I just didn’t care. Reading to me used to be tedious because I did not understand the purpose of it. I did not grow up with the luxury of my parents reading to me because they weren’t literate in English, so I had to figure out for myself why literacy is vital in everyday life. My ongoing learning experience with literacy can be traced back to one simple visit to library.
What does it mean knowing how to read and write. I take literacy skill very seriosly that will help me in the future. I know such skills don't come easy, it requires hard work, sleepless night. The reason why I go to school is to make mistakes, correct them and not to repeat them again. I always improve my skills through curiosity to learn something new, not being able to read and write would keep me in a darkness without seeing beautiful things that surround me.
Today I began working one on one with “Student M.” Mrs. Gault provided the reading material for me to begin my assessment of “Student M’s” reading abilities. Before starting my assessment, I reviewed a list of words with “Student M.” The list of words were comprised of sight words that students on a second grade reading level should be able to recognize. The first time I went through the list with “Student M” she correctly identified four out of thirty-five words. The second time I reviewed the word list, “Student M” was able to recognize two or three additional words. “Student M” struggled when she read the passage. Her main problem was that she did know many of the words and she had problems when she
While I’m in class, I will make sure that I listen to what my instructors are saying and how they say to do something. It is also very important to take notes on what is being taught in the class, and whatever your teacher may right on the broad. In order to receive a passing grade and really pass the class I will have to complete all of my homework.
The first challenge was to understand what the essay topic is going to be about. When I began to write the literacy narrative, I thought about my first book that I read. However, I didn’t know if I could expand the story and add some vivid details. I decided to switch my topic and write about the TOEFL test preparation, since that had happened couple years ago and it was still fresh in my memory.
The concept of literacy confused me. The fact of learning to read and write at the same time both baffled me and intrigued me. As I approached the classroom I hesitated, wondering whether I was capable of holding up my own weight. The image is still clear; A scanty 4 year old boy reaching for the puzzle shaped carpet. I ended up sitting down on the salmon coloured puzzle piece, crossing my legs and hoping to pass unnoticed. In Angola, the most common language spoken is Portuguese, which was ideal for my learning. I was born in Brazil, but 5 months later I moved to West Africa. As a 1 year old, there is no such thing as adaptation, however, I had no language skills at all, which makes this story interesting. English and Portuguese were my first
Literacy is defined as being literate, that is, being able to read and write in a language. My personal experience with literacy began at an early age, at the age of 4 when I began to sit and read words and letters in the back of my mother’s car. Soon enough, she would bring me a magazine called “Majed” which, in the 90’s, was a popular magazine. With this, I began even more interested in reading and writing and reviewed every word in the magazine associated with each of the short pictured stories. It was the first memory I deeply recall of literacy and it was what laid the foundation for my personal love of reading and writing. The methodology used for this is an interview. There are three interviews which are analyzed and brought together in the form of a narrative. This narrative serves to better explain the emotions and thoughts that the interviewees had about the idea of literacy.
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” (Mahatma Gandhi). Learning is essential to grow as an individual and expand your knowledge. Literacy is key for broadening our mentality and a person will only benefit from it. For me, especially, literacy has been essential for my growth and the challenges I have taken on. Everything in my life has depended on my knowledge and skills that I have acquired, and I am continuously developing new techniques.
