Literacy Night In Schools

Professor Deborah Brandt’s research article “Sponsors of Literacy” is about the importance of the sponsors. According to her, sponsors are the ones that provide the sponsored the access to literacy. Brandt interviews about 100 people and through those interviews, Brandt makes three main points regarding sponsors. The first one is about how different kinds of sponsors can produce different kinds of performances. The example that Brandt shows to the readers is the difference in the background of Raymond Branch and Dora Lopez. Branch is able to be exposed to the more powerful sponsors, while Lopez cannot. In Sponsors of Literacy, Brandt argues that individual and group literacy stem directly from sponsors in the form of role models, educators, media, and many more sources of language and communication acquisition. Brandt claims that sponsors, through intentional or unintentional actions, influence an individual’s ideologies and relationship with literacy. Through the interviews which Brandt conducted in the 1990s with people of varying literary and sponsorship experiences, Brandt discovered that an individual’s access to literacy opportunities: libraries, computers, or traditional education, had a monumental impact on their career, ability weather political or economic upheavals, and capacity to function profitably in society. Probably one of the most important issues when it comes to Family/Community Partnership is trying to get the families/community involved in what we are doing. By engaging parents, it will help us to see what we are lacking and what we need to do in order to have our families fully engaged. I feel that if our families/communities are not engaged in our program then we need to reevaluate in order to encourage their participation. By reevaluating our program we can further access what we need to work on. If parents/communities feel that they are not valued as part of our team, they won’t engage in our program. Both the parents and the community play a big role in the education of our children. Parents are their first teachers and the communities have valuable resources for the children.

An educator could find out about family practices and cultures, and include resources, experiences and strategies that reflect the diversity of children, families and the broader community.

- Talk with and explore the culture, heritage, backgrounds and traditions of every child within the context of their community and expand on this by getting the children to engage in these cultures actively for example learning a dance from a child’s culture.

This year's Just Read Florida theme is Civics-Literacy related, "Literacy Changes Our World". Our Cambridge students participated in an outreach program which combined the 2 subject areas. In LA, Melmood's students brought a copy of their favorite novels and wrote messages inside the covers to the next reader sharing their thoughts. In Civics, Beitz's students made children's books which explain the Bill of Rights in terms that 7th graders can understand. Santangelo even had some extra books from her project. We took the boxes of books to Silver Lakes Middle yesterday, a school chosen for its low SES band of students.

Regarding the literacy program at my high school, we have very few strengths. We do not perform with an outstanding rating in any of the characteristics on the Literacy Program Analysis Survey. The characteristics we rated adequately in include direct instruction, teacher modeling of processes, differentiation, and opportunities to write. We are most successful with direct instruction; our language arts department directly ties direct instruction to modeling. As one of the two language arts instructors, I can say with certainty that our department’s approach to writing instruction relies on the teacher modeling thinking processes. My senior class, for example, just finished their first critical analysis paragraphs as an entire class. We used our SmartBoard to compose compelling topic sentences, to identify the best possible pieces of support, and to develop our skills in elaboration. Students wrote their paragraphs down as we worked collaboratively, and they kept these to use as models for their own responses to a new article. As part of our daily instructional processes, all teachers are required to begin their classes with brief questions about the day’s objective to which students reply in written form. In this way, students are given opportunities every day to learn how to organize and elaborate on their own ideas

We will house kids who are products of all facets of society. For example, children of immigrants, children who have affluence, children who are loved and cared for greatly and children who may be in a situation of neglect. Teaching is about reaching out to each student, helping them to overcome challenges and be the best that they can be. It seems that an increasing number of these challenges may not be academic in nature. I believe that conquering these challenges actually beings with the little community forming within our classrooms. As teachers we have the obligation to teach our students how to have respect and compassion for one another. How to be on the same team and work together, no matter each person’s background.

Creative Kids Christian Learning Center, Wesley Campus, is the agency I picked to do my presentation. Creative Kids is one of two childcare centers that sets out to serve children ages six weeks to 12 years of age. They are a Christian facility that believes that with God anything is possible. Their curriculum is based off of social and intellectual development, in which, supports the child’s physical, psychological, social, intellectual and spiritual needs. As a whole they believe that “No child should be left behind.” There is a diverse group of children enrolled at Creative Kids. The educators all support the different ethnic groups culturally, by implementing important aspects of the children’s cultures in the daily activities. I however

In order to encourage parents to be involved in their child’s school and education schools could offer orientations that focus on multicultural education and how it is incorporated. Library books, articles, and videos about multicultural education should be made available to all parents and family members of the ELL students. There should also be some type of bulletin board made available to families that has notes about upcoming events, workshops, English language classes for adults,

When dealing with family, we will have family nights every Tuesday where the students will have the opportunity to bring the family out to join in on the sessions. This way there is an opportunity for the family to participate in group sessions with the students. This will also be award night to also encourage the family to participate. Although all students will be provided with an award, because we feel that if we show the students that they are making progress no matter how small, they will be encouraged. We must continue to lift them
