Their unapologetic and unabashed way of making fun of anything and everything is what has allowed the show to continue for so many seasons and also allow the viewer to draw their own conclusions. The Simpsons writers entertain the audience of voters and the common people by understatement. They are making light of something that is a big issue. The fact that there is so many people in power that are corrupt and who are in control of our government is something that could deeply affect how our world is.

As a child, I owe credit to Lisa Simpson for setting me on the path to social justice, activism, veganism and Jazz.Foremost, she was my gateway drug to feminist rebellion. Lisa came before the guerrilla Girls, Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis and Naomi Wolf. Why do we overlook this trailblazer and feminist thinker? The beloved heroine is actively fighting many injustices for girls during her 20 year existence, outstandingly in one of my favorite Simpsons episodes, “Lisa vs. Malibu Stacey”. The episode follows eight year old Lisa’ as she is gifted a talking version of her favorite Barbie inspired doll, Malibu Stacey. Like every girl in Springfield, she is initially overjoyed to receive the gift, unlike other girls she becomes gravely disappointed to discover Stacey’s aspirations only amount to boys, cheerleading, and shopping. Embarking on an existential journey, Lisa questions herself and her community about their relationship to the doll and the world. These references and parodies of classical work have great value because it often reminds people of literature or films they may have forgotten. They state that this “naturalizes our own cultural forgetfulness”. This states that people often tend to forget about classic literature because they are not affected by it in their day to day lives but The Simpsons remind people of these great works and make them relevant again and this is something that has great literary value. The book states that the writers don’t just make literary references but cultural ones as well like “Lisa’s breakfast cereal box is called “Jackie-O’s” I probably don’t have to spell out that this cereal exploits the name given to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis by the popular press--and even the popular press recognized Jackie O as a woman of distinctive beauty not to mention remarkable connections, power, and influence”. Anyway, the episode continues with lisa playing with her doll pretending that Malibu Stacy is giving a speech at the U.N, but Lisa is disappointed when she realizes that the new and improved doll says sexist remarks such as “don’t ask me, I’m just a girl” and “let’s buy make up so that boys will like us!”. Lisa goes on a rant about how “millions of girls will grow up thinking that this is the right way to act! That they cannot be anything more than vacuous ninnies...!”and gets really mad when Bart does not understand why she is so upset. The difference in communication styles is shown here as Lisa is more adept with words than Bart is as Bart can only give Lisa a stupid reply like “that’s what I was going to say.” This illustrates the stereotype that girls are more expressive and sensitive than boys are. On the other hand, Marge plays the more traditional housewife as her mind never delves into issues that are not relevant to the domestic center; she is not privy to relevant discussions on social issues like Lisa and cannot understand why Lisa is so upset. She said that Lisa had been speaking up “an awful lot lately.” This suggests that typical lady-like behavior does not include speaking out and that the mother should enforce positive female behavior. As different crazes and fads are appearing each day, we have come to expect them to simply fade away as the hype passes. However, veganism has stood the test of time in our fad society and is still increasing in popularity. Originally only thought to be a religious lifestyle, many people from different walks of life are becoming vegans. However, this poses many questions and sparks heated debates, mainly from omnivorous people who believe that veganism is against life’s natural order. Vegans, then, argue against an omnivorous lifestyle by bringing up facts about humans’ biological makeup and how humans are, contrary to popular belief, herbivorous by nature, not omnivorous. While both sides present good arguments to some, the veganism lifestyle contains more benefits and less harmful cons than an omnivorous lifestyle.
