During the Civil War, was Abraham Lincoln the cause or the cure? Abraham Lincoln, the man that hit right path toward life while earning respect. He worked hard most of his life and at law, and as a president to keep our nation in one during the Civil War. He had the mindset to get where he needed to go. He lived a long and resentful life full of problems that he fixed. Lincoln’s early life. As quoted from History.com, “Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a one-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky” (“Abraham Lincoln”), to his parents Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. They moved around and eventually settled in another small cabin the backwoods’ of Indiana. As said by biography.com, “Where the family "squatted" on public land to scrap out a living in a crude shelter, hunting game and farming a small plot,” (“Abraham Lincoln biography”). Lincoln’s father was able to buy the land that they had settled on. A year after his mother’s death (Nancy Lincoln) he grew far apart from his father. Abraham had a dad and a mom. His mom’s name was Nancy Lincoln who died at 34 when she got milk sickness from a cow. His dad’s name was Thomas Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln moved three times. They first moved to a another log cabin in Kentucky that wasn’t that far from their old house. Abraham was only a toddler when his family packed their bags and moved. Then, they moved to Indiana in 1816 because Indiana was about to join the Union and become a state. Abraham Lincoln had a massive effect on the war because of the Emancipation Proclamation. “The Emancipation had an immediate and profound effect on the course of the war” (1). Proposed in the summer of 1862 and established in January 1, 1863, the Proclamation established slaves in the South did not have to serve in the Confederacy. It also established African American people in the north to be able to serve in the Union. Nearly 200,000 African American citizens served in the Union. This gave the Union more leverage in the war to win. The Proclamation served as the pathway for the 13th amendment to emerge. If Abraham Lincoln did not sign the proclamation the Union might not have won the war, the country today would be separated into two different countries.

To The Union, the reception of Lincoln was even more important than the abolition of slavery. Lincoln did not want war with the South, and told them that the government would not attack. But if they were to solve his debt by his oath of office, a division, if necessary, would be prevented by militarily force. Jefferson Davis, Lincolns’ opponent, was the leader of the southern states and called himself president of the Confederate States of America. In the Civil war there were many leaders of both sides. The leaders of the union were Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses .S. Grant, and on the confederate side there Jefferson Davis and Andrew Jackson. They all had an immense part in the civil war, On pages 496-509 you will read all the things Lincoln and Grant did for the union. For example, Abraham Lincoln emancipated all the slaves in the confederacy, which now gave a new goal of the union to abolish slavery, and gave the union more soldiers. Grant used strategy and force to defeat the confederate, by issuing the total war and sending Sherman on the march to the sea, consequently destroying everything the south had even the civilians who had no part in the war were affected. Due to his bad eyesight, Thomas Lincoln would make his son do the majority of the work. When he could, Abraham Lincoln would spend his free time reading books far into the night. Lincoln did not have much education due to being a poor farmer, but was very intellectual and known for his honesty. At age 21, due to health and financial problems, Thomas Lincoln again moved his family, this time to Illinois.
Before the Emancipation Proclamation was passed, the Civil War had been going on for two years. UNION VICTORIES The Emancipation Proclamation was signed on September 22, 1862, but it did not take effect until January 1, 1863 (Emancipation Proclamation 1863). This took place during the Civil War, which was fought between the Union States and the Confederate States of America. The Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves, because it only applied to the areas that the Union had no power in. It did not apply to the Southern area that the Union already had taken control of or occupied. It also did not apply to the slave states that were already a part of the Union or the border states. It applied only to the areas that were under the control of the Confederate States. The Union Army had no control there, so they could not enforce it (CORNALE NOTES). The Emancipation Proclamation had a small impact practically, but had a larger symbolic effect, and led to the Thirteenth Amendment following the victory of the Union in 1865 (Emancipation Proclamation 1863). In the mid-1800s, in the second Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln identified the civil war as religious war: it is a will of God. He stated, God “gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe”; therefore, “with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in” (Lincoln). Opposite to Douglas ideas that slavery is natural, secular, and constitutional right, Lincoln asserted anti-slavery, linked to Evangelical Protestantism (Magagna). Against evolutionism, he appealed the religious morality, thoughts, and behaviors in order to demolish institutional slavery in the United States (Magagna). In his biblical terms, Lincoln justified the civil war as the providence of America, the punishment of the sin of slavery, and the promise of national redemption. That is, Lincoln asserted “no bargain with the South and Slavery” through the religious languages (Magagna).

The Civil War was a war between the union, and confederate states in the United States that occurred from 1861-1865. Many people believed that the Civil War was about slavery and southern states right to defend their states’ rights. The confederates were fighting for their liberty and independence under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, who they felt was a tyrant. However, the union, was fighting to preserve their territory, that was created by their founding fathers from chaos and dismemberment. President Jefferson Davis believed that the civil war was based on the confederate rights to secede from the union. Jefferson also felt that Abraham Lincoln was to blamed for the start of the civil war, since he was against slavery. Lincoln’s intended goal was to preserve the union, he claimed slavery was not the reason. “If I could save the union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all slaves I would do it, and if I could slave it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that (Shi &Tindall, 2015, pg.465)”. Lincoln told everyone that if the southern states were to return to the union that slavery would still exist. However, many people believed that Lincoln wasn’t being truthful.
