To anyone who is asked about the story of Frankenstein, it is simply about a monster and a mad scientist who wanted to push the limits of sciences and create life by himself using electricity. But as we read Mary Shelley’s novel, we discover a more complex questioning of the limits of what makes someone human. The story being told by Victor Frankenstein to Robert Walton presents it as the cruel and frightening tale a man recounts to another about the daemon he created. Yet it could also be seen as the story of a being looking for a parent, or a mentor, to show him the way to a normal human life.

In Shelley’s Frankenstein, the monster is portrayed as a grotesque abomination. However, as Hopkins states in Contending Forces, the cultural and geographical situations, or lack thereof, in which one matures in play a crucial role in the proper development of one’s mind and brain. The monster is simply a product of circumstance. The lack of social interactions alongside geographical isolation propelled the daemon to be alienated from society, ultimately resulting in a lack of morals and an underdeveloped psyche. By being a culmination of his surroundings and experiences it is revealed that the true monstrous entities are the factors that leave the daemon predisposed to fail in a modern society. Arguably, Victor created a being, while the circumstances that said being was placed in “created” a monster. This pursuit of knowledge drives the plot of the novel, leading Victor to create the Creature in his attempt to break down the mortal barriers that surround him and unlock the secret of life. Robert Walton’s quest for discovery leads him to the North Pole, far beyond the reach of Humans at that time. Ultimately Victor’s thirst for knowledge and scientific discovery did him more harm than good with Victor’s hatred of his creation driving him to death. For a monster to develop, one must have been formerly exploited either by an individual or their society. The creature is not only a physical product of science, but his atrocious behavior is also an explicit result of Victor’s actions toward him. The creature was not born a monster, but slowly morphed into one as he experiences violence and rejection from his society.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein tells the tale of a man whose entire life turns to misery after creating what he calls a monster, a demon and a fiend. However, the real monster in this story is pride and the feeling of superiority. Although the core narration starts with a story of how Frankenstein’s father meets and marries the protagonist’s mother, she first has to endure the death of her father called Beaufort. Thus, the novel already begins as a tragic exposition. As a result, the narrative fiction ends with almost everyone including the protagonist and the antagonist as dead.

It is traditionally argued humans differ from other life forms because humans have free will, being able to differentiate between right and wrong, and are aware of their own identity. However, in the novel, Dr. Frankenstein’s ingenuity results in the making of a creature, for lack of a better word, that possesses free will and self-consciousness. Consequentially, traditional definitions utilized to differentiate human and beast fail; prevailing boundaries between human and machine further blur since Frankenstein is mostly out of human tissue and organs.
