The introduction of the story starts off with Patel talking about him and how he got the name ‘Pi’. Piscine Molitor Patel is named after a big, clean swimming pool in Paris that left a big impression on Mamaji when he was younger. Everyone in elementary school made fun of Patel because of his name, they would call him “Pissing Patel”, he decided to make a change, so when he went off to high school, he thought of a new nickname ‘Pi’. When he would introduce himself he would explain his nickname with math equations (π)3.14 etc to give his point on how it is pronounced.
There is a foreshadowing device in Piscine’s name because the pool that he was named after was “as big as small oceans” (19) and he survives later on in the Pacific Ocean which is the largest ocean on planet Earth. Everything that he was taught as a little boy, all of the lessons on swimming made sense because it was all useful in the survival. Pi was the only one who knew how to swim in his family and it seemed like faith that he only survived the big storm. Although there are normal ones, as an example-grief-the reader observes Pi and Richard Parker be the same, human or animal, they are the same. In the beginning of the story, Pi suffered from teasing because of his name until he came up with the nickname Pi, “I would have taken any name over ‘Pissing… And so in that Greek letter… I found refuge” (22-24). Kids thought it was funny because when you pronounce his first name sounds like you’re saying “pissing”. But that doesn’t stop him from learning and discovering new things. Being very curious, Pi begins to study many different religions, such as Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism; Even though his father says “Believing in everything at once, is the same thing as believing in nothing.”
In the book Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the protagonist becomes marooned in a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with only several zoo animals and his analytical mind to keep him company. Piscine Molitor Patel or otherwise known as Pi Patel, uses religion as he escape route and his knowledge of animal behavior to turn a horrendous ordeal into something survivable. Yann Martel states that out of all 100 chapters of his novel, that chapters 21 and 22 are the core of his book. These two philosophical chapters alone help define Pi’s story and how everyone should believe ‘the better story’. Even those these two chapters are very short, they are the heart of the novel because it highlights religion in general, the qualities of an agnostic or atheist individual and how everyone should choose to believe in what Martel calls “the better story” (Martel 63).

In Life of Pi by Yann Martel the main character is Pi Patel, a boy who gets stuck on a lifeboat with a few zoo animals after his boat sinks. The story focuses on his experience on the lifeboat and his journey to discover who he is. Pi faces many conflicts, has many varying personal beliefs, and experiences changes throughout the story. First, the most important conflicts are within his journey on the lifeboat and his experience with religion as a child.
B. One of Pi’s traits is that he is religious, this affects his actions because he is constantly praying to his Muslim, Cristian, or Hindu God. Pi is also very intelligent, this affects his actions because his knowledge of animals helps him domesticate Richard Parker. C. When comparing Indian culture to the movie Life of Pi there was many similarities to take note of, whether it had to do with religion, customs/traditions or the lifestyle it all related back to Indian culture.
