I remember when I borrowed my mom’s cell phone before heading out on a fishing trip with friends. My phone was broken at that time, nonetheless, I was ecstatic that I would get to use my mom’s brand new cell phone during my trip. I knew that the cell phone was my mother’s favourite, therefore I had to be extra careful with it. I had brought the phone with me on the boat in case of emergency, amid the fun I had forgotten the phone being in my pocket. I had gotten the fishing line stuck on the side of the boat, so I tried to remove it, realizing afterwards that the phone had fallen in the water from my pocket. It did not take long until I got exasperated, just by thinking about the ramifications of my careless actions. I had lost my appetite and sleep trying to muster up the will to convey the truth to my mom. As the days passed by the camping trip came to its conclusion, during those days I felt sick to my stomach regarding this situation. I finally conjured up every bit of strength inside myself to tell my mom of what had transpired. She was mildly mad at first, taking into account of how sorry I felt, she forgave me the next day. Adversity had caused me to battle tremendous hardship both physically and mentally, it instilled great courage and will in myself, so I would not be reluctant to take responsibility in the
Yann Martel`s Life of Pi follows A journey of a young man and a Bengal tiger as they travel across the ocean in a lifeboat.Director Ang lee made many consider the book to be beautiful, but virually unflimable.Being needed to told on screen Ang lee discerned very adeptly, about Life of Pi ‘’if there is will there is a way’’.
In chapter 63, Pi discusses a daily schedule that he has created for his life on the ship that is considered to be “one key to my survival.” (page 190) On his schedule, it shows that he prays at least five times every day. The abundance of prayer helps anchor his schedule, as well as keep him busy throughout the day. It also helps to normalize his life on the life raft.
Hardship is seen in some degree in everyone’s lives. It pushes us to the maximum, makes us hit rock bottom. These experiences change us, though not in the same way. Some souls rise to the occasion and rise out of the ashes, while others become stuck in the endless downward spiral. Although some individuals are crushed by the adversity, other are about to overcome it and become better people and lead improved lives.
Of course, adversity is ultimately inevitable in life. When a problem arises, individuals are generally astonished at the response to the complexity of the situation. This makes adversity becomes a wall that is unable to be broken down. However, there is a point in an individual where their instincts can reveal the truth, “it’s part of life to have obstacles, it’s about overcoming obstacles, that’s the key to happiness.” Qualities and characteristics of individuals are revealed during the hard times. These talents that are within us, that are usually locked up to give the ability for an individual to unlock the adversity that it created. In this sense, an individual true color and nature can be revealed leading to a new understanding of the capability to overcome adversities.
Humans generally face struggles in their lifetime. Such struggles could be within themselves or with someone or something else but commonly stem from some sort of opposition in lifestyle. In Yann Martel’s novel, Life of Pi, Pi’s passion for personal survival conflicts with his moral obligations to himself internally, morphing his external character.
Due to Pi’s devotion to all of his faiths, particularly Hinduism, not only changed how he thought about his current situation, but also changed how he would think about every single situation after in Martel’s Life of Pi.
In our lives, each of us are faced with conflicts to overcome. While they may be difficult to face, hardships are an important part of life because overcoming them makes us stronger.
Adversity has a way of bringing up challenges unexpectedly, most people shrink away from it and get consumed, but when they push through it people come out stronger than they were before.
Yann Martel’s Life of Pi is a prime literary example of the major impacts the roles of minor characters have on the plot of a story. Without such characters as the protagonist’s father, uncle, and brother, the entirety of the main characters’ lives would be shifted dramatically. So much, in fact, that the events of the novel may never have occurred had these secondary characters been absent.

When someone experiences great adversity they can obtain from it one of two things, resilience or pessimism . These outcomes depend on a person’s attitude. If has an optimistic view throughout this time, they will learn that they are stronger and more capable of accomplishing tasks they never dared to face before. I strongly believe that during a time of misfortune a person can learn more about themselves and have a better grasp of what life is like.
This quote reveals the theme of identity and context where the Pi from before the journey contrasts the one on the journey. Because of the circumstances in which he must survive, Pi is forced to do such revolting actions such as cannibalism and drinking blood whereas before he was a strict vegetarian who would never dare to go near such barbarity. Despite his painful ordeals, Pi is still able to hold on to religion when he has lost almost everything else and this quote shows his gratitude and faithfulness to God as well as the sense of comfort he receives from His psychological presence. This descriptive setting of the beach is when he finally reaches land in Mexico after 227 days at sea.
The Life of Pi directed by Ang Lee is a dramatic survival film based around a young boy and his connection with reality and illusion. Life of Pi is not only a folio of visual effects but is a compelling film. Lee has made the inclusion of film aspects such as, morality, survival and perspective. These techniques are used to compel the audience and consequently force them to relate and watch with an open mind. This film provides the audience with two stories, allowing them to choose whether it is a compelling story or a movie full of visual effects.
Survival is an instinct. Often times, in order to survive, people must shed a part of their innocence. For some, it may be subtle, taken in tiny bites along the way, and for others it could be in one traumatizing moment. Ang Lee, director of “The Life of Pi,” explores this theme throughout his film. Lee shows the viewer this loss in the use of imagery, lighting, and color. He takes the viewer on a journey through the eyes of Piscine Patel as his innocence and humanity slowly get chipped away and he is forced to do what is necessary to survive and the lengths he goes to to regain that lost innocence.
Karanvir Dhami Ms. Yu ENG3U March 7, 2011 Symbolism in Life of Pi In Life of Pi there are many literary devices used to present the different themes in the novel. The main literary device used in Life of Pi is symbolism. Symbolism is often used to represent an object to something else, either by association or by resemblance. Most of the names of animals, objects and even humans in this novel have a symbolic meaning. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, symbolism such as pi’s name, the colour orange and the algae island, are used throughout the novel to provide Pi with protection to help him either survive or overcome his emotional pain. The mathematical pi is undefined, infinite and unable to be understood, just like Piscine Patel.
