Anyone who has been to SeaWorld has seen trained whales, dolphins, and seals. SeaWorld guests are entertained by the sea mammals in the tanks, jumping in the air on command by whistle. These tricks draw guests into the park. What may seem to be fun for the viewer, is torture for the mammals. There is a deadly truth behind all sea mammals in captivity: they don’t survive well there. Though sea mammals provide entertainment, they do not belong in captivity. Imagine being at home and then somebody broke in and you were forced, without any choice, to join the circus. This is what the mammals have to go through every day. It is not fair for the mammals to go through this. Why should anyone want them to? Now imagine being a six foot man living …show more content…
Other trainers tried everything to get Tili away from Dawn. They slapped the water to signal to Tili to come over to them. Tili ignored them and continued to drag Dawn. Dawn eventually got out of Tili’s grasp and when she thought she was safe, Tili swam up from under her and yanked her back down into the water by her arm. The paramedics got Dawn out of the water but some of her arm was left in Tili’s mouth. Dawn had no heartbeat. Tili had killed her. This wasn’t Tili’s first death. He had killed and injured previous trainers before Dawn. (Zimmerman, Tim) The documentary “Blackfish” is focused on Tili, and reveals that SeaWorld has abusive punishments for whales who do not behave. SeaWorld denied the documentary’s allegations, and was very upset when it aired. SeaWorld claimed that they never use punishment based training. (Brower, Kenneth) Whatever the case, for trainers like Dawn, no matter how hard one struggles to get away from such a deadly beast, they are not a match for the strength of a whale. Orcas were put on this earth to be killers of the sea, not performers or entertainers. Whales typically do not like loud noises. Performing many different times a day every day in captivity, loud noises alarm the animal and can lead to the whale not performing like he should. (Thorn, Adam) Whales are the largest of the dolphin family. They are also the top predators of the ocean. They are the smartest animals in world and
Since its establishment in 1964 the world famous franchise SeaWorld has been subjected to various tabloid headlines and legal investigations following the horrendous attacks by orcas, also known by their more apt name ‘Killer Whales’. These incident range from minor to major, but, there has been rare cases of fatalities from the family orientated marine parks based in America.
Since SeaWorld opened in 1964, the park has encountered harsh criticism from the public. Whether criticized for their ethics or their oblivious harm to animals, the underwater amusement park raises many ethical questions regarding the captivity of sea animals, especially orcas. Most people are uninformed about orcas to begin with, so they do not understand why SeaWorld is such a terrible place. SeaWorld exploits animals in their shows to bring revenue to their company, while disregarding the physical and mental health of the animals. Today, people have begun to see the reasons why SeaWorld should close. SeaWorld should close their doors due to their record of unhealthy orcas, their aggressive killer whale, Tilikum, and their dishonesty to the public.
When you are the one seeing the whale perform tricks its fun to watch but when the whale doesn't do the trick right it's punished. According to Blackfish when a whale did not perform a trick like the trainers wanted they would not be fed (Cowperthwaite). The opposition may also believe that keeping them in captivity also helps to learn about the whales but they are wrong because we've learned worse things about the whales than good. In the documentary Blackfish when a baby whale was taken from the mom the whale made sounds no one else heard before. These sounds were caused by SeaWorld taking away its child. Marine biologist have also found out that the bent dorsal Finn means its unhealthy (Cowperthwaite). Keeping whales in captivity has told us many things but none are
To begin with, if I was currently an advocate for the environment and animals I would first focus on the Orcas, or killer whales, at theme parks, specifically Sea World. First of all, Sea World is inhumane. Five of the Orcas currently at sea world were “whale-napped” from the oceans they called home. For example, Tilikum, one of the most know whales in the Sea World franchise, is now thirty-two years old. He was captured at the age of two by, which means he has been in captivity for thirty years. And, before anyone says Tilikum was injured so they “rescued” him I want to say that it is fact that Tilikum was not injured. He was taken from his family and confined to a tiny tank just so people could make a hefty profit. Also, if the Orcas are
SeaWorld has been a well loved and renowned place to the USA and the families in it for over 53 years. The world famous entertainment park is well known for its wide variety of oceanic animals, and of course, the part that brings them the most fame: their killer whale shows. Because killer whales are so hard to find in the ocean, and going out on a whale watching boat is usually quite expensive, many people have ended up opting for the choice of going to SeaWorld to see these animals. These shows are considered to be spectacular to some audiences, and an abusive nightmare to others. Despite the fact that many people love SeaWorld and consider it to be a fun and family-friendly place, the person with educated knowledge about what really goes on in this place could never see it the same way again, and should want something to be done about it. SeaWorld has caused controversial problems to animal lovers, the people who work there, and of course the killer whales themselves. SeaWorld should be talked about more in schools, educating more young people in hopes that one day there is enough people to take a stand and get this place to stop keeping killer whales captive.
Since 1961, 157 orcas, or killer whales, have been ripped from their homes and shoved into captivity. 127 of these orcas are now dead. With the number of captured orcas plus the number of those born into captivity, The W.D.C. (Whale and Dolphin Conservation) reports that, “At least 162 orcas have died in captivity, not including 30 miscarried or stillborn calves” ( “The Fate”1). Out of the 127 taken into captivity, 44 have died in SeaWorld. There are currently 58 orcas residing in 14 marine parks in eight different countries. 24 of those orcas are held in SeaWorld’s three parks in the United States. Since 2002, 14 have been taken out of the wild and put into these marine parks. (“The Fate”1) It is not fair for these innocent creatures to be physically and mentally manipulated and damaged. Such brutality would not be condoned if it were targeted towards a human, and it should not be condoned when targeted toward an animal. Orca whales should not be held in captivity because they are forced to live in subpar conditions, they are mistreated while in captivity, and they are led to aggressive behavior.
The documentary, Blackfish, proves that there was and still is quite a bit of controversy over whether it is ethical to keep Orcas in captivity. Some people believe that it is acceptable since the Orcas are being treated and fed well. Other people, however, believe that this is not ethical because being kept in a tank for twenty years leads to aggression and therefore is too dangerous for humans. The documentary proves that there are many incidents, in the past, where a whale has harmed their trainer. One example of this, that made people more aware of the danger, was the death of Dawn Brancheau in 2010 (Cowperthwaite & Oteyza, 2013). The incidence has led to many different debates over the years and Sea World has had to try to refute the claims that were made about them. The claims were regarding their treatment of the whales and other issues. However, Sea World was not
Tillikum grabbed her and dragged her into the water, and let her suffer to death, eventually she did. After seeing these incidents occur, from time to time, people have urged to ban SeaWorld from doing these activities. Keeping them activities will create more problems and will loose such person like Dawn, who loved and cared for the animal, but they cannot be trusted. That is why they are called Killer whales.
Most people today have visited or at least heard of the popular tourist attraction, Seaworld. These tourists may think of it as a place to see marine animals do trick, like killer whales interacting with humans in a fun and entertaining way- but do we ever stop to think about the treatment or feelings of these creatures? After visiting Seaworld and seeing the famous Shamu, the thought of how living in captivity affects the animal had not crossed my mind. After researching I am now extremely concerned with the way these whales are impacted by spending their lives in bathtubs and forced to do tricks for food, all while humans are blindly funding this billion dollar business.
Imagine living life in a space as confined as your bathtub; now imagine being a subject to public entertainment and being forced to perform to earn your food. This is what SeaWorld is doing to its orca whales. The captivity of orca whales at SeaWorld is something that the world will never agree on. Some people think that orca whales being held captive will not result in an unhealthy life, while others can certainly say differently. SeaWorld is more concerned about ticket sales and the money lining their pocket than they are about the treating these amazing creatures humanely. They find ways to justify their ill hearted decisions, choosing to look the other way as the orcas are clearly damaged from living in captivity.
Sea World is a prison for animals, the captivity is inhumane and completely against their well being. There have been multiple reports of the orcas becoming aggressive towards their handlers. In some cases, the trainers have been injured or even killed. Orcas are very large animals and should have a large habitat, which are not being provided. Tilikum, a 12,500-pound killer whale, is the largest orca held in captivity today. Since his capture in 1983, Tilikum has killed 3 trainers and has over 100 reports of aggressive behavior.
If you have ever been to Seaworld you would have had to go see the Killer whales in fact its one of the top attractions there. Through the eyes of a child, these gentle giants seem to be happy, healthy, and enjoying a playful game with their trainers. The question is are they really happy, do they get treated the right way, and why have there been deaths and injuries. Many people wonder about these things and after the movie Blackfish came out more and more people began to question how well Seaworld treats their animals. “The truth is that Sea World keeps its animals for entertainment and money and helps no one but themselves.”- Animal Legal Defense Fund
On February 24, 2010 couples and families were seated in the stadiums at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida for one of the most popular shows at the theme park “Believe”. Unfortunately, many families participating in that day’s event were eye-witnesses to an extremely traumatic tragedy at the SeaWorld theme park. It was reported by CNN news that the trainer Dawna Brancheau was grabbed by the mouth of
The blue whale is the loudest animal on Earth! Louder than a jet engine! Like it’s name implies, the blue whale is blue, white and sometimes gray! It is extremely heavy, weighing in at 200 tons! The tongue alone weighs as much as an elephant! The blue whale ranges from 80 to 100 feet long. It’s heart is the size of a Volkswagen Beetle! Some adaptations the blue whale has is a mating call to attract other whales and blowholes
“Splish! Splash!” The sound of bottlenose dolphins jumping and swimming around their tank excites a family at SeaWorld as they wait to experience their first encounter with the dolphins. Every year, bottlenose dolphins bring joy to hundreds of people in both captivity and the wild, but what do people truly know about them? Bottlenose dolphins are actually unique and interesting creatures.
