Life Changing Events In the two short stories, “Sonny’s Blues” and “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” it demonstrates how one person’s choice can reflect another’s. It shows how certain events or experiences can change one’s life forever. When someone is being played into a devastating scenario, their choices will define whether or not a person is good or bad. Although good or bad cannot really be defined, in the end it all comes down to their morals. These two stories also show how one act of kindness can sometimes go a long way. In “Sonny’s Blues”, Sonny was thought to have been a great citizen, man, and an even better brother. It all changed when his image was tarnished. 14). Every time they got into an argument he was constantly reminded of this. No matter what the situation may be he knew deep down he had to take care of Sonny. So, the death of the narrator’s daughter changed him for the better because he was able to build his relationship back up with his brother again. It made him look past all the mistakes Sonny has made. It made the narrator a better person.
In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, the grandmother is known to be a judgmental lady from the very beginning and she is not afraid to voice her opinion regardless of who the person is. For example, in the beginning of the story she is complaining about the trip the family is making to Florida for the reason being, she rather travel to Tennessee. She later finds out that the Misfit is making his way towards Florida and she attempts to convince her son to change his mind by telling him, “I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that a loose in it. I couldn’t answer to my conscience if I did.” (O’Connor pg. 378). She always has to give her opinion on issues she doesn’t abide with.
