Kelsie Fast Liberation of the Peon, by Diego Rivera was done with fresco in 1931. Fresco is a watercolor painting performed rapidly on a wet plaster. As the painting dries the paint soaks into the plaster and becomes fixed. The paint takes place during the Mexican Revolution, and shows a body on the ground that has been severely beaten. There are four men that have surrounded the person, and are tending to the person’s care and needs. Looking at this artwork brings a great cast of sorrow to me. The scene of the painting seems dangerous and hostile there is positivity because a group of people is helping one single person. The lines appear soft but they are rougher in other places throughout the picture. Curvy lines are used pummeling smoke that is coming from a fire that is occurring in the village. These lines show you direction, they change from red to black as they rise into the air, to show that the fire is spreading uncontrollably. Lines are used to outline objects and set boundaries. For example, the sheet that the men are using to cover the brutally beaten body on the ground. Another example is the hills that surround the burning village, these lines show you how vast and open the surrounding desert is. If you look closely at the painting you can see a bunch of littler lines that are all over the place, making you think that the Diego Rivera used a super-fine bristled paint brush.
