“The Sniper” is a short story written by Liam O’Flaherty which shows the reader the psyche of a skilled sniper amidst the chaos of war in Dublin. The Sniper is an extremely complex, and multi-dimensional character, which is why it is difficult to decipher his personality, and how he distinguishes certain situations in such tense times. Throughout the small amount of text, the Sniper portrays several different character traits, both positive and negative. Mentally, he is very professional, but is also often very reckless with his work, not fully considering the potential consequences of his actions. Morally, the Sniper often shows remorse and empathy towards the opposing side of war, but carries significant survivor’s guilt later on. The Sniper is depicted as an extremely tough character, both emotionally and physically. The Sniper also …show more content…
He prioritises his work while being unfazed by the consequences of his actions. He is well prepared for the scenarios he places himself into. He lays on “a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge” equipped with “his rifle” his “field glasses” and “his revolver” (O’Flaherty 1). The Sniper demonstrates exceptionally quick thinking, always putting a plan together in the moment, “He must kill that enemy and he cannot use his rifle. He only had a revolver to do it. Then he thought of a plan” (O’Flaherty 3). Despite this professionalism, the Sniper shows significant recklessness throughout some parts of the short story: “He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk smoking. It was a lot of fun. [...] He decided to take the risk” (O’Flaherty 1). This decision he makes affects the situation he is in, after “placing [the] cigarette between his lips” he “[inhales] the smoke [...]. Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet of the roof” (O’Flaherty 1). On several other occasions throughout the story, the Sniper presents this same clumsiness and
The sniper decides to light the cigarette. “Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet of the roof.” This means that there is danger everywhere, vigilant and waiting for the sniper to make the wrong move, a move that might cost him his life. The informant relays the sniper’s position to the soldiers in the armored vehicle. After shooting both the informer and the soldier on the street, a shot consequently rings out. “ ‘I’m hit,’ he muttered” No matter how well of a marksman he is, he can still be wounded in battle and he has. “The woman’s corpse lay still in the gutter.” The informant would be on the side of the Free Staters as the sniper is a republican; however, since she had acted upon her beliefs, she had been assassinated attempting to flee. No matter who believes their cause is the ‘right one’, there will be casualties and injuries during the conflict on both
The story sniper is a story about a man that's in the army which his perfection is with a sniper rifle the story's theme is based on dublin and the sniper which will be called sniper is on the tower looking down on an empty road with hail of gunshots in the distance but he decides to eat a sandwich and light a cigaret but he doesn't want to take the risk of the spark to light the cigarette to give out his position and because the sniper was tired and needed the break he took the risk and lit his cigarette and soon as he blew out the light a gunshot and a crack flew by him
There are many ways of thinking of military snipers. They can be compared to predators in the wild, a skillful killing machine that kills out of necessity and has the respect of their companions. Snipers can also be thought of as prey. They are given a challenging task that requires skill to elude the enemy and often preys upon their mental toughness. In Boyden’s book Three Day Road the author uses many passages to compare the role of a sniper to the role of both predator and prey in the wilderness. These comparisons help the reader relate to the experiences of two indigenous boyhood friends, Elijah and Xavier as snipers in World War 1. Instead of shooting caribou back home in Canada as boys, they are now shooting German soldiers in the trenches
O’Flaherty believes that war can physically threat people who participate in it. The sniper must act quickly and escape since his body is in physical threat.“Morning must not
The book portrays a sniper’s life as a mixture of terror and mind numbing boredom. Chris Kyle has the most confirmed kills of any U.S. military sniper (more than 150), two silver stars, and at least one confirmed bounty on his head. The book never glorifies what Chris Kyle did for a living, neither is it an explanation. The book instead gives readers a sense of what it is like to be a sniper, which lets us speculate as to whether we would have what it takes to become one.
The story the sniper is a suspenseful short story written by Liam O'Flaherty. The story is about a republican sniper that has the face of a scholar that is involved in the Irish civil war. Liam O'Flaherty's nonfiction story, “Sniper,” takes place in Dublin, Ireland in 1922. The sniper in is positioned on a roof of a building looking for enemies to shoot down. When he did his job he was ashamed of what he had done. Liam O’Flaherty uses the theme treat every person with dignity, and the craft moves that he used imagery and short choppy sentences to make the story better and more suspenseful. In the story Sniper there are many themes, but the one theme that stands out the most was treat every person with dignity.
War is truly violent and awful job, especially for a sniper. Shooter is about a Marine scout sniper named Jack Coughlin that plays a small role in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. His new style of urban sniping makes it much easier for his fellow Marines. He takes out threats before they can even come close to his men. He is at the front of the action as the ¾ battalion moves from town to town on a campaign to Baghdad. In this journal, I will visualize a sandstorm, clarifying Jack meeting the person he shot, that lived, and connecting Jack meeting his enemy and a football game.
His enemy had been hit” (O’Flaherty 4). This shows that the Sniper is a good shooter. 50 yards is quite a ways away, and he was injured with only a revolver left, a gun that is not meant for long ranges, and it is in the middle of the night, so he cannot see the enemy very well either. The Sniper is still able to hit his target well, and this is impressive and shows that the sniper is dangerous because of his abilities. The Sniper is able to come up with a plan that is risky, and then he is also able to execute the plan as well. The plan would go to waste if he was not able to hit the enemy, but he does hit him and that makes the Sniper very dangerous, he is able to come up with magnificent plans and is able to execute them to.
The sniper becomes paranoid, and very excited to kill during the job. The sniper had "the face of a student...but his eyes had a cold gleam of a fanatic”, this description gives the sniper youth but still shows a lust for killing. As mentioned in the story “He was eating a sandwich hungrily. He had eaten nothing since morning. He had been too excited to eat.” To most people the simple act of eating would be to difficult when dealing with the thought of war.
The sniper has a decision to make, whether or not he was going to take a smoke break, he decides to take one, and his consequence is that the smoke from the cigarette attracts a enemy sniper. As a reader, we recognize that his mistake, and it best illustrates how the sniper made his decision, and his consequence was a near death
The war begins to transform The Sniper to a fanatic of warfare. The Sniper sees who
The description of the sniper is more about what he does for the greater good. This non effective characterization causes a moral delay in the story, do we side with the sniper, or with the other shooter. The lack of information on either character causes us to have a moral debate on who is the better man. The absence of characterization also makes it difficult for us to understand the story as well. In the story it is shown, that an old woman points to the sniper and tells another man about him, she is characterized as an informer.
The sniper had laid hidden on a rooftop near O’Connel Bridge keeping watch and being ready to kill any enemy. The Sniper see’s an enemy armored car pull up 50 yards ahead of him, but doesn’t bother shooting at it knowing his bullets will not pierce
