My name is Adylene and I’m writing you this letter because I want to let you know how I feel about your budget cuts. Many of the people in your generation may agree to it but I do not. Helping the community is important to me and with the budget cuts it will affect it negatively. Many people live off of government assistance and with budget cuts, I doubt they will be able to survive. We need crucial foreign aid and development programs, they helped us throughout these years. Unfortunately, these budget cuts will also increase poverty! My favorite program called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, has helped my family so much and even that is being taken away. I’ve read that, “Every $1 billion spent
I am writing to follow up on your response, on January 14th to my application on January 12th, stating that I am not eligible for the low income program. It is difficult to understand how Social Security Disability (SSD) does not fall within the required programs for low income requirement. SSD is my only source of income since 2013 and as of this date I receive $1,260 before deductions. How much less income do I need to have? As you can see from the attached files my heating and electric bills are over burdening my other necessities such as rent and food. I also have care for my son, three years of age, who also requires a warm home to live in and unfortunately keeping my apartment at a comfortable temperature is difficult.
The current Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program lacks efficient criteria and proper monitoring of the program, which has led to individuals taking advantage of the system. The current program as it stands needs to be reformed. Individuals are gaining eligibility into the program that are not using the program as intended, but are using it as a crutch. Recipients have been able to purchase items, using the program, which are not essential for survival and can be viewed as a luxury. Also, recipients of food stamps have been able to create an illegal trade where the individuals have been able to use food stamps as a cash currency. Your department needs to address the importance of having stricter criteria, for
To whom it may concern I writing this letter to appeal my finical aid. My finical aid was suspend I am told do to the fact that I have not receive my diploma in culinary art because of a class I needed. The one that motivated me to write essays and apply to colleges while telling me to become more active during high school was the most stressing person I’ve met. For every individual there has been at least one person that helped them become motivated to got to college and become more active. Some common motivators are family, friends , celebrities, teachers and even historical figures. But for me, the one that motivated me was none other than my nagging high school counselor/advisor, Marienel Lopez. It is because of her nosyness that and non-stop nagging that I joined the Upward Bound summer program, applied for scholarships and colleges, and even participated for JROTC. If it weren’t for her meddlesome behavior to help me become successful, I am completely sure I would not have been able to attend Penn State and be part of Upward Bound Migrant program. The first time I met Marienel I thought she would be calm and chill, but boy was I wrong.
As I drive by 2520 Irving Blvd Street, I distinctly recall what it felt like to walk out of the Department of Workforce Services building after I figured out that my family qualified for food stamps. There wasn’t a rainbow that day, after sharp flowing sprinkles fell from the sky. The parking lot was vacant for the most part. As our family walked to our old, beat up car my mother had shed a tear of relief. For some people that don’t know what food stamps (S.N.A.P.) are, it is benefits from the government usually based on total gross income. The total amount of money the state will provide depends on several criteria. Before you judge, which I odds are you’ve already done, given that I just told you that my family was impermanently on public assistance. First off, my mom tried to do everything right. She stayed up late on Wednesday nights clipping coupons. She baked her own bread. She steered away from credit card debt. She drove a 10-year-old car. She even tried to get her GED except her French is stronger than her English and she couldn’t comprehend much. Amongst the United States is handling an ongoing issue about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (S.N.A.P.), which is nearly dropping 47 million Americans whom don’t qualify for food stamps. Overall would increasing hardship and food insecurities for families that severely need it. While some people milk the system and don’t benefit our country trying to abuse it we will talk about how great the amount of cuts
With $30 you can buy the following: 2 pies of Frozen Freschetta 12” Pizza, 1 box of Kellogg’s cereal of your choice, 3 boxes of Barilla Pasta, 2 jars of Barilla Pasta Sauce, 1 pound of turkey breast cold cuts, 1 package of salad blend, 1 and a ½ crown of broccoli, 5 tomatoes on the vine and 8 slices of store-made angel food cake (“ShopRite of Poughkeepsie Weekly Ad Week of April 20 through April 26”). Can you survive on that for a week? The average single able bodied, unemployed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipient in New York receives around $30 a week to purchase food (“Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program”). The food stamp program was made national by the Food Stamp Act of 1964 by President Lyndon. B. Johnson (“Food Stamps in the U.S”). Today, over 47.6 million Americans rely on the government to buy groceries (“Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program”). The food stamp program is a staple part of our society. However, there was a time when the program was so unpopular that it shut down for almost two decades. In the recent years, food stamp benefits have been on a trend of expanding not only the amount of recipients, but also the amount each recipient receives in benefits. Why has the food stamp program become so popular and supported over the years? And what is the fate of SNAP? The analysis of trends of the policy changes and public moods shows that the size of the food stamp program has changed with the shift in America’s attitude towards
The non-profit organization that I chose for the semester project is Feeding America, a non-profit organization that consists of a network of food banks assisting food insecure people throughout the nation. What does a food insecure family look like in the United States? It is parents going without food in order to feed their children, it is families rationing food and skipping meals.
Program was created in 1964 by President Johnson. In order to get rid of the stigma that the
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (S.N.A.P.) is a federal program founded in 1964, with the purpose of reducing hunger and malnutrition in the United States. Low-income families and individuals that qualify for this federal assistance can buy food every month in the form of an electronic benefit transfer (EBT). These EBT cards are similar to debit card; cardholder’s recipient can use their cash benefits or buy eligible food at most stores and retailers. Over the years S.N.A.P expenses have dramatically increase. S.N.A.P needs reform due to the never-ending of the amount of waste, fraud, and abuse.
The social welfare policy known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps was implemented in 1964 and renamed in 2008. The goal is to provide monthly benefits to low-income households to help pay for the cost of food. This is a federally funded program that combats food insecurities. The process to receive SNAP benefits is pretty much the same across the board. One must complete an application, a face-to-face interview and then a telephone interview. After those steps, the amount of monthly benefits will be determined based on income and how many are in the household. Some issues that have risen from this program include selling of the EBT card for cash
The Food Stamp Program, recently renamed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, has been helping serve the citizens of America since 1939. This program focuses on providing food at a discounted price to those who qualify. The past has helped shaped and grow this government program, however, it has also had to adjust and change due to new demands and the changing demographics of the population. SNAP has allowed Americans to provide themselves and their families with nutritious meals at a discounted price. However, if the newly proposed restrictions are implemented there would be fewer options available and limit the recipient’s purchasing power.
In the United State, there is a federal nutrition program for low income people to help food budget and buy healthy food. People who have low income in the United States get the food stamps, also known as “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)”. For every month, eligible people who have low income get benefits deposited in to their EBT account. Once they get food stamp, people can purchase food items including seeds and plants to grow food in their house or backyard. It can be used at a grocery store, a supermarket, a farmer 's market, and a shelter that serves meals. However, with all these great benefits, people still eat unhealthy because of too much time consuming, limited money, some food dessert area, and the benefits allow people to eat junk food.
Food insecurity is a term that was introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA labels the insecurity based on the severity with four different groups. One group is the Low Food Security; which means low quality, desirability or variety but no or little reduction of food. Very Low Food Security is reduced food intake and multiple disruptions of eating patterns. The opposite spectrum is High Food Security. This is no food limitations or no issues accessing food. Marginal food security is sufficient supply of food with some concern of ability to supply. (USDA, https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/food-nutrition-assistance/food-security-in-the-us/definitions-of-food-security.aspx).
As of 2013, one sixth of the entire country was enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Through this program, 47 million Americans are given federal financial aid to purchase fresh groceries (Plumer). One of the highly debated provisions of the SNAP program is what participants should be allowed to use their food stamps for. As of right now, food stamps can only be used to purchase food that can be cooked or eaten at home, preventing families from spending the federal aid at restaurants (USDA). Recently, the fast food corporation YUM!, which owns Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut, has lobbied to change this restriction (USA Today). Should people benefitting from the SNAP program have the right to spend their money on
Hunger is a big social issue facing America today. According to (“Do Something.com”) 1 out of 6 people face hunger in the US. Also 49 Million Americans Struggle to put food on the table. America is the best country in world, we shouldn’t have so many people hungry. Many people have thought of fixing this problem but one company has found a way to help fix this problem, this company is Feeding America. They have been giving people food since 1979. They’ve helped out 46 million Americans. ( feedingamerica.org )
