Dear Last Minute Customer of Home Depot,
You are like me. Scrambling around the aisles of the local home improvement store attempting to grab all of the items needed to complete a project or projects on this quiet, cool September night. It is 9:45 pm, 15 minutes until the store closes, and the pressure is on to locate everything on the list. I think that you and I are the only two customers in the store surrounded by the sea of orange aprons restocking the shelves. I see the large metal cross you wear around your neck, therefore this story may me familiar to you. It is the story commonly referred to as "Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand" found in Matthew 14: 13-21. I bet that you relate to the text somehow. Maybe you are like Jesus, in need of a solitary retreat, needing time to be by yourself. Perhaps you just received overwhelming news and chose to find a familiar place to wonder within. Or maybe you are a part of the large crowd gathered to bear witness to the tremendous acts of Jesus, journeying a fair distance to your arrival. Maybe you view Home Depot as a healing place. I know that I find all of the creative ideas and potential projects to be therapeutic. The good news is that Jesus meets us where we are at and heals us. We are like the large crowd that followed Jesus' instructions and have witnessed great acts of hospitality and overwhelming grace. When we are filled with the love of God, it overflows into the people around us and together we can all be valued, cared for, and empowered. We can find our spirituality in the mundane and methodically tasks that we perform. My hope for you is that you recognize that God is working in your life so that you may be able to use the gifts you have been given in order to inspire and guide others.
