John Steinbeck wrote the play Of Mice and Men in 1937 (Steinbeck). It is a play about two ranch workers who do not have the best of luck. The two workers were named George and Lennie. George was a more small bodied man. His partner Lennie was a giant among average sized people. They are on the road going place to place working numerous jobs. Lennie has a learning disability. The two work hand and hand. George is there to keep Lennie out of trouble. Lennie in a way helps keep George together. Sometimes it gets difficult for the two but they always get through everything together. They both work hand and hand. George is the brains and Lennie is the muscle. Lennie is a very powerful man so he can do a lot of things normal men cannot do. …show more content…
Many think that this decision was more to please his parents instead of just him wanting to go there. By Steinbeck wanting to become a writer he thought that there was little use for college. After college he tried being a freelance writer. He moved to New York City where he worked as a construction worker and a newspaper reporter (“World”). Lennie is a very misunderstood individual. He has some sort of mental issue that makes his life different than normal. Lennie has a thing for soft fluffy things, he likes to hold them and pet them. Most of the time these soft things end up dead which Lennie tries his hardest to keep from George when this happens. George once found a dead mouse in Lennie’s pocket that he had been keeping there for 3 whole days after it died (Lisca). Lennie is a giant of a man. He does not understand how much power he has. This causes a lot of the mistakes he makes. George is there most of the time to correct or stop Lennie from doing these things. There are sometimes when George is not there to stop him and Lennie gets them both into trouble. The two have had to move several times because of Lennie (McMurray). In fact every time they have had to leave a place was because of Lennie’s actions. There was one thing Lennie got them in and they could not run from it. Lennie was in the barn and Curley’s wife came in. He wanted to touch her hair and he ended up rubbing it too hard. She yelled for help and he wanted her to shut up so he
How far would you go to save your friend from themselves. In the novella of mine and men by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie are working to get a nice house and live off the land. To guys George and Lennie work a farm to get the money to buy a house, but Lennie gets into trouble when he accidentally kills curley's wife. Which forced Lennie to kill George. Some of the relationships in the novella are George and Lennie, candy and George, and candy and his dog.
In this chapter of the novel, Steinbeck uses a lot of visual elements, strong dialect,
In the book Of Mice And Men we are brandished the similar relationships of George and Lennie and Candy and his dog. Candy shows that his dog meant the world to him by resisting the quick and painless gun shot to his dogs head. Candy says "Well hell. I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. Herded sheep with him" (44). Just like Candy’s relationship George had a similar relationship with his friend Lennie. Lennie made a mistake in his life by killing someone and had to be shot just like Candy’s dog quick and painless. George explains how he takes care of Lennie because that’s exactly what he promised Lennie’s Aunt Clara. We see foreshadowing in these tragic events when we are told that Lennie was just getting worse and worse in his sickness
“...in 1913, the passing of the Mental Incapacity Act in Britain led to around 40,000 men and women being locked away…” (NewStatesMan) That was a ton of mental people being locked up because they weren’t “useful” or “any good”. Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck describes how two men, George and Lennie, have a dream to one day own a farm and have the American Dream. Lennie isn’t exactly like the other guys at the ranch. He faces many difficulties unlike the others.
Have you ever had a friend that was very different from you? That was the case in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie were completely different but were best friends. They were migrant workers that never stayed in the same area to long because they would always get in trouble. George and Lennie have a lot of differences but at the same time had similarities which was a big help in their friendship.
George and Lennie’s relationship is different to the other transient workers, in the way of their history together. George and Lennie grew up together and he always looked out for Lennie, which is why he promised Lennie’s Aunt Clara before she died, that he would look after him, as Lennie was child-like and therefore incapable towards taking care of himself; “You’re Aunt Clara wouldn’t like you running off by yourself, even if she is dead”. It suggests that there is a bond because of Aunt Clara and how George is the only other person who really knew how to treat and handle Lennie. This is why during the great depression they went to California to work at a ranch. This is where George really took the lead role as a father figure and had the
Lennie can’t control his own strength and he is not very smart and don’t know what he does. In the beginning, Lennie liked to pet mice and not realizing it killing them. It leads up to grabbing a girl's skirt, in the town of weed making them run out and hide in a ditch. Toward the chapter one ending George was concerned with Lennie making another mistake, making them move again. George told him if any trouble was to happen he was to leave and hide in the brush and wait for him to arrive. Lennie received a newborn pup but one day when he was playing unrealizing it crushing the puppy. The worst thing any person could have done is murder. He snatched her hair, grabbing her and then final the snapping of the Curley's wife's
Lennie tends to grab things and hold on to it and not let it go. He gets nervous and doesn’t think. He doesn’t know his own strength. The reason why I say this is because in the beginning George was talking about how Lennie killed a mouse just by petting it. He gets too carried away and pet’s too hard he ends up hurting them without meaning to. Again with the puppy he does the same thing. Lennie really lives the puppy and wants to protect it. But in the end he feels guilty for what he has done. Then again happened the same thing to Curley’s wife. She lets Lennie touch her hair to show Lennie how soft it is. She told Lennie to stop because it was messing up her hair. Then she jerked away and again her grabbed on her tight like a mouse and eventually kills
George and Lennie traveled because in the story they made it sound like they hated their job so they took other chances in the world and because of this they became close and respect each other for who they are. I know they don't like there job because on paragraph 3 George says "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world... they got no family they don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an work up a stake and they they go into town and blow their stake and the first thing you know they're pounding their tail on some other ranch. They ain't got nothing to look ahead to." Later on the story they also talk about how with out each other they wouldn't be surviving because like I said before one of them is street smart and because of that he has skill and the other one is more intelligent so he has some skills up his sleve. They also have some big goals for each other they plan to have a house with a big field and lots of animals running around and this is what keeps them so close there understanding of one another that why there relationship is so important and thats why they need each other.
The book “Of Mice and Men” is a good book. The setting of the novel is california, in the 1930’2. That's when the great depression was going on. John steinbeck tells a story about two friends that has a dream of running a ranch together. George and Lennie is the friends names. Lennie is big and strong but is kinda slow. Lennie is smart, but too smart for his own good. Whatever george tells Lennie to do Lennie does it with no problem. The type of friendship George and Lennie has is a utility friendship, according to aristotle.
Human beings are social creatures who needs relationships for living well. There is compelling evidence, that healthy relationships contributes to less stress, longer, happier and richer lives. A survey of 5000 people found that doubling friendship, have the same effect as 50% increase in income. Some even believe friends as assets, while others view relationships as free therapist. In the novel, “ Of Mice And Men”, the friendship between George and Lennie can be described night and day.
Because of the lack of mental stability, Lennie is very reliant on his newfound best friend/companion to protect and look after him. George may get frustrated with Lennie, but his
“A wise man’s goal shouldn’t be to say something profound but to say something useful” (Criss Jami). The title of the novella is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The novella is about two men who have been friends since their childhood, George being the brighter one and Lennie’s personality is more like a child’s. George and Lennie make their way to a ranch after running away from their previous one because Lennie had done something wrong. George tells Lennie not to mess around here, but an incident still occurs which puts Lennie in trouble once again. Slims overall personality type is that he is wise because he is portrayed to be considerate, reserved, and insightful, these traits affect the other characters because they all look up to Slim
Despite committing several destructive and irrational deeds, Lennie can be exempt from blame because of his mental impairments. When Lennie breaks Curley’s hand it is only because George convinced him to defend himself against Curley’s attack. Even after the attack Lennie cries,”I didn’t wanta hurt him”(Steinbeck, 64) This shows that Lennie’s intentions are always meant to be good and that he would never willfully hurt someone without proper justification. Lennie other eccentric acts such as incidentally killing mice and a puppy can be credited to the lack of voice of reason in Lennie, which is what George attempts to serve as. However, when Lennie is without the presence of George he struggles to make the correct decisions because he doesn’t know any better.
Lennie is mentally disabled and so always ‘does bad things’, because of this, he constantly depends on George to protect him and get him out of trouble. For example, in Weed, Lennie constantly ‘wants to touch
