The intake of marijuana can also be harmful for the people around the users. Not only in the act of second hand smoking, but also in the acts that the marijuana conveys you to do. As mentioned earlier, marijuana has a greater concentration of carcinogens and irritants that can cause damage to the participant’s trachea and lungs. It is also possible to have enough marijuana in your system to fail a drug test from second hand smoking. Consequently, this can cause real danger to the roommates, suitemates and anyone else around the participants while they are smoking. They can also be affected by the mental side effects mentioned earlier. Another key point in the argument against external conflicts is the enhancement of sexual behavior. In “Get …show more content…
She states that as a result of high pricing, the consumption of marijuana will be lowered. I also agree with Pacula but I would have to make the same comment I did to the article from Subritzky. I believe this method will be used for less frequent users who are not dependent on the drug, and know the consequence that can come from buying from an illicit supplier. Both of these authors make great points but I believe they need to come together and show both spectrums of the users from hardcore, frequent and …show more content…
Many parents want a return in their investment of sending their son or daughter to an institution of higher learning. This can now be connected to the student’s grades. With the student’s new mental incapability’s, the parents will start to notice a slippery slope. They will first notice a drop in test grade and closely thereafter, a hindrance in their GPA. The next faze they will see will come from the stress and anxiety. If their son or daughter continues to partake in marijuana they will see the amount of stress and anxiety rise. In the worst case their son or daughter might become a harm to themselves. The next worry of a college students’ parents is their sons’ or daughters’ safety. College students are met with many dangers on a regular basis. Many College students have been taught how to avoid these dangers and if they can avoid them, how to handle themselves. Under the influence of marijuana these teaching can be thrown out the window. The biggest worry for a parent should be for their daughter. As we learned earlier, females are much more susceptive to the side effects than males, especially in the category of sexual behaviors. No parent will want to know that their child is being taken advantage of, hurt or in the worst case scenario, killed. Henceforth, this is why parents should sit down and talk to their child about the side
She can “...[decrease students’] ability to sustain their self-confidence and remain focused on achieving academic [goals]...” (“Will My Teen’s Marijuana”). For example, “Mary Jane” has been shown to give users mental health issues. “Panic attacks, depression, anxiety, and other mental health symptoms…” are common among marijuana users (“Will My Teen’s Marijuana”). Having a mental health issue brings on an abundance of possible problems that can affect a student’s academic performance. Depending on which mental health disorder a student has, it can be difficult for her to focus on studying, taking tests, interacting with others, etc. (“Will My Teen’s Marijuana”). Furthermore, the use of “Mary Jane” has also been proven to cause users to feel a lack of motivation (Theis). This can negatively impact students’ academic performance because they won’t have anything pushing or motivating them to do their schoolwork and/or study. If the students don’t do their schoolwork or study; obviously, their academic performance will decline (Theis). As Arria can tell, “Mary Jane” definitely has a negative impact on students’ psychological skills/abilities. In fact, during a 10-year study that followed 1,200 college freshmen, it was found that marijuana use led to ‘“...college students skipping more classes, spending less time studying, [and] earning lower grades...”’
David Casarett a Physician in California explains how he learned about Medical Marijuana and how he has come to recommend other physicians to research and consider medical marijuana. Casarett asks, “What if mainstream health care operated more like a medical marijuana dispensary?”
The legalization of recreational marijuana is an important debate, one that could really cause drastic changes in societies. Marijuana has entered a dark stage in the pathway of legalization, and it is correlating with the prohibition stage that alcohol rested in. The debate can often reach a nasty level between individuals taking sides with the topic. Legalization of marijuana can be very beneficial under regulated circumstances, therefore making all of the negative views less important.
Researchers have come to believe that marijuana can harm the students brain functions such as attention span, motivation, memory, and learning ability (NIDA Blog Team). “[They also believe that] students who use marijuana regularly tend to get lower grades and are more likely to drop out of high school than those who don’t use [cannabis]” (NIDA Blog team). While others researchers, Sisley and Borchardt, believe that “Mary Jane” does not affect a students’ IQ; further research has proven that early use of the gateway drug can lower someone’s IQ by 8 points (Schick). “The study found that ‘even after controlling for the effects of demographics, high school GPA, and personality variables’ heavy users [,] those who smoked more than 15 times a month [,] were "twice as likely" to experience discontinuous enrollment than minimal users” (Shick). Even people who infrequently visited “Mary Jane” were 66% more likely to drop out of school than minimal users and people who did not use the drug at all (Schick). The students who are letting her control their lifestyle, they are making their own decisions that are most likely not the best choice for them to make. But, the students are continuing to visit “Mary Jane”, they’re letting her control their lives and their academic performance.
Out of all 50 states, 23 of them have legalized the use of medical marijuana, including our capital, Washington D.C..With that being said, I believe that marijuana, medical and recreational, should be decriminalized nationwide. The United States is in tremendous debt as a result of our own mistakes, and offering our help to other countries. If marijuana were legal in all 50 states, and were taxed to the benefit of surpassing our debt, we would become increasingly financially stable.
It is true that medical marijuana can begin the process to slow down a disease. The deterioration of the human brain from Alzheimer's, for instance, medical marijuana can slow down the progression of the human brain from deteriorating. Marijuana is a very popular drug that many people have used. Over 98 million people over the age of 12 in the United States have smoked marijuana. It is known under many different names such as: weed, bud, ganja, hashish, doobie, reefer, mary-jane and grass. It plays quite a substantial role in modern day pop culture and almost everyone over the age of 16 knows what it is. Despite all this, marijuana is illegal and in most states a person can be sent to jail for the possession of less than a gram of this substance. Even if the person is doing nothing wrong and is subjected to a random search, if that person has marijuana on them, they will be charged with a criminal offense and sent to jail. Marijuana should be legalized because it can
Marijuana or Cannabis is a hallucinogenic drug that contains a very high amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It can be used for both medical and recreational reasons, but it is currently illegal in most states in this country. This drug has been illegal for the majority of this country's history, and just recently several states like Washington, California, and New York have passed laws so that people with medical issues are able to consume this drug for their own medical needs
A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly fifteen hundred pounds of marijuana within about 15 minutes to induce a lethal response... In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many of the foods we commonly consume. For example, eating ten raw potatoes can result in a toxic response. By comparison, it is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death." DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young. Between 9 and 17 million Americans are occasional users of marijuana and about 3 million are daily users. As many as 40 million have tried the drug for many different reasons such as experimentation and peer pressure (Schleichert 40). Much of America's youth is experimenting with the drug and
Recreational marijuana will affect society’s future by affecting the development of the brain, starting addictions, and affecting a user’s life.
Most college students cease to believe that smoking marijuana is just as harmful as tobacco or other illicit drugs. In actuality, marijuana has a high level of carcinogens, as well as carbon monoxide, which makes the heart work harder to deliver oxygen to deprived tissues. The same health issues that arise from smoking tobacco such as, emphysema, bronchitis, and other respiratory problems can also be brought on by smoking marijuana.
More than half the states in the union have passed some form of legislation decriminalizing marijuana for either medical or recreational use despite Schedule I classification (a substance with no medical values and high potential for abuse) by the federal government. Cannabis prohibition has remained a controversial topic for the better part of the last century, and popular opinion has begun to shift. Although banned in most countries, cannabis has long been used in a variety of industrial, medicinal, and recreational purposes throughout history.
Certain enhancements are frowned upon by many in today’s society. With many available, whether legal or not, there are some enhancements that contribute to the greater good of people. Only thing is that they are not approved for its benefits. I believe cannabis plays a huge roll, being an example of an enhancement that should be seen negatively by any means. Quality of lives are changed and ameliorated so why should anyone condemn the benefits of marijuana?
Currently the use of marijuana, or cannabis, is illegal in the United States under federal law. According to Jeff Darnell, the Stanislaus County deputy district attorney, even the use of medical marijuana is illegal. This is due to the Controlled Substance Act. The Controlled Substance Act regulates the use and distribution of certain substances. Many states have started to ignore this law and legalize the medical use of marijuana. Some have even legalized recreational use. These events raise the question, who should decide on the legality of use of marijuana? Should the federal government, state, or local government hold the power to decide? The states should have the power to
Marijuana is a green or brown mix of preserved, crushed leaves from the marijuana plant. A psychoactive drug, marijuana contains fifty-percent more tar than tobacco. Smoking the harmful plant can damage the brain, lungs, and the male reproductive system and may escalate the effects of epilepsy and psychosis (Kahler, 1988). Within campus colleges and universities, there are a lot of students who are using marijuana recreationally. Long-term marijuana use can induce negative effects on short-term memory, concentration, attention span, motivation, and problem solving, which clearly interfere with learning. Tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana, can reinforce dependence on the drug and on other addictive drugs (Joffe &
