• The students chooses to learn
• Information is not knowledge but we have the power to turn information into knowledge
• Take care of yourself and keep your priorities straight
The purpose of this assignment is to help the student grasp the importance of putting effort into their studies. We have the power to either excel in our studies, relationships, and opportunities. In saying that, we can just as easily get side tracked and lose focus of the task at hand. This article is meant to give us advice and show us the path to a successful future; however, the choice lies in our hands.

One of the most important things I’ve learned through reading the article, Learning- Your First Job, is the idea that we as humans have to verbalize our thoughts in order for them to access our memory. This feels true, especially as I look back on my high school career and realized how many notes I looked at but never remembered. Another thing I experienced last year in high school was “Senioritis.” Homework became a chore when it should have been looked at as an opportunity. I realized that assignments are clues from the teacher over what things I

The first step to following this advice is to ask questions or do research on my own. I need to understand the material. After I understand the scenario I need to apply my knowledge. I will make flash cards for new words, add to/ reread the notes that Dr. Boury puts on Black board, and hopefully help mentor another individual in order to keep the information running through my head. In saying that, hopefully I will live by this quote form the article, “It’s your priorities and not the clock that will determine the outcome of your college experience.” I choose how successful I will be in Biology 211, college, and my career. It will just take
In December 2011 Suleyman Avci conducted a study on 508 first grade students to learn the relationship between self-regulation and the delay of gratification in doing well in academics. Most people are aware the more time they put into something the better the results will turn out and the bigger the reward will be. This theory applies to almost anything including academics. The more one studies the better they will do on a test however, not all students understand this, which explains why some students are more stressed than others. In order to perform well in school students need to set goals for the future and not get distracted by things in the present, like watching television or playing video games, instead of studying for a test. I am completely aware of this; nevertheless, it is still hard to do because my “hot system” wants the instant gratification of doing something fun rather than homework. Future success is hindered by the need for instant gratification. Students who achieve higher levels of academic success are those who realize academic rewards are more important than temporary satisfaction. Those
The initial shock of the significant workload and expectations can take their toll, but good time management skills can prevent multiple late nights in a row to get assignments done on time. Kelci Lynn Lucier has worked in higher education for ten years, and has experienced students struggle to try and find the balance between extracurricular activities, personal activities, and education priorities. Luckily, Lucier has four tips to help best use the time provided in a day. Lucier’s first step focuses on managing ones academic time and how it needs to be the top priority above all other curricular activities, stating: “It's important to remind yourself why you're in college in the first place: to graduate” (Lucier). Lucier’s second step is be able to manage personal time, she talks about how unrealistic it is to always be working, studying, or learning, she wants students to try and find time to do something fun with friends or a club. Lucier’s third step is to wkeep the students health in mind, it does no good to stay up until two in the morning studying over a history mid-term, only to be half asleep for the test anyway; sleep is important and without can only increase the stress. Lucier’s fourth and final step is to not be afraid to seek help with your time management, she states: “The most important thing to have for time
Shellenbarger presents five ways to improve your study skills. Through other people’s experiences and studies Shellenbarger is able to support her claim of the helpful tips for getting the most from your studying while appealing to her audience through her organization and relevant references.
Reading the article Lake and von Baeyer (2005) “Tips for Successful Students”, I realize that most characteristics are necessary for one to succeed as a student in any area of life. For example, one must ask questions and take notes in order to interact with the professor and further their knowledge in a particular subject. These two skills coincide together along with the initiative to achieve a certain stardom. One aspect of learning is never lonesome, though it is possible to be additionally gifted in one region over another.
During my high school years, I can confidently say I have excelled in my academic endeavours. This success is partially due to my desire to learn. I am always intrigued by the lessons and concepts that are at the core of assigned work. My passion for learning has facilitated my learning process; because I am usually interested in the material that is being taught, my ability to retain and understand information is heightened. My academic success is also due to my drive to do the best I can. Since grade nine, I have demanded excellence from myself in all academic subjects. I strived to perform to the best of my abilities in the first high school years so that I would adopt that habit early and take it with me through the senior high school years. Finally, my academic excellence
Richard Rodriguez?s essay, Hunger of Memory, narrates the course of his educational career. Rodriguez tells of the unenthusiastic and disheartening factors that he had to endure along with his education such as isolation and lack of innovation. It becomes apparent that Rodriguez believes that only a select few go through the awful experiences that he underwent. But actually the contrary is true. The majority of students do go through the ?long, unglamorous, and demeaning process? of education, but for different reasons (Rodriguez, 68). Instead of pursuing education for the sake of learning, they pursue education for the sake of job placement.
Learning your first job is an outstanding article which was written by Robert Leamnson,PhD, who is a professor Umass Dartmouth. He (Dr.Leamnson) in his article gives blunt advice on what to do be a successful student in college. I would recommend that all first year students be required to read this material; especially for those struggling with remembering what they learned or studied.
With the expectations set for students by parents, high schools, and colleges, students find themselves in difficult positions. Should they study for a test or try to get a few hours of sleep? Does a homework assignment take priority over an extracurricular competition? About
Published in the text Literature and the Environment a Reader and Nature and Culture “Take This Job and Shove It” by Theodore Roszak. When Roszak publish his essay in 1969 along with his other book Person/Plant: The Creative Disintegration of Industrial, he wanted to spread a new idea of ecopsychology to the world. In this essay, Theodore Roszak argues about the people’s frustration and anger about their jobs and how it affected their behavior throughout their lives according to hiddenhistoryx.org.
I believe that one should constantly learn and seek new skills and information since it enhances one’s understanding of the world, provide opportunities, and develop skills. Committed to learning, I am willing to spend the necessary time to cultivate my mind in the quest for knowledge and I achieved this through diligence, perseverance, discipline, and by providing the best work possible in the workplace around me. This ambition to push for excellence would be a beneficial trait to have in the future, for I still strive to put quality into everything I do, even when I do not receive any recognition or praise, and this attitude would help me make rapid strides not only in my academic career but my life overall.
In this portion of Sanders’s Becoming a Learner, he describes the outcomes of becoming a learner. Sanders states four outcomes of becoming a learner: creativity, critical thinking, communication skills, and better character. I consider both communication skills and depth of character to be of equal importance, but for the sake of this journal, I believe the development of communication skills is most important and will have a critical impact on my career and my life. First off, let me state that I would like to pursue a career in editing, and to have any business at all, I will need to have good communication skills so I can form a trusting relationship with my clients, otherwise they may take their business elsewhere. More importantly, I intend to become a wife and a mother, and strong relationships are
While only having been at John Carroll University for a few months, my approach to learning has already drastically changed. Choosing a university to attend is one of the hardest decisions an eighteen-year old has to make. It essentially determines the course of your life and what you are going to do with it. However, even harder than that decision is being able to pursue the education and keep up with the studies that come with a degree. My learning expedition in college thus far has been an ever-changing one, particularly due to the realizations I have come to in the Honors Colloquium: Life of the Mind course this fall. Through the discussions of various scholars on learning, memory, and other similar subjects, in contrast to my previous
Upon reviewing the “Best Strategies for success in school” I realize that I now apply many ideas I use to ignore to my school approach such as getting to know my instructors, breaking down projects into more manageable tasks to avoid procrastination, and staying healthy. All the strategies listed are important but the three key strategies that will remain with me the longest throughout my academic career will be to getting help with difficult class work early, keeping most
I have poor attitudes towards managing time, such as managing time to study. Developing effective study habits is important as they will help me to use my study time more productively and will also help to handle stress. Therefore, learning some effective memory techniques, developing a good support network and working with other class members will enhance our study habits (Anthony, 2012). So it is important for me to make an action plan about time
Allocating more time towards having fun rather than focusing on schoolwork or studying in general also affects student’s time management. Since they have every opportunity of flexibility with minimal boundaries involved, there is the urge to enjoy the newfound liberty, and as a result, neglect of assignments, deadlines bypassed and incompetent test results. For that reason, the commitment to study is only realized when exams are approaching thereby causing panic to the student as the realization that class materials have not been covered starts to arise.
