The movie “Apollo 13” is a great example of the different styles of leadership and conflict management presented by the main characters like Gene Kranz, Jim Lovell, Frank Borman, Ken Mattingly, and Jack Swigert. The first scene there Gene Kranz, the main commander of the Houston Control Center is informed by the medical staff member that three of the Apollo 13 crew members removed their biomedical sensors from their body being tired of western world, represents “Laissez- Faire” leadership style. In response to this information Mr. Kranz replies with confidence and a smile on his face: “Let’s give them a little slack”. He trusts them and knows that the crewmembers are very experience and skilled, and the small medical equipment will not affect their performance and effectiveness of their action. He delegates the tasks, but he leaves the decision about the way the task will be completed to their choices, without imposing strict rules and total obedience. According to …show more content…
He asks them to wake up everybody who can support mission, the engineers who designed every circuit and switches in the spacecraft, people who knows details of the machines and equipment to work the problem. He knows that everybody needs to stay cool and focused to overcome the enormous challenges. He tells them he does not care what the equipment was designed to do, but what he can do, and invites everybody to get back to work. This is an example of democratic leadership, because he commands the rest of the team to come up with the plan, however the final decision belongs to him. “To be influential, the democratic leader uses expert power and the power base afforded by having close, personal relationships” (Kelly, 2012,
He notes that the crew seemed relieved by the departing Commander and realized that he must come up with a new leadership model to reach his crew. As he noted in the introduction that high percentage of turnover among crew bothered him and he notes some trends in society that contribute to this problem. The long economic boom had made most people unafraid of losing their jobs, or finding new ones. Thus he believed it manager’s challenge to retain them by motivating them to “work with passion, energy, and enthusiasm.” (p.12) By reading over the exit surveys he assumed as many that low pay was a main reason for people leaving, but was shocked when it was in fact 5th. The top four are strikingly similar to the slide we studied in class on “What Associates Want from Their Job” in wanting appreciation, ability to make impact, not being listened to, and more responsibility. This helped him understand his crew better and try to “see the ship through the eyes of the crew.” (p.13) He encouraged his crew to challenge the way in which they carried out their jobs by asking, “Is there a better way to do what you do?” If so, then he wanted them to take the responsibility one their own to implement the change, unless it involved major implications.
Leadership is now more evident than ever in our everyday lives as well as in the everyday media. The movie Hidden Figures by Theodore Melfi is a demonstration of leadership in my many different aspects. This movie is the story of three African American women that were an important asset to NASA during the early years of the Space Race. The movie highlights the concepts of Servant Leadership, Authentic Leader, the Situational Approach to leadership, Leader-Member Exchange Theory and Adaptive Leadership.
While the movie provides the dramatic fuel to entertain anyone that can understand the danger the men faced, the real story lies behind the successful failure that was Apollo 13 in the three astronauts and NASA experts. Within the storyline a multitude of examples of the leadership skills, theories, and traits that were all called upon in desperation to successfully bring the astronauts home can be found. The real success is seen within the leadership attributes of Apollo Commander Jim Lovell, Flight Director Gene Kranz, and the astronauts and NASA experts as two groups, as they each worked in separate ways to find solutions to the various problems that plagued this mission.
A true leader is a person who takes initiative and does what is needed to lead a group of people. If they need to, they will make any sacrifices, take the ability to take control and charge of a group. Ralph displays initiative and leadership in the book, “Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding, by leading the innocent group of kids to survival.
Traditionally, analysis on roles for effective leadership surround corporate or military settings with clearly defined problems, discernable issues, and areas where hypothesis can be made, models formed, predictions tested, and outcomes verified. Analyzing a film like Seabiscuit for the roles of leadership present many interesting questions about leadership and what it means to be a leader. The film Seabiscuit chronicles the lives of individuals as they become intertwined to produce an outcome, training a horse to race. At what point do individuals stop seeing themselves, in their daily lives, as individuals and begin seeing themselves as members of groups having to take on leadership and

The 1989 movie “Glory” shows the true meaning of leadership and sacrifices that need to be made within a group of people in order to show what team work is really about. During the film many tensions were high specially because it happened during the time of The American Civil War and people of colored were being allowed to join and become soldiers. In the movie everyone had the opportunity to meet one another and sent down the rules and regulations that needed to be followed in order for everyone to succeed together. However, there are certain characters that will be closely looked at in order to understand their behavior, the type of leaders that they are, and the way they handle things in a certain way.
Gene Kranz, the legendary flight controller for NASA during the Apollo 13 mission motivated his team and executed careful planning, extraordinary leadership skills, and also was able to
This research will explain how different leadership theories directly were applied to situations in the movie “Remember the Titans”. Although only a few of the theories were available at the time, the individuals exhibited sound leadership and follower ship identified by modern research on leadership. In the movie Remember the Titans, coaches Yoast and Boone demonstrate leadership through the three leadership styles; authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire.
The film, Apollo 13, is based on the real-life crisis that occurred April 13, 1970 on board the Apollo spacecraft. The two main characters, Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) and Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) are the key players who will address how a leader is able to survive and thrive in a world in which unexpected events occur on a regular basis. They portray the effective styles of leadership in balance with their ever changing surroundings, as well as their ability to maintain their interpersonal relationships with a group under unfavorable conditions. This film is a powerful movie because it makes clear to the viewer just how often disruptions and discontinuities occur. Also, it is an excellent example of how leaders must be able to meet
1. The movie “Invictus” shows great examples of the trait leadership theory that Mandela portrayed as the President of South Africa. Mandela was able to influence the people of South Africa through his traits of being an extravert leader and having great integrity. According to the text, extraverts are sociable, assertive, and energetic people. Mandela displayed traits of an extravert leader. Whenever he would greet people he always had a genuine smile and good intentions towards everyone he met. Even the people who worked for him, especially his security, were expected and required to always have a smile to portray a welcoming atmosphere. Mandela was a very sociable person, he made sure to go to all the rugby tournaments and had a very
A consultative style encourages discussion with the team; the leader presents the situation or problem and may possibly suggest a provisional decision. They then invite discussion about it and get suggestions and ideas, the leader then decides. Positives of this style include group synergy ‘none of use is as clever as all of us’, and acknowledgment that the team has something to contribute to the decision-making process. Disadvantages of this style could include slower decision making due to consultation, and the expectation of the team or individuals that they will always be consulted.
Without the leaders who took control, prioritize and communicated the goals of everyone involved in safely getting Jim, Jack and Fred home. Gene strong resolve of “we have not lost and American in space, and we’re not going to lose one on my watch! Failure is not an option” Gene believed that and how he handled the situation made everyone at mission control believe it also. Everyone at ground control had one goal and they worked together to make sure that that goal was
Acting as observers in this case, we are reviewing the leadership from the perspective of the son of Caesar, Commodus. A man, with love lost. A man, without the desired virtues set by his Father. A man, without morals, as stated by his Father. A man, who competes for favor, trust, honor and value with an authentic leader like Maximus, someone whom has also had the love of Commodus Father and fails to connect with his followers.
