The Leadership EXCEL June session focusing on Civil/Criminal Justice consisted of a visit to Angola State Penitentiary on Wednesday, June 17. The objective of the session was to acquaint participants with the state criminal justice system. Board members leading the all-day session were: Ted Landry, George Pourciau, Joey Savoie Suzy Webb, and Program Coordinator, Trudy Marceaux.
The first stop of the tour brought participants to the prison’s auto repair training facility. This is just one of the many trade skills that inmates can learn and become certified in while being incarcerated. Mrs. Lisa Ninchritz, the coordinator for the Harvest Fest was able to give each of our team members a role which helped us manage our team very effective while working in the kitchen and serving food for the guest that attended the festival. Mrs. Ninchritz was very thankful for learning of our idea for the team to provide baked goods that were needed for the festival. These baked goods helped them with their goals as well as for our team’s goals and were an important part of our deliverable, which turned out to be a great success for BSCS sales of baked goods. It’s not that the doctors don’t want to help the lives of their patients; furthermore, they are unaware of a food pantry close by and are short a few extra hands to help them out. In regards, Health Leads was born of these conversations becoming a simple model where doctors and nurses can prescribe nutritional food, heat for the winter, and other essentials. The patients would then take their prescriptions to the front desk where a team of well-trained college student advocates work side by side to connect them to community resources.
