Leadership:
1. Define leadership and explain its importance for organizations. Leadership is one of the most important and commonly discusses issues and topic in relation to organizational success. Actually, the strength and success of an organization is directly proportional to the strength and success of its leaders. Based on a summary of all ideas regarding this topic, Daft & Marcic (2012) define leadership as the use of influence among people in order to achieve goals (p.371). Since influence is used as the means to realize certain goals, leaders work with their subordinates towards the realization of goals. Moreover, these authors state that leadership is people-centered and goes beyond administrative and problem-solving activities. The most important aspect of leadership to an organization is that it's the key to organizational success and productivity. As previously mentioned, an organization's success is dependent on its leadership.
2. Describe how leadership is changing in today's organizations.
As an important aspect to the success of organizations in accomplishing their goals, leadership is changing in modern organizations. Generally, the change in leadership in today's organizations occurs based on the changes in organizational needs. As a result, leadership evolves with economic conditions, social and cultural changes, technological advancements, and labor conditions. Therefore, leadership changes in today's organizations are dependent on the environmental
Leadership entails guiding others to realize particular goals using a variety of skills (Sullivan & Garland, 2011); Weihrich & Koontz, 2008). Likewise, Spector (2006) defined leadership as the art of influencing others to readily and actively endeavour towards achieving goals set by the team. Additionally, Spector (2006) emphasized that there is a shared theme that leadership comprises influencing individual belief systems, behaviours and feelings. As such, the smooth running of an organization requires effective leadership.
To me “Leadership means leading people for positive outcomes”. An effective leader may have many aspects but the relationship that exists between a leader and their followers is one of the most important aspects of leadership which can determine the success quotient in any organization.
Leadership has been described as the “process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”...
At the present time, leadership, especially effective leadership plays an increasingly significant role in the organization, which can be regarded as the process of affecting activities of an organized group in its efforts forward target setting and target achievement (Daft, 2011). From this perspective, organizations in every walk of life are in pursuit of effective leadership in order to ensure the competitive advantage (Schriesheim et al., 1999). Although there is no unique definition about effective leadership, precisely, in light of Lussier & Achua (2007), there are two basic requirement on effective leadership: for one thing, effective leadership will ensure that reach the target of the group can be reached effectively; for another, leadership can impose positive influence on the group members, and motivate them to Maximum their potentials.
Daft, R. L. (2011). Conventional leadership. In R. L. Daft, Leadership (p. 153 chapter 6).
Leadership in an organization often plays a critical role, and is frequently, though not always, one of the major drivers of the success or failure of a company. (Bass, 1990) Effective leadership helps a company through times of peril and brings a future of brightness. It makes a corporation successful. However, what is leadership? According to Kouzes and Posner, it is the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared aspirations. (1995, p.30) Leaders set a clear direction for us; they help us realize what is ahead; they support us to achieve and win; they encourage and inspire us when we feel depressed. Without leadership, an organization will degenerate into chaos and unstructured because people view things in different ways.
In today’s competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various authors. Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task of goal setting and goal achievement. A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause. Not by words, but by their actions is
Organizations depend on the management and leadership skills of individuals in order to be successful. Leaders do not have to be managers but are equally important. Leaders are individuals who possess traits, behavior and abilities to influence others to accomplish tasks and other needed objectives for the company. Leadership is defined as “the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization. . . .” (House et al., 1999, pg. 184).
This era has become very competitive and in order for organizations to be successful they need leaders to establish and manage relationships and lead their subordinates accordingly in order to achieve the company’s mission and objectivity. Leadership overall plays a very important role in the success of a company because the leader controls their subordinates behavior. If subordinates have uncertainties that are not directed accordingly it can result in an unhealthy environment, and in turn it will affect the growth of the organization, therefore good leadership is necessary.
Leadership comes with responsibilities. Taking an organization to places it has never been, through new ideas and change, aids in building a responsible organization. Effective leaders tend to surround themselves with a group of individuals with different perspectives and not necessarily like themselves. Moving into a leadership role often involves letting go of some of the assignments and responsibilities held in the past. As the leader, enable others to deliver results and complete tasks. The work may get done faster and more effectively if the leader is involved, but enabling others to deliver results will lead to a more productive and cohesive team. Each individual possesses their own unique traits and abilities used to provide results for their team. Team members need confidence from their leader that allows them to accomplish goals that have been asked of them. Leaders should help create a comfortable environment for their colleagues, who in turn, enjoy coming to work
Leadership is a process of influencing activities of a particular group of people with the aim of attaining certain stipulated goals. In defining leadership there is need to consider a particular group, the common goals and the duties that are allocated to specific members of the group depending on their abilities (Fiedler 1976). Leadership therefore cannot successfully occur unless members of the group are given different considerations in terms of personality, traits and responsibilities. In considering leadership, it is important to look at the leader, the group or organization they are leading, the members as individuals and the situation; these are
There are certain essential elements that constitute the definition of leadership. Organizations are experiencing a rapid transformation in the environment, which has caused them to reevaluate how they do business. Economic changes, globalization, and expansions in technology have warranted the need to adapt quickly to changes in the environment (Schneider, 2002). Organizational leadership has three general components: setting the direction for the organization, organizational performance, and change management (Johnson, 2011). It is critical for organizations to position themselves in this competitive market for success.
Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower made famous a quote that stated, “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” (Notable-quotes.com). One of the most important aspects of the work area is leadership. Without leadership, there will be no guidance to for teamwork and the percentage of successful goal will be slim to none. Becoming a great leader is no easy feat however. An exceptional leader must lock in on specific attributes such as intellect, moral character, and human
The art of leadership is multifaceted, with areas for continued opportunity and improvement. A strong and effective leader possess a well-rounded set of skills and characteristics that allow for the group being led to be powerful followers. This is essential in order to have both leader and followers focused on a purpose and vision. Regardless of the type of organization, leadership is a necessity in a professional practice. On the contrary, with ineffective leadership in place, it creates a sense of chaos, offering minimal
