Internet became a huge source of opportunities in 21st century. We meet people, make money, study, shop, entertain ourselves, and do so many other things through online. Computers, phones, and other gadgets almost replaced our daily items and saved us a lot of time. However there is an evil side of this trend. We became more open online, than we are in real live. We say what we want to say, discriminate, judge, harass, and threaten each other, knowing that we will not get punished for these actions. The sterner sex finds it simpler to take an advantage of women, threat, and violate without limiting freedom of speech. Laurie Penny, in her story describes her personal experience and how she was treated on the Internet. Many people gain a source of power when they are insulting others online and women in particular. The question is why is that women are the easiest to disrespect and judge? Why can’t we have the same power of “freedom of speech”? When women try to speak up or write in public they are considered of …show more content…
She believed that race and gender barriers did not exist in the beginning, but soon realized that it is not true. Being a girl online is as much difficult as it is in real life. Just by being tagged on a few provocative pictures many years ago, she was manipulated, harassed by a man and that would destroy her career if she did not “handle the situation”. This man wanted to show that he had power over her and he could ruin her life just by showing the pictures to the other people. At the same time females online are seemed to be judged by their looks and provocative profiles. If you do not look hot and sexy you are not even considered to exist. However if you show some parts of your body you become more interesting to public. This also attracts more creepy comments and harassments. Some girls put themselves in these shoes not thinking of the
Of course, readers have to think about time periods where women voices were silenced. Still today when a woman shares an opionion an man might fight back because they believe they have no right to share
If women are allowed to speak out and to be more than simply wives and mothers, they can teach the world about their experiences and show what they have to
In a country where freedom of speech is at the foundation, one would think that women are free to express themselves in whatever manner they see fit, including online. In contrary to this belief, sexism has been evident in many social media platforms online. It seems impossible to live in a world where sexism does not exist. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram are home to sexist remarks and arguments between strangers, celebrities, friends, and acquaintances. In the article, “Cybersexism” by Laurie Penny, she claims that the Internet was made to be a gender free environment but that over the years the Internet has not become a safe place for women. While Penny makes a few valid points, like the Internet sexualizing
The internet connection and technology has brought great progress, prosperity, innovation, and life improvement of the society, along with these benefits laid the dark side of the connected world. Any organization or individuals when connected to the virtual world, stand risking harm from nefarious activities and characters who also roam the internet with malicious and self-benefiting intentions.
The article “Women aren´t free until speech is” is written by Camille Paglia. It is an excerpt from her book “Free Women, free men”. After reading this article it gave me another perspective on the facts she presented. I have always known how important freedom of speech is, but I realized how substantial it is to be able to speak freely without interference from the government, or other institutions. Furthermore, the principles in her book are free speech and free thought. Free speech is the liberty to speak your mind without being penalized for it. Freedom of speech is a human right, and in 1949 Eleanor Roosevelts showed the human rights, where article 19 says: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression.” Not only does it
Stephen Hawking, a well-known scientist and researcher once said, “We are all now connected by the Internet, like neurons in a giant brain”. In other words, he meant that the internet is helpful to us, in every way, from getting the information around the world to getting connected with everyone. The world today is an age of internet where there is life in and outside of the web. The internet is very powerful and convenient, so that it has become an inevitable part of the Americans. On the other hand, it is not a very good thing when the big corporations and the government use it to spy on the consumers and use it as marketing tool. The online privacy and safety is a major concern in
In her article “A Woman’s Place is on the Internet,” Rebecca Mead notes that “if we have gone a long distance toward disproving the notion that a woman’s place is in the home, we are still discouragingly far from it being widely understood and accepted that a woman’s place might, safely, be online” (Mead, “A Woman’s Place is on the Internet”). Mead’s call for safety for women online speaks to the persistent misogyny and sexual harassment many women face on the Internet, and importantly, underscores the potential for feminist voices to make positive change for women on the Internet. However, the Internet is often a dangerous place for women who speak out about gender inequality. These issues are important to consider as Emma A. Jane argues, “on-line hostility is getting more prevalent, it is getting uglier, and it has a number of gendered characteristics” (“Your a Ugly, Whorish Slut” 534). Our experiences of Internet, then, are certainly marked by gender dynamics, gender norms, and gender hierarchies. The sexual harassment directed at female Internet users reflects an unequal power balance between users on the basis of gender: women are harassed on the Internet in sexually explicit and violent ways because of their gender identity. Additionally, sexual harassment directed at women who are publicly feminists and using the Internet as a means to assert their feminist viewpoints reveals that the Internet is not just
