In the essay “The Trouble with Self-Esteem”, Lauren Slater is arguing that the theory of self-esteem should be banned. Slater states that “People with High Self-Esteem pose a greater threat to those around them than people with low Self-esteem”. Humans with low self-esteem humble themselves more and work harder to be noticed and to maintain the status quo of society. Slater stated that humans with high self-esteem were dangerous and posed a threat. Slater discuses facilities that could assist with humans who cope with self-esteem issues. The individuals who need the medical assistance are the ones labeled with high self-esteem. Someone with low self-esteem are targeted by the ones who are more confident. However, Elmer voiced that “people with
In health and social profession, many service users would suffer from low self-esteem, due to the way in which society treats them because of their disability or they have been made to feel sad or unhappy about themselves. It is the health and social provider’s job to ensure they increase the service user self-esteem and ensure they are happy about themselves. The way in which service providers can improve a service user’s self-esteem is by giving an unconditional positive regard towards that service user. An unconditional positive regard is a totally non-judgemental way in which health provider view service user and value the service user in a positive way with no conditions attached. This is hard for service users in being totally non-judgemental of service users
During the 60s and 70s, the revolution of the enhancement of self-esteem came into existence into the United States’ society. Jean Twenge’s article “An Army One: Me”, she discusses how the forced instilling of self-esteem, especially in small children, has caused the current generation to develop narcissistic qualities. One would presume that by the promotion of narcissism, we would inevitably discontinue the promotion of self-esteem. However, self-esteem plays a vital role in humanity’s search for

Self-esteem and self-concept may not be synonymous on the surface, but after looking over their meanings, they appear interconnected. Just as self-esteem becomes impacted by personal surroundings and environments, McGraw posits that one’s “self” is, “like a chameleon, takes[ing] on the emotional colors of history and environment in which is has existed” (McGraw, 63). A person’s family, parents, and other negative life experiences shapes self-esteem impacts self and self-esteem. Throughout class discussions, the idea rose that even with environmental factors shaping self-perception or self-esteem, these emotions or feelings do not have to impact a person’s future. McGraw in his first chapter appears to be leading a reader down the same path to reach the realization that distorted self-concepts do not have to stay or
People with low self-esteem were often given messages—from parents, teachers, peers, or others—that failed experiences (losing a game, getting a poor grade, etc.) were failures of their whole self. Self esteem is also based on the contingency of self-worth; this refers to specific domain in people’s lives that they consider important for their self –esteem.
The author Kevin Solomons said, “You chose to process the ways you currently deal with the negative situations in your life. You also can choose to change those methods and unlearn the harmful techniques that have caused your self-esteem to plummet, thus preventing you from enjoying the things in life that you crave. You possess a natural power to heal yourself” (Solomons). The main approaches taken in the article was to show how any oppressions that a person could go through can hinder the self-esteem. The explanation
Critical occurrences throughout our life often form our opinion about how we value ourselves. Frequently the events we've seen, learned, and experience from our family, friends and in our communities, influence the way women see themselves. As women start to lack self-esteem, their confidence begins to decrease, and at some point, and time, it starts to disturb their thought process, and eventually it begins to influence the way you perceive yourself and how you view life. Alongside other aspects touch on, lack of self-worth produces a profound effect on our ability to value and care for ourselves and others.

Most people face self esteem problems at different levels. At some point in life people face this problem without realizing it. In the essay The Trouble with Self-Esteem written by Lauren Slater starts of by demonstrating a test. Self esteem test that determines whether you have a high self-esteem or low self-esteem. The question to be answered however is; what is the value and meaning of self-esteem? Melanie is really into makeup and never leaves her house without applying a full face of makeup including false eyelashes. She even has a Youtube channel where she posts makeup tutorials. But does Melanie really enjoy wearing makeup or does she feel others expect her to wear it? Does wearing makeup increase Melanie’s confidence and cause others to perceive her as more attractive, intelligent, or friendly? Cash, Dawson, Davis, Bowen, and Galumbeck (1989) found that male peers who judged photographs of women wearing makeup deemed the women to be more physically attractive than the men who saw them without makeup, while female peers were equally favorable whether makeup was worn or not. We are extending this research by adding in an extra level of how much makeup is being worn giving.
A person’s self-esteem affects whom he or she chooses to associate with, and how they look at different social groups. This is important because then depending on our level of self-esteem, it essentially tells us if (and how) we choose to associate with certain groups and not others. Those who think more highly of themselves (in terms of aspects such as race, socioeconomic status, intelligence, etc.) tend to be very protective of those within their social group and discriminatory against those who are not, so it is harder as a society to develop relationships unless someone meets certain qualities. This could affect how the population develops relationships with one another and lead to conflict amongst social groups. This leads to the idea

People’s self-esteem either high or low is shaped by their life experiences. I believe a person’s self-esteem begins to take shape at an early age, with their parents being a major influence. Kind, positive, knowledgeable and caring parents help children create a positive self-image. Parents who do not feel good about themselves or others, sometimes take it out on their childern by belittling them or discouraging them. This leads the child down a path of self-doubt and eventually given the right circumstances a lower self-esteem.
