Laura Kipnis Sexual Paranoia Summary

Laura Murphy is a member of the Lake Braddock Secondary School Parent-Teacher-Student Association in Fairfax Station, Virginia. Murphy is advocating for students at the high school to not read a particular novel. The novel that she is challenging happens to be the Pulitzer Prize winner Beloved by Toni Morrison. Murphy is not only challenging the book, but is also wanting to ban Beloved. In regards to future literature, “new polices are adopted for books assigned” that might have objectionable content.

For my case study analysis I will be reviewing the case of Laura. I am very interested in learning more about conditional substance abuse. I am also interested in learning more about the concurring presence of anxiety and substance abuse. I am particularly interested in the learning more about the use of psychoactive substances as a form of self medication for anxiety.

Carmilla fails to fall into her gender assigned rolls; she more appropriately falls into those associated with the male populace. “Males, more than females, are often under intense pressure to initiate sexual activity.” (Momoh) In addition Carmilla goes so far as to lay claim to Laura saying she belongs to her. “You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one for ever.” An intense and strong claim, one that ties in to women being considered property an antiquated notion but one appropriate for the time. Something that draws parallels to modern day is Laura’s uncomfortableness with Carmilla’s advances. “and the remainder of that evening passed without any recurrence of what I called her infatuations. “Curiosity,” is a photograph by Elena Kalis which portrays a contrast of light and dark with several hues of a particular color. The photograph depicts a mixture of various art elements, changing the perception the viewer has on the natural world to something different. Overall, “Curiosity” represents the escapism from the certain expectations of perfection in life.

Susan Griffin uses a passage in her essay “Our Secret” to describe the experiences of a woman who survived the Holocaust. She writes that at the time, World War II had not yet started, nor the mass arrests or many of the other events that led to the outbreak of persecution of the Jewish peoples. She writes that this woman, then just a girl, found herself in a group of children who were tormenting her young friend for being Jewish. She joined them, afraid to be isolated, and her mother immediately caught her and reprimanded her. In a way, this single story represents both metaphors that Griffin used in her essay to describe human interaction—the connectedness of the biological cellular system, and German guided missiles and their vicious, pitiless destruction of their victims.

“A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take” said by Cardinal Mermillod. This is true in many different ways, first that a mother can always take the place of a teacher, baker, driver, cleaning and so many more, but nobody can take the place of a mother. Arguably, the most important relationship in a girl’s life is the relationship between a mother and daughter, whether this relationship is good, “B”, or bad “Somethings We Don’t Talk About, Part 1” it impacts other relationships in different ways. Sarah Kay explores both of these relationships in a sound way. In Elizabeth Bowen’s short story “The Demon Lover,” although it may seem like a ghost tale, there is more to this. As the story goes on you start to question yourself about ‘is this really a ghost story?’ “The Demon Lover” is about a woman who discovers paranoia which is a mental condition characterized by delusions of persecution. Kathleen Drover is better understood as a disturbed schizophrenic woman whose psychosis eventually drives her to complete madness.

“Women who have experienced childhood abuse often have an impaired sense of self” which makes them “gullible and easily manipulated by others” (Kendall-Tackett 10). This coupled with the fact that Maggie was experiencing her first love, made her extremely susceptible to the bachelor’s seduction method. In the short story “Lust”, author Susan Minot sequentially recollects the past stories of an unidentified promiscuous young girl who details the sexual experiences she encounters with her previous partners. The characters within the story are illustrated in a fashion that emulates the level of disconnection between the narrator and them. The young men are mentioned and described briefly, specifically with relations to their behavior and treatment of the narrator. The main character desperately seeks validation through the men she sleeps with and is left with emotions of emptiness when they reject the proposal of substantial love. At first glance, “Sexual Paranoia” by Laura Kipnis is appalling. Is she really saying she thinks it’s okay for students to hook up with their professors? What an awful woman. However, Kipnis develops a strongly written essay that will certainly get most people to at least understand her opinion. That’s not to say I agree with everything Kipnis says. Although her argument does contain some good points, it’s flawed in a lot of ways.

5. a. there is three types of body language and nonverbal communication, eye contact, body positioning, and encouragement. Making eye contact is extremely important. Making eye contact in a conversation shows the other person that you are listening and you are interested in what is being said. Not making any eye contact makes the other person think you have no interest. Adjusting body positions are important because sitting straight up shows you care, when you slouch during an important conversation you are communicating you don’t care. Facing the person sitting straight up shows you respect them and what is being said. Nonverbally encouraging or discouraging what others say can be demonstrated in a conversation by using hand gestures and facial movement. Actively nodding and showing you are interested without talking are nonverbal ways of communication. (Lewicki, p 184-185)

Sexual behaviour is most often displayed in a relationship of trust and intimacy, and a resident who does not have this relationship with the individual exhibiting these behaviours is likely to feel uncomfortable. If these sexual behaviours occur in a setting where families are present, residents are likely to be embarrassed by the individual exhibiting responsive behaviours.

Gastric cancer is another term for stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is often reported amongst older people. People who get this do not seek the cancer until it reaches its middle or final stages. Before then, the cancer has already progressed vigorously and is hard to control. Doctors may do endoscopy, biopsy, and or imaging to see how far the cancer has spread.

Our Constitution is over two centuries old and since the birth of it as early as 1803 the Supreme Court defined its role and power in the case, Marbury v. Madison, 1803, establishing the authority to define what the law is. Thus, if the law is confusing, it is up to the courts to interpret the law through the process of judicial review. There is much controversy as to whether or not judges are following the laws as written or imposing their personal preferences and rewriting law to suit themselves. Ackerman believes “it’s a good thing that formal amendment is so hard; otherwise, the Constitution would become a mess, full of details signifying little,” (Ackerman, 2007 p. 1743). There are opposing viewpoints as to the approach and evolving perspectives in the decisions made by our judges. I will analysis the opposing proponents, originalists and Living Constitutionalists, viewpoints in their interpretation of the Constitution and present their arguments in relation to their perspective on the Constitution. In addition, I will apply their interpretational philosophies in the case Griswold v. Connecticut and ascertain the impact of their philosophies to the outcome of the case.
