There are many instances students are unsupervised or a teacher is distracted, this is when situations can occur that a bully can taunt another student. Lakeside High School is very good at limiting the time students are unsupervised. This constant supervision of students in a structured environment helps students feel safe. By monitoring all students, as well as, their behavior, teachers and administrators are more apt to identify problem areas or students, which help in the prevention of violent situations or actions. In certain instances school violence goes far beyond bullying and assaults. Some students may feel school is a safe haven, until family issues arise. Many time parents are the cause of students not feeling safe in school. Custody battles, arguments or altercations between adults over their child, can happen on school property. By training Lakeside High School employees, and giving them the ability to contact local law enforcement agencies, students will feel safer and more secure during the school day, if family problems spill over to school

Schools are no longer a safe havens for furthering knowledge; instead violence is occurring at alarming rates. Common occurrences in schools include: physical altercations, severe property damage, and bullying behaviors. According to “ThefutureofChidren.org,” youth violence in schools costs the public 158 billion dollars each year. In this decade, that rate of children inflicting violence on other children and teachers is staggering. Today’s teachers are being trained on gun safety, school lobbies are being installed with bullet proof glass, and counselors hold
The fight in Cheltenham high school started early on the morning at 7:30 a.m. When a child comes to school they should not be in a fight or see a fight during the morning. It seem unrespectful for a child to have this commonly or even everyday. The safety in this school is needed more than most schools out there, also knowing that three officers, and seven teachers were injured too on that day is unbelievable. Valerie Melecio, a senior from the school had even talked about how dangerous her school was saying “I think that the problem is discipline and lack of communication”. Given to show that Valerie does not feel safe at school, as Valerie had said “I think the problem is discipline”, on the site
Improvement in security will also contribute to a safe environment. High schools should implement the use of metal detectors as well as random searches. Although, it may be tedious to remove all metal and coins from your pockets, it will ensure safety. This security measure can be specific to each school. An example being to make the checks random throughout the week or only require it for students to have a late arrival. Random searches can also be specified such as only searching lockers or classrooms. Motion sensored cameras can also be a very effective with safety. In many school’s cameras are only in the hallways and lunchroom, but what happens when violence occurs in a classroom? All evidence will be based off hearsay. This is not an effective way of assessing the incident considering there are 3 sides to every story. Adding motion cameras to classrooms will make evidence accurate. Not only will student-student altercations be recorded, but teacher-student altercations will be recorded. Security guards themselves should also be improved. Security guards should be posted in hallways upon children arrival, during passing periods, and upon school dismissal. Security guards should also be fit enough for the job. “The results indicated that utilization of multiple security measures reduced the likelihood of exposure to property
Greetings incoming freshmen! I have been assigned to give you advice as you make the joyous transition to Oak Hills high school. Seeing as I have no real highschool experience or social experience, I am sure this instruction will go beautifully. Ah High school the marvelous and breathtaking time where hearts are broken and young lives are ruined. Highschool helps you grow into bright young adults with life experience and social skills. Because, of course shoving people into lockers and smearing ketchup in stairwells is how intelligent adults behave in the real world. Other warning signs: he was a loner, bullied by his classmates and unhappy. Fox stated that early intervention by teachers and parents may stop a potentially explosive teenager. Fox proposes that after school programs, counseling, getting peers to speak out and approaching the teen making threats as the first step in disarming the violence. The Moses Lake School District now uses surveillance cameras and staff identification badges. The district, on the recommendation of a local task force, also added an alternative middle school targeting kids who were not thriving at mainstream schools. Fox describes the impending “warning signs” of violence at school which included wearing black trench coats. I agree with Fox, and although I also believe that juveniles should be allowed to dress as they please, we should also look at teens carefully who dress in macabre, dark clothes as they are personifying how they feel. Police need to be actively involved with juveniles who bring drugs or guns to school or make threats of homicide, but as Fox mentioned Police will not get involved unless concrete evidence exists that the juvenile is breaking the law. If there is one message that can be gleaned from Fox, it is to other parents: Get involved. Know what school policies are, and know what's going on with your kids.
After the Sandy Hook, there were countless ways for students to be safe at school. In Preparing for the Unthinkable: School Safety after Sandy Hook news article, Vicki Bauman said, “ Instead of gates, guns, and metal detectors, let’s invest in the things we know will make us safer: counselors, health care, teaching positive behavior, and making sure we have services to reach out to disconnected youth and pull them back on track.” Therefore, violence is not the answer to any question or issue. The community and school system should take a stand and get the necessities that the schools need to have a safe environment for the students and faculty and staff. The school can invest in law enforcement. The law enforcement will be able to conduct a consistent search through a metal detector. The law enforcement will help the students to avoid bringing prohibited weapons to school as well as, there to protect the school.
The intention of this paper is to look at and present some issues and strategies that members of a school community think about when trying to create safer schools. Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or program that can be 100% effective in all schools. “Violence prevention programs work best when they incorporate multiple strategies and address the full range of possible acts of violence in schools. For any set of policies to work, it must be established and
Schools need to maintain a disciplined and safe learning environment. There are many disciplinary actions that are in use today and although some can disagree about the amount of discipline that is best for maturing children, it is reasonable to be in agreement that a positive learning environment begins with physical and emotional safety. School safety includes a broad range of matters, including, fighting, bullying, drugs, alcohol, weapons, and etc. Many schools use varying methods in an effort to maintain school safety. Some schools limit school access and require all visitors to sign in. Physical surveillance is another common method of addressing school safety issues along with use of staff and student identification. Among all these
Middle and junior high schools face security issues relating to students wanting to cut class. When most students are in their middle school years, they get their first truly rebellious tendencies. As such, students may want to skip school and go places that are not safe and which may expose them to vulnerabilities. Additionally, such students may also attract the attention of outsiders and attempt to bring them back to campus, which would affect the security of the entire school.
Several people have observed the lack of security that schools possess. When thinking about our own security right here in Marion, and looking at the school layout, the buildings are scattered. We have five different buildings to our school. We have security cameras, but we often do not think anything of it when a stranger
Children find little hope in their existence and school experience. In this case, most students begin to drop out of school completely in order to escape the negativity. In addition, school violence affects a child’s academic, social, and psychological well-being. It is significant to parents and teachers take responsibility as anyone else to start sorting it out. The majority of teachers do not have the proper training to support students. Parents should talk to their children often about school violence by filtering news programs such as psychological assistance. Furthermore, most students from different schools have to go through metal detectors. Many children live in fear of the prospect of other students carrying weapons or making death threats. Individuals should not blame schools and educators because a discipline of children begins at
School violence, in recent history, seems to have taken the United States by storm. Be it a shooting, such as the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, the inappropriate relationships between teacher and student, such as Stephanie Figueroa whom initiated one such relationship with her 11-year-old karate student, or the multiple fights we see on social media that take place in schools. With each passing week, we see a new story that falls in one of these categories. Today, we look at the types of, causes of and how to prevent violence in what should be a safe place and second home for our youth.
During the past decade, school safety has been at the forefront of many school districts safety polices and plans. With recent high profile school shootings, the question school districts continue to ask is how do we keep our schools safe? Administrators face heavy scrutiny when weighing approaches to school safety and student discipline. Likewise, school employees have the right to work in safe environments devoid of life-threatening behaviors (Fenning and Bohanon, 2006; Skiba and Rausch, 2006). America’s founding fathers understood the importance of a public school education. They believed educating its citizens would allow them the opportunity to learn new skills while becoming successful and productive people in society. However, our founding fathers did not predict the severe behavior changes our schools face in educating disruptive and dangerous students. America’s school districts are charged with providing solutions for disruptive and dangerous students (Fenning and Bohanon, 2006; Skiba and Rausch, 2006). School officials must address these issues with research-based interventions and collaborative resources that provide a safe learning environment for all stakeholders (Elliott and Mihalic, 2004; Schoenwald and Hoagwood, 2001). Boards of education continue to support school efforts to rethink best practices for disciplinary alternative middle schools (DAMS). Many school districts focus on research-based interventions and resources that manage aggression and
Violence in schools is a big social issue that occurs almost everyday throughout the United States. There is no way to tell when it is going to happen, but when it does, people need to be prepared. This violence leads to devastating effects on the students, teachers, and families of these kids. Some violence that occurs within the schools across the United States include physical, mental, or sexual abuse, theft, vandalism, and, the most common form, fighting and bullying. One form of violence within schools that doesn’t come to mind right away though, is gun violence. Going to a smaller school in a smaller community, this wasn’t a big concern, but it can happen within any school, anywhere.
