Lady Macbeth is presented as evil in Shakespeare ’s “Macbeth” because she requests to be filledL with evil as well as to be unsexed, she manipulates Macbeth into disrupting the natural order in Scotland and she is described as the fourth witch of the book. Lady Macbeth says, “Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts. Unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood, stop up the access and passage to remorse…” In this quote, Lady Macbeth is asking the spirits of evil to take away her femininity, to make her cruel and evil and to take away her ability to feel remorse or guilt. This proves that Lady Macbeth wants to be able to commit murder and do what is wrong and immoral, which is a characteristic of evil.
Lady Macbeth is the spur to Macbeth’s ambition. This essentially causes Macbeth to murder King Duncan in order to become king sooner, thus disrupting the natural order as Macbeth does not possess divine right to the throne. This is because the three witches in “Macbeth” represent evil potential from within human beings. The witches equivocate in order to destroy and mislead Macbeth. Lady Macbeth does not equivocate in as obvious a way as the other three witches, but she does take pleasure in misleading Macbeth through manipulation to murder King Duncan. Macbeth readily accepts the prophecies provided by the witches and he is easily manipulated by Lady Macbeth. This is one of the factors leading to the downfall of Macbeth. Lady Macbeth causes him to be insecure and paranoid about his position as the king of Scotland, which results in Macbeth committing many pointless murders, such as the murder of Banquo. Therefore, Lady Macbeth caused Macbeth’s downfall and destruction through equivocation, which proves that she is a fourth
