1) List three national stories or issues that you think could be localized to Columbia. Lack of money for extracurricular activities amongst underprivileged kids Affordable housing in college communities and beyond Gender inequality amongst salary 2) In a couple of paragraphs, explain the issue on which you’d like to focus. Why is it particularly newsworthy for Columbia? I would like to focus on the lack of money for extracurricular activities amongst underprivileged kids. I think this is a very important issue that is never talked about in the news and one that needs to be brought to life. When most people get to the “extracurricular activities” section of a college application, they just list all the things that they were able to do and don’t put any thought in it. It looks great, because it shows that you can not only do your school work, but balance other activities as well. But what we don’t understand is that many kids never get that chance to participate in these activities, and therefore they don’t get to fill out that section and they get left behind. Take football for a small example. It looks great on a resume because it is time consuming and takes a lot of willpower. It shows that you can work with a team and if you are a distinguished athlete with some awards, you might even get some money to go play it in college. But the sport is expensive, a cost that some families can’t afford to take on. It is estimated that the gear alone costs $650, not to
If a researcher wants to determine if a student who participated in extra-curricular activities in high school will have higher grades in college than a student who didn’t, they could see the cause and effect that extra-curricular activities has on a student’s college studies.

Describe the circumstances surrounding the Dred Scott case. How did this decision impact the sectional crisis? (2 points)
Extracurriculars are there for students to enjoy activities other than their academics, but it is also a way to shows that they can focus on education and outside life at the same time. Some students do not take school seriously enough. Coming to school might just be a way for athletes to participate in the sport they want to. Not every students has exceeding academic skills, however, anyone can succeed if they just try. Being able to multitask will behoove the students in the future. Undergraduates tend to separate their school and outside life. Older adults do this as well; but instead of school, it is work they have to worry about. During exam week, students will want to study and it will take away their eating and sleeping time. Eating and studying is a vigorous way to
In my point of view, extracurricular activities are what shape a student into what they are or become. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization that helps students obtain the leadership, hands on, professional, and employability skills that America is searching for. Although at first, students do not find this extracurricular activity as interesting as a sport, they fail to recognize that this organization is for students and ran by students. As Pope John Paul II said, “The future starts today, not tomorrow.” Today, I know that SkillsUSA is helping me take a step closer to what I want to do in my
With a regular schedule for all these students, everyone is expected to simply do the work at home, and come back to school to turn it in and receive more and do the same process over and over. But when there are other activities a child can be involved in, it makes routines have a slight change. Especially if these certain “activities” are being a requirement and not just an option because there are always students who never try new activities and miss out on opportunities. Therefore, students should be offered extracurricular activities in their schools because it gains skills and builds pride to be successful academically in Anaheim. In the documentary, “Mad Hot Ballroom” the director, Marilyn Agrelo, states that “the kids that are
The goals I proposed throughout high school helped me give back to society and developed me as a person. When I decided to dedicate myself to extra-curricular activities it wasn’t simple because I faced financial difficulty within my family and living in a single parent household but I managed to take on the challenge of balancing the difficult environment I was raised in and achieving my educational goals.
Since Early College High School was founded in the year 2006, the school and its students have always been at disadvantage. The school has lacked several opportunities such sports, scholarship opportunities, etc. However, a topic that has been the spotlight of discussion amongst students over the course of eleven years has been the lack of extracurricular activities. This problem does not only affect students, but it rather affects faculty members as well. Although there has been a slow but gradual increase in solving this problem, this change has come forth at a lengthy rate. It has been 11 years since change has been prompted, and although the current students are benefiting from this change, there have been several generations of
In an article, an expert said ¨Although academic work is vital, these extra-curricular activities are also significant for students because they teach responsibility and teamwork¨(¨Reasons Why the School Day Should Be Shorter¨). Colleges
ISIS is preforming genocide and the U.S. is trying to pass a bill for the state and Justice departments to join and help countries identify and punish genocide in their homelands. U.S. and Canadian government officials have been deafened by some sonic device while visiting Cuba, nobody knows who is doing it and why. Hong Kong was supposed to be living in a democratic and liberal society with a one-party dictatorship, but the authorities are not letting that happen and have jailed three protesters. Colin Kaepernick will be put in the National Museum of African American History and Culture for kneeling during the National Anthem, the author believes he is undeserving of this because he brought more attention to himself than the cause. The University of Southern California students are calling their mascot a racist symbol, because the name resembles Robert E. Lee’s favorite horse’s name, but the horse itself is paid for with an endowment so the author thinks it is not going to be removed. The author mourns the loss of the Republican consultant Arthur Finkelstein, in the authors opinion he was one of the best consultants and had a “virtuous hand” in the election of James L. Buckley to junior senator of New York.
Over the course of this semester I learned a great deal about topics ranging from our constitution to how our political parties work, but the interesting topics to me were: “Civil War Amendments” and the cases that caused them as well as came from them, “The First Amendment” and the cases that involved it, and discussion of “Welfare” as well as the cases that involved financial assistance from the government. I chose these three topics because as an African American young woman I feel that these directly affect me on a daily basis. If it was not for the brave men and women today I would not be able to go to Lamar University which was a predominately white school until July 30, 1956 when it was integrated. The first amendment states,” Congress
How Important Are Extracurricular Activities for your college application? Do schools really care what clubs you joined, what sports you played, what charity you may have volunteered for, or what musical instrument you possibly tried to master?
Homelessness as my topic of interest. This issue was very interesting knowing how certain individuals became homeless. This topic is perceived in mainstream society because these are people who live on our streets because their family put them out or they got fired from their job. When They are put on the street they have no place to go and nowhere to turn. Living on the street is an easy way out for them because they don't have a backup plan. People who have cars, jobs, and money look at homeless people like their worthless or they don’t belong.
Throughout the course I have learned about the many foundations and policies of American government. This class emphasizes the three branches of government and governmental policy issued from the branches including civil rights and civil liberties, social policy, and foreign policy. However, the three subject areas studied this semester that I found to be most interesting and informative are social policy, the presidency, and civil rights.
