La Tafona When I think of my childhood, one thing stands out: my time in Spain. Specifically, my time on my family’s olive farm on the island of Mallorca stands out the most. Every year since I was born, I have visited our farm, which is located in the mountains and a five miles from the nearest town. The farm, named Pedruxella, translated to mean the place in the rocks in Catalan, is where I call home for two months every summer and almost all thanksgivings and even for two years when I was six through eight years old. One event is what I will remember forever--olive picking. This process has been imprinted in my mind since I was born and is a major part of my identity. At our farm, this is a tradition that we partake in with many friends. We drive up to the terraces and lay nets down on the ground underneath the tree. Then, we use long wooden poles to hit the tree and knock the olives down into the nets. Our farmer uses a chainsaw to cut branches down and we knock the olives down on the ground. This is the traditional way to harvest olives. After we finish collecting olives around the terraces, we load up the pickup truck and tractor with the nets of olives and drive them to the garage in one of the barns on the farm.
