In the story “La Relacion” by Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, the Spaniards and American Indians encounter in the middle of a catastrophe. Around the early 1500’s, the Spaniards faced a shipwreck when they were on their way to North America and they ended up on the coast of Texas. The point of view of this story allows the readers understand the heart and lifestyle of American Indians which will be explained further in this text. In the beginning of the story, it is discovered the good morals and huge heart of the American Indians. When the Spaniards first arrived to the Texas Coast, it is later learned that if it wasn’t for the American Indians they would have not survived. The hospitality that the American Indians offered to the remaining survivors was endless, they made sure that they had everything they needed. Futher in the story, Spaniards lose their lives after the first sailing attempt to leave the Texas Coast. When the American Indians discover that some of them died during the attempt, their compassion is shown by the genuine weeping that they shared with them. Finally, after the Spaniards asked desperate help and shelter, the American Indians took immediate action and made sure they survived. In the story it is mentioned that after the dead of one of a brother or son, the household did not gather any food for three months. The only way that they could obtain food was by the help and support from neighbors and relatives. Due to this costum, a lot of people died from starvation.
