The Virgen de Los Ángeles, Our Lady of the Angels, or La Negrita, the black virgin, is Costa Rica’s patron saint. La Negrita is a small mulatto statuette of the Virgin Mary found in Cartago, Costa Rica on August 2, 1635 by a native women. The story says that she tried to take the statuette with her but it reappeared twice back where she had found it. After that the townspeople built a shrine around the figure. In 1824, the statuette was declared the patron saint and it now rests on a gold platform at the main altar in the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles in Cartago. Every August 2nd, people from all over the country walk 14 miles from San Jose to the Cartago, some even complete the last hundred feet to the basilica on their knees,
