My trip to the La Brea Tar Pits, taught me of the biodiversity that was within California, from the Columbian Mammoths, Shasta Ground Sloth, Dire Wolves, and Sabretooth Cats. The museum emphasized that most of the extinct animals that were on display were extinct due to climate change or hunted by the earliest tribes throughout California and North America. The museum points out that most of these animals were large, but doesn’t show the reason as to why the larger animals went extinct, but the smaller animals survived the extinction. The museum also mentions that night-stalking animals weren’t found in the pits as during the cool temperatures throughout the evening would solidify the asphalt. This extinction was known as the Pleistocene
Megafauna simply means large animals, in which most have become extinct within the last 20 000 to 50 000 years. The extinction of megafauna was, debatably, due to climate change and human expansion. Although, Africa still retains some megafauna, such as the elephant or the rhinoceros. Australia has managed to keep many examples of relict species, some from the time of the megafauna. These include the Crocodile, Wollemi Pine and Stromatolites.
Since the settlement of the Lake Tahoe Basin people have deforested mountain sides, and killed almost all natural life within the waters. Just as the Lake Tahoe area has felt the
The Southern California Chaparral is in itself threatened. Fires, overgrazing, and invasive species have disrupted it over the course of many years and it is now in danger. According to the WWF, the Southern California Chaparral “ one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America”(California Chaparral and Woodlands). The Chaparral are often close to residential and commercial areas and this can be detrimental. Runoff from the residential areas can contaminate the soil and stop primary production. More land is also revamped and turned into more human expanses. The land is often treated very poorly and the habitat of many animals are destroyed. Unfortunately when fires occur, the brush is able to grow back, but the wildlife is adversely affected.Because of fires and human intervention, there are a few endangered plants and animals. Some endangered animals include the California Gnatcatcher and Heermann Kangaroo mouse. In addition, there are a lot of flora that are very rare and only exist in this area. The Gnatcatcher’s habitat has been encroached by shopping malls and homes while the Heermann
“California has it’s own list of endangered species of animals.” Like all states, California is home to many species of animals that are listed and protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. (http://www.allaboutwildlife.com/endangered-species/californias-endangered-animals/6037)
Megafaunal extinction: The extinction of large animal species such as mammoths and several species of horse and camels. No one knows what caused their extinction, whether it was from the excessive hunting or the Ice Age becoming a drier climate.
The shift in climate 10,000 years ago took a toll on many different types of animals that can now be found in La Brea. Barlow (2000) notes that " only a half dozen species of Pleistocene dung beetles were fortuitously preserved in the La Brea tar pits of California, along with the bones of ground sloths, sabertooth cats, dire wolves, and carrion-feeding birds." (Barlow 2000, p. 209)
Death Valley has a number of different ecosystems in its park; the threats are the same, lack of rain, heat, human activity, and species themselves. While there is no outline for the natural occurrences, the human one is on the way of being helped. Fisheries and fencing off of threaten areas, and the restoration of them is the way we can fight the combatants that threaten these
The usage of land in the Mojave Desert is negatively affecting the desert as a whole. “Some key species are indicators of the overall ecological health of the region … most of these species continue to decline.” was stated by the mojave defenders. Certain animals such as the Mojave ground squirrel represent the health of our environment, and certain groups are inefficiently using the land of the Mojave Desert. Ultimately, this is leading to a decline in these populations.
Summary and Critique of Twilight of the Mammoths: Ice Age Extinctions and the Rewilding of America
Over 98% of all organisms that have lived on Earth are now extinct. A mass extinction event occurs when a large number of species die out within a small time frame (relative to the age of Earth). Mass extinctions are intensively studied for both cause and effect, as there is usually room for debate regarding catalysts that precede the extinction and the massive influx of new biological species that follows. There have been five major mass extinctions, dubbed the “Big Five,” that have wiped out at least 50% of the species living at those times. The most well known mass extinction of the Big Five, with the decimation of every species of non-avian dinosaur, is the Cretaceous-Paleogene
Bill Freedmen, author of “Endangered Species—Human Causes Of Extinction and Endangerment” notes, “scientists approximate that present extinction rates are 1,000 to 10,000 times higher than the average natural extinction rate.” These distressing numbers should be acted upon to save the endangered species and avoid the catastrophic change to this planet if these species were to become extinct. In order to produce change, people need to recognize that habitat loss, climate change, and poaching are all factors in why our animal species are going extinct.
Ernest Hemingway was one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century. His simple style, lucid depictions, and relatable narratives propelled him into a world of literary fame. These unique attributes are inimitable; Hemingway relates to the reader on a deeper level that even the best imitators cannot achieve. For this and many other reasons, critics praise Hemingway for the indefinable work of an exceptional writer. One of his most well-known novels, A Farewell to Arms, is notorious for its depth into the reality and adversity of war. Hemingway’s personal experiences during World War I are evident in this renowned novel. He uses these tragic familiarities to penetrate the reader’s mind with the grievous effects of war and loss.
It’s clear that a great extinction is coming from the evidence of the destruction of other species around us. The choices made by the human race have too often negatively affected the surrounding species. Tracy Wilson, the site director for HowStuffWorks.com, in an article for Animal Planet, states that
In a sliver of the start of the play, Lady Macbeth is presented as ruthless, manipulative and ambitious, almost completely able to get what she wants, although Macbeth had thoughts about killing the king, the witches and Lady Macbeth really pushed him over the edge and compelled him to go through with the murder of Duncan. Lady Macbeth is further shown to be ambitious by the fact she wished to be a man so she could go through with the murder herself, and that she dehumanises her husband for being a coward, she is undoubtably a very strong character as she is obviously portrayed as.
There are several roles, types, and functions of law in society today; whether it is an individual, worker, or business owner everyone is subject to and must abide by the federal and state courts and laws of this country. The judicial review is the doctrine under which legislative and executive actions are subject to review by the judiciary. This is an example of check and balances in a modern governmental system. Working on a federal installation (Tinker AFB) the industry has to follow both federal guidelines and laws.
