“What is the definition of this word? What about this one? How do you pronounce this?” The 7-year-old girl would not stop asking questions about what she called “weird squares and circles.”
Curiosity about the world filled the mind of Maria, a young lady who I met while I volunteered at the Korean Adoptee Family Foundation, also known as KORAFF. At KORAFF, student volunteers provide an enriching educational program to Korean adoptees teaching them about Korean culture and tradition. One day, she brought a Korean book to me and asked me read it to her. As I read it, she quietly listened to me with bright eyes. Maria’s curiosity and fascination about the Korean culture motivated me to create a Korean class within this organization. For that reason, the organization chose me to represent and plan class curriculum for it. As I began forming lessons, I decided not make them sit for hours and bore them with cliché writing/reading lessons. Instead, with the help of my mom, who teaches at a Korean school, I devised entertaining and inclusive activities like arts and crafts, games, and music to teach these children. Aiding others with a developing interest in my culture, I put forth an intensive amount of effort into the Korean Language program at KORAFF. Coincidentally, I felt that incorporating knowledge about the Korean culture and it’s traditions into the teachings for these young adoptees would help bring families closer together. KORAFF itself is an immensely devoted and supportive program. However, my proudest moment was when I appropriated a leadership role by producing a new class system.
