Edward was in battle. He was protecting the castle for the third time, the french attacked and he had defeated many opponents already. He was attacked by three knights this time, he was about to be struck by the sword of a horseman when he brought up his shield and deflected the blow! If edward didn’t have a shield he would have joined the rest of his defeated troops. Medieval Shields were developed to protect, a knight or soldier from the direct blows from the weapons of their enemies. Shields used during the Middle Ages were also used as heavy weapons. The use of the shield as an actual weapon was practised by knights at the Pell/target practice. Pell training had to have hours of practice to increase skill. There are different kinds of shields. The different types of shields are Bouche shield, Buckler Shield, Heater Shield, Kite Shield, Pavise Shield and Targe Shield. …show more content…

The Buckler shield is shaped like a round metal sun hat with latch in the middle to hold, it was between 8 and 16 inches in diameter. The Heater shield is shaped like a round sided triangle but straight at the top with a long rope to hold at the back, it was tall enough to set the bottom tip on the ground and the top would reach your chin, it was made in the late 12th century. The Kite shield is shaped like a kite but rounded, it was three to five feet high and two to three feet wide, it was used from the 10th to the 13th century. The Pavise shield looks like a rectangle with round sides and was big enough to cover your entire body. The Targe shield was a round piece of wood with a metal rim and spikes on the front big enough to shield the chest and arms it was between 18 and 21 inches in
