Some call accidents mistakes; others call them luck. But, no matter the accident, something is learned. Think of Dr. Alexander Fleming and his accidental discovery of penicillin in 1928 (Krock). If he would have discarded his old petri dishes without looking, this antibiotic may not have been discovered. That is evidence that any day could bring surprise, and, with understanding, people gain experience through mistakes. The speaker in “A Green Crab’s Shell” by Mark Doty has a similar unexpected discovery with a shell. Doty’s use of contrasting diction allows the reader to understand the speaker’s ultimate discovery of inner beauty. Even though the reader has conflicting ideas on the shell’s exterior beauty, the speaker has his moment of realization after flipping over the shell.

The memoir The Red-Headed Hawaiian by Chris McKinney and Rudy Puana, is about life and troubles that Rudy Puana goes through as he grows up. It explains what Rudy does in life to become the man that he is today. In this book, Rudy Puana struggles through so much, but eventually overcomes the pain that he had received.

“My Son the Marine?” is a short story written by Frank Schaeffer and John Schaeffer about a father’s thoughts on his son enlisting in the military. The story starts off as two Marine recruiters visit the narrator’s home in Salisbury, Massachusetts. The narrator’ wife asks the Marine what John will get out of being a Marine. One of the Marine simply replies, “He’ll be United States Marine, ma’am!” Becoming a Marine will not guarantee college funds, signing bonuses, or great civilian opportunities, but it will help John find standards that had not been lowered (paragraph 5). The narrator goes on to describe the background of his family. He was born in Switzerland, he was the youngest of four children, he was home-schooled, and he was later sent to private schools in England and Wales. After contracting polio, the narrator’s parents became very overprotective of him. He married Genie in 1970 and 10 years later they had their youngest child, John.

Animal Dreams, by Barbara Kingsolver, which revolves around reverence for the natural environment, and Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, about the Los Angeles Riots of 1992, by Anna Deavere Smith, present different sides of human behavior. Animal Dreams is a novel about Codi, a woman who returns to her hometown and helps the townsfolk protest peacefully against a mine that damages their water supply. The preservation of nature and the ability to make a difference by protesting peacefully are major themes in the novel. Twilight is a play that consists of edited interview transcripts of various people who observed and experienced the Los Angeles riots of 1992. The riots began in response to the acquittal of a group of white police officers who were videotaped beating Rodney King, an unarmed black man who had been driving under the influence at dangerously high speeds. Violence escalated among the people of Los Angeles until it was declared a disaster area only a few days later. Thousands of businesses were damaged, and dozens of people died. Twilight and Animal Dreams have contrasting major themes when it comes to how people will act in response to having their lives threatened. The people of Twilight and Animal Dreams have similar motives but opposite responses. Twilight shows the brutal nature of humanity when motivated by injustice, while Animal Dreams highlights the peaceful nature of people even when faced with powerful, oppressive institutions.

The Canadian novel ‘Crow Lake’ by Mary Lawson, published in 2002, was awarded in Canada as First Novel Award in the same year it was published and won the McKitterick Prize in 2003. The author Mary Lawson was born and brought up in a small farming community in southern Ontario. After graduating from McGill University, she moved to England in 1968. She still lives there with her husband and sons, though she returns to Canada every year. The story took place in a small town called Crow lake in northern Ontario. In this book Kate Morrison, the main character, leads the reader through her journey for healing from past mistakes dealing with her family. At the beginning, Kate who is seven, and her siblings Luke, Matt, and Bo, experienced a tough time surviving after their parents were killed in a car crash, which impacted them for the rest of their lives.

"Sugar Shack Johnny," as he was known in the pool halls of days gone by, had a rare combination of heart, muscle, and mind. He knew about hard roads and hard rides, and he loved life. Novak was a fearless tush hog. Even more impressively, Sugar Shack would not carry a gun, although many of his enemies did carry guns.

Eggs by Jerry Spinelli is about a nine year old boy named David Limpert, who is a loner. His mother died in an accident when a janitor didn’t put up a wet floor sign. She fell down the stairs head first, and never woke up. Before the accident, David and his mother had made plans to watch the sunrise the next morning, but they never got to do that. David swore that he would never look at the sunrise again. He also swore to never break a rule again.

Once an Eagle by Anton Myrer is a very influential novel in the military. In fact, it is required reading material for all 1st Lieutenants in the Marine Corps as well as in the United States Military Academy at West Point. Many Army leaders have read the book and often discuss it among themselves in social situations. Although a fiction read, many leaders extrapolate the use of mission command as well as the leaderships attributes. In this analysis I will be comparing a single event in the novel to the Army’s leadership principles as well as Mission Command. I will then provide a personal reflection and conclude.

Some believe that birds help express spiritual freedom and psychological liberation with the different colors of birds that are associated with various meanings; specifically the yellow bird means you should keep your guard up. In the novel, The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers, John Bartle becomes guarded and isolated because of his internal battles created by his experiences from war. Bartle struggles with the lack of control he has over the events that happen to him in during his time in the military. He fights with his helplessness when he tries to transition to his lifestyle at home. He also cannot control how he changes as a person. When we think of war we think of the physical damage we see on the exterior but what we cannot see is the psychological damage in the interior of a person.

Throughout many works of literature, characters are described to go through a rite of passage, developing the plot and solving conflicts. A rite of passage is when a character goes through life changes, realizing his/her flaws and maturing as a person. Walter Lee Younger is a man that goes through many different character changes, which cause conflict amongst the other characters. Once he goes through his rite of passage, he is able to fix his flaws and mature. In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, characterization is used to portray that one must experience a rite of passage in order to mature.

The landscape of a post-apocalyptic society contains nothing to live for, it is a world without the people you love, without sun, flowers or food; only lawlessness, fear and uncertainty of survival. McCarthy creates a post apocalyptic world in his book, “The Road,” that addresses the issues of our time by illustrating the fears of society and the violence that accompanies them. These fears at the time were most recently initiated by the attacks of 9/11 and the subsequent Iraq war and the resulting violence experienced both in America and around the world. McCarthy’s “The Road” is a worst-case scenario, in which the broad American view that we are invincible and our principles are infallible is challenged. And with the violence in today’s

The book takes place in the wild west of Wyoming. The character of the Virginian is introduced in Medicine Bow when on business. While in Medicine Bow he plays cards with a cowboy named Trampas. Trampas accuses the Virginian of cheating to which the Virginian pulls out a gun in the effort to stop the accusations. This causes Trampas to develop a hatred for the Virginian and that’s when their rival began. Throughout the book there is conflict between Trampas and the Virginian eventually leading to the Virginian killing due to a threat that Trampas made toward him.

If I had answered this question 16 years ago straight out of college, my response would have been much different than my current answer. Back then, I believed whole-heartedly that criminals should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, with no mercy being shown. Fast-forward, almost two decades and my response today is the exact opposite. In order to reduce recidivism, thus reducing operating expenses in our prisons and jails, we must begin our rehabilitiative efforts with the very young offenders. No one is born with the sole intention of becoming an evil person.
