Kindness is the source of goodness that leads people to true happiness. People help others because it makes them feel good, it changes the life of another person, and it's in people good nature to do so. One good reason people help others is to make them feel good. Like in the story The Scarlet Ibis the brother felt good for helping Doodle. Doodle wasn't able to walk, so that meant that meant that his brother had to take him wherever he wanted to go. The brother didn't like that, so he taught him how to walk. Once he learned his whole family was happy, but the brother felt ashamed for helping him for a different reason. Another reason people help others is that it can change that person life. When the brother was assisting Doodle
At one point in the story, Brother even says to himself, “They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all of their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother,” (pg. 389). This quote shows that he only taught Doodle to walk because he was so afraid of what people would think of him since he had a crippled brother. Even after he had the realization that he was only doing this for himself, he still continued to teach Doodle more physical activities for his own benefit. Later on during the story, Brother says to himself, “Once I had succeeded in teaching Doodle to walk, I began to believe in my on infallibility and I prepared a terrific development program for him, unknown to Mama and Daddy, of course,” (pg. 390). In this quote, Brother describes how he goes on to teach Doodle other activities, but he doesn’t think about how Doodle feels about doing this, he just wants to prove that he can do anything without
The narrator, Brother, tells the story of Doodle, his brother, and his childhood with all his disabilities; starting off by telling about Doodle when he was a baby and toddler, about how he could not do much for himself for a long time, but eventually learns to crawl. He soon moves onto when Doodle got a little older and Brother would have to take him everywhere he went and how the two would take on the mission of teaching Doodle to walk; they spent almost everyday out in the woods making Doodle stronger and stronger. On Doodle’s sixth birthday, they showed the family what he could do;
This causes the Narrator to be embarrassed of his brother and want to fix the issue by pushing him to learn to walk. This shows that he is being selfish because he's fixing an issue that may seem like he's benefiting Doodle, although this is true, he is really doing it for himself. Most people do not do, or try to do selfish things to people they know or love. This shows that the Narrator does not care or love Doodle and think he's annoying. At the end of the Story when Doodle dies, we see that the Narrator is very sad and want Doodle back. So he went from being selfish, using Doodle, and treating him badly to loving him and being mournful.This is clear change in the Narrator, further proving that he is a dynamic
Kindness is the source of goodness that leads people to true happiness. We help others hoping that it changes their life for the better.
Can there be love where there is cruelty? This is the age old question that many books, stories, and movies are based off of, including “The Scarlet Ibis.” In this story, Brother is given a younger brother who was born with a disability. He resents him and teaches him many things out of shame and embarrassment, and one day leaves him in the midst of a storm to die. Though this example seems plagued with cruelty and no love whatsoever, there can be love where there is cruelty. Even though Brother had been cruel to his younger brother, Doodle, for most of his life, there were several times in the story through which Brother shows Doodle love. There are many reasons that there can be love where there is cruelty, including that people can be cruel
Pride, a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements (Google Dictionary). The Scarlet Ibis demonstrates the strength of pride throughout the story. It is written by James Hursts, about two brothers, one whom, “did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death(Hursts 172)”. In short, pride is a marvelous and horrible thing at the same time and can cause happiness or pain. To begin,The Scarlet Ibis is a story that revolves around oneself pride.
Brother decides to help Doodle learn how to walk. He helps him be a “normal brother” by teaching him how to swim, walk, run, and etc. When Doodle dies, Brother shields his body from the rain. He cries when Doodle dies.
At first his brother taught him off of pride, then he changed to teach him for love, but it came back to pride. The narrator’s actions showed that pride can be taken over, but it will eventually come back. The narrator was teaching Doodle to walk because he was embarrased that he couldn’t walk. “ When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who
The Scarlet Ibis Have you ever felt shame for anything- or anyone? Imagine what you would do if all you felt for a close relative was shame. Imagine what you would do if that relative presented a burden for both them and their family, and the only reason to help them was to boost your self-confidence. If you can’t imagine a scenario so void of compassion or love of any kind, if you don’t believe that any story, true or fictional, can possibly exist, than look no further. This is the story of Doodle and his short, horror-ridden life caused by his brother, who is terribly irresponsible, who was constantly a source of cruelty towards Doodle, who wouldn’t even offer a genuine helping hand to Doodle at any point in his life, even at the end, when he needed it most.
In the story there is many elements showing pride and how much has the unknown gone too far with that. The short story has a few characters and the names of the characters are Doodle, Aunt Nicey, and the last one which you don’t know the name of which is called the unknown character in the text. I believe that the narrator is guilty, because in the story there are many emotions shown in such a small and short story. As you read the “Scarlet Ibis” the element pride is everywhere in such a small story, but can also show that the narrator has shown too much pride in himself so he pushed himself and his younger brother named Doodle to try harder into what the unknown character was doing. So is the element of pride shown in the book? There is so
The first story I will be discussing is The Scarlet Ibis. Pride is a major theme throughout the entirety of this story. Pride is a major theme because, pride is what links the two main characters within it together. Brother is embarrassed by his brother Doodle. This theme is created through the story because the narrator feels these emotions towards his little brother Doodle, who has an unknown disability.
Kindness is shown to Doodle in the way of his brother helping him. “There is inside me (and with sadness I have seen it in others) a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love.”(387). "I'm going to teach you to walk, Doodle," I said.(388). The narrator takes Doodle almost everyday and helps him to walk and then he can finally walk even though no one thought he could. Showing kindness to Doodle helped him walk and start to overcome his disabilities.
The short story “The Scarlet Ibis”,by James Hurt is about two brothers, the older one being the narrator and the younger one named Doodle, which is physically disabled. The older brother was thirteen when Doodle was five. Thus, the older brother wasn’t actually old enought to take good care of him yet. Doodle’s older brother took care of him more than his parents did. The film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, by Peter Hedges is also about two brothers, the oldest being Gilbert and the youngest being Arnie, which is mentally disabled. Gilbert took full responsability for Arnie even when he got in trouble.This is because his mother is obese, she is unable to be a mother to Arnie, she can barely walk, and can’t go up the stairs to her room. The older brothers tell their story. They mostly talk about the relationship with their younger brothers, which involved kindness and cruelty. Siblings tend to be harsh and amiable at the same time, in the following paragraphs the kinship among the two brothers in each story will vary.
He knows there are some things that will make him mad along the way but he still tries to not show it. Not everyone would want to help there brother or sister out knowing that they were born with a disability, but Narrator took on that challenge and you have to have courage to do it. Eventually, shortly before his sixth birthday, Doodle learns to walk with help from Brother. Encouraged by this, Brother decides to teach Doodle how to run, climb vines, swim, row and even fight to prepare Doodle for school. Almost a year Doodle had already accomplish so much by a nearing
Can pride lead to death? Often pride walks the thin line between destruction and confidence. However, does that still mean it’ll end with death? In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” the narrator has a physically challenged brother. The brother, named Doodle, was born early and has a weak heart. Despite knowing this, the narrator still pushes Doodle past his limits. Therefore, pride can be destructive. Due to this the narrator ultimately caused Doodle’s death by overworking his system, acting upon the embarrassment of him, and ignoring Doodle’s weak body.
