How Killing Elephants Finances Terror in Africa Bryan Christy, in his August 2015 National Geographic article entitled "How Killing Elephants Finances Terror in Africa" explores how terrorists groups in Africa are funded financially by the illegal sale of ivory, by the slaughter of elephants. Christy questions the idea of using counterfeit elephant tusks with enabled gps - to hunt down the individuals whom kill these elephants, exploring their motives, and to discover the routes taken by them.
Christy goes on to state how the economical downfall of Africa, enabled resources to kill elephants, other countries desire for ivory, and a crippling governement have factored into the circumstances that aggravated this situation. Christy states some 30,000 African elephants are slaughtered every year and emphasizes that the pace of killing is not slowing down. Elephants are not only hunted by terrorist organizations, but poor villagers, unpaid park rangers, and locals due to the influx of moneitary value they can obtain from exploiting the elephants lives. The reason poaching elephants has become so widespread in Africa and surrounding countries is primary due to the low ramifications presented to those who commit such crimes.

Christy writes about the LRA, the Lord's resistant army, lead by Ugandan rebel Joseph Kony. Christy states Kony's mission is to overthrow the Ugandan Government , and to rule the country. Which in turn is Kony's motivation in obtaining ivory, to gain ammunition, to overthrow the Ugandan governement. In turn Kony's militants are alleged to have killed, raped, multilated innocent civillians, and kidnapped young boys to grow their
Over the past 40 years, nearly 52 percent of the world’s wildlife has been wiped out of existence. Africa’s large mammal population, alone, has taken a toll of 59 percent since 1970. A majority of this massive deflation has been caused by the astounding abundance of poaching in these regions. Africa's increasing rates of illegal poaching are a result of humanity’s selfish demand for an individual body part such as tusks, pelts, or bones, which can be sold on the black market for large sums of money. Poaching in Africa is not only illegal, but morally wrong. Efforts to end poaching entirely should be a priority, and with help, it can be stopped.
&An. : Ivory is a very special material used for lots of things, but it comes at the price of hundreds of innocent elephants being killed for a small amount of material, and it’s really affecting the elephant population
Throughout history the most famous poets have devoted their entire lives to literature and in doing so, have become very well known. George Orwell easily became one of the most famous poets of the modern century. Although he did not grow up as an avid writer, he quickly made a name for himself. The officer would write one of a kind stories about his own experiences and the lessons learned from them. Resulting in a great amount of attention and praise for his excellent work. Cindy Johnson, a biographer explains, “He wrote numerous essays and reviews over the years, developing a reputation for producing well-crafted literary criticism.” This obviously meaning that Orwell endured a great deal of criticism in his officer duties as well as in his writings. One of Orwell’s most famous poems is, Shooting An Elephant, in which he explains the messages of the effects of peer pressure, the realization of the importance of experiences long after they have happened, and the disappearance of imperialism.
Some of these factory workers are well aware of their intentions to discriminate, yet choose to be ignorant of their system’s impending product of prejudice. Whether it be pure self-indulgence or just plain avarice, these individuals aspire to push their selfish agenda upon others. In “An Elephant Crackup?” the extent of mindless barbarism against the elephants is recounted, “They’d just throw hand grenades at the elephants, bring whole families down, and cut out the ivory. I call that mass destruction" (Siebert 346). Unfortunately, there will always exist types of individuals who show no regard to life around them. This is a particular instance in which individuals engage in excessive violence merely for the sake of harvesting a resource. In another example of needless cruelty, a belligerent elephant named Topsy would
When Nzou says, “I can’t eat elephant meat; it would be akin to eating a relative’s flesh,” it stresses the amount of respect they have for their animals. But yet, he explains that it doesn’t stop them from being hunted when danger is provoked. Finally, Goodwell Nzou asserts that Americans have no right in feeling bad for Cecil, when Zimbabweans are seen as prey to lions as
Trophy hunting is a wildly controversial topic, especially in today’s social media driven world. Every time a new picture of a hunter and a dead lion or other animal is posted online the media goes crazy. Africa is known for it’s beautiful landscapes, and more importantly the exotic highly sought after animals that roam the land. Africa’s most prominent animals are known as the “big five” it consists of the most challenging and rewarding animals to hunt. The big five consists of: lions, elephants, white rhinoceros, leopards, and finally the buffalo. The big five are majestic and extremely dangerous creatures, therefore they are highly sought after by mainly wealthy white males from all over the world as trophy hunts. Locals to Africa see the animals as threats to their way of life, America see’s them as exotic creatures that need to be protected, and trophy hunters see them as a challenge and another check on the list. The two perspectives I am going to look at about this controversial topic is from a social construction perspective and a political economy perspective.
The Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency is an ongoing guerrilla campaign that started in 1987. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group was led by Joseph Kony. Kony proclaims himself as the “spokesperson” of god. His objective is to overthrow the Ugandan government, establishing a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and Acholi tradition.
This is an excerpt from a 20-page paper on “Africa Command and the War on Terror.”
21) It is Amazing in a dismal way the number of elephants being killed in only the past decade. Similarly in “Can She Be Saved”, Justin O’neill, Astoundingly states that “according to some estimates, poachers
The people responsible for killing the elephants throughout the time period of 1800’s -1999 is all local hunters and big game hunters. Roberts seen a group of boys torturing an innocent baby elephant who he then took back to his plane and tried to nurse it back to health but alas the baby elephant died after being Robert's care for ten days ( Hammer, Joshua.). A group of boys from some village seen that a little elephant was wandering out alone so they decided to mess with the little guy well when roberts seen this he decided that that wasn’t going work for him at all and decided to rescue the innocent baby elephant. Some of the elephants that get poached are in retaliation because they were getting all over a farmer’s crops so the farmer took it upon himself to kill the elephant that didn’t know any different not to go in that area.( The reason the elephants don’t know any different is because their land that they onced roamed freely just started being taken over by the human population. Now we are going to talk about the people responsible for killing elephants from the time period of 2000’s and above. Most of the human hunters nowadays have heavy machinery that can take down elephants like ak 47’s and other machinery such as that. With their big guns elephants don’t really stand a chance against human hunters. They also use a gps/sonar mapping to see where the elephants are located. Then they go and kill them and that is also how they find them so easily in big hordes as they do.
The Lord’s Resistance Army, or the LRA, is Africa’s most violent armed group and also the oldest. Joseph Kony formed the LRA in 1986 in northern Uganda, to fight against the Ugandan Government. At the height of the conflict, about two million people were displaced in northern Uganda. Since the LRA never gained public support, they turned to forcible recruitment to build up their army (“The Lord’s Resistance Army”). Kony, and the LRA believe that Uganda should be governed and run based on the 10 Commandments. They rely on the application of terror in order to keep their campaign alive. The war in Uganda being
Animal poaching has a bigger price tag than the trophy sitting on the shelf. Poaching is causing iconic animals of many continents and of our oceans to become endangered or even extinct. These animals that people have come to love and fantasize over may be gone before we are (Africa). Elephants, rhinos, lions, and zebras are the animals thought of the most when it comes to animal poaching, but many animals are poached. They are killed for only one quality, like their horns or skins and the rest of the animal is left behind. Poaching is a massive business that is ran by international networks, it’s estimated to make hundreds of millions of dollars (World). Not all wildlife trade is illegal, but it becomes a crisis when an increasing amount of illegal poaching is done and it directly threatens the survival of species in the wild (World). Since 1960 97.6% of the Black Rhino population in Africa has been poached and lions are extinct in seven African countries (Africa).
There are organizations around the globe designed to stop elephant poaching. Their intent is to sway people’s opinions to help with the world-wide problem. Only a global ban on the sale of ivory would take the heat off of these massive creatures. Solutions might include, addressing the involvement of international criminal institutes by means of strong law enforcement at both national and international levels along the full extent of the supply. Closing down domestic (national) markets in ivory, would also be beneficial. Countries could embrace the trade ban, and educate consumers in order to stem the demand for ivory (Bloody Ivory; January 11, 2013).
Do you know what the biggest animal alive today is? That would the the elephant. Elephants are amazing creatures with many different features. They are the most intelligent species alive and despite their large ears, they do not have the best hearing. However, they are fading away due to poaching. The definition of poaching is to illegally trespass on someone’s property to hunt or kill animals. Still, why do people hunt elephants? Some hunters believe it is sacred to kill and poach elephants for sacrifices for gods or goddesses for a specific religion. Others believe that they are nasty blights, or an infection, therefore they must be killed to cleanse the land. However, hunters primarily poach elephants for their ivory that is located in the elephant's tusks. Tusks are continuously growing front teeth that are crucial for elephants’ survival. Elephants use their tusks for a mixture of functions. For the majority of the time, elephants use them for defensive tasks such as protecting
Poaching is a war, and many animals lose their lives and family to it. Although many people don't think it's bad, it is. Many animals have gone extinct from it. People in the world need to stop poaching otherwise we won't have elephants, tigers, rhinos or any other animals anymore. People really don't care, but if we don't stop poaching we won't have any of these animals. Elephants tusks are used for piano keys, billiards balls and many other human enjoyments.
