Do you want to have more fun at school? Improve kids social and even physical skills? I hope you said yes! We need longer recess because it burns energy so they less hiper during class, cuts down on obesity, better classroom behavior. Recess should be longer.
First of all longer recess with cut down on obesity. It gives kids exercise that they don't get out of school. Some people think that there would be less class time and less time to learn. There would be less class time but, more homework that means more responsibility.
Second it burns more energy for better classroom behavior. They run around at recess so they are less active during class time. Some people think that it would just make kids not want to do work and tired. It would just
Later start times, schools all over the states have been going back and forth between should schools have earlier start times or not. But schools shouldn't start later because it's dangerous and costs money. Schools shouldn't have late start times because it's dangerous and costs money against the school districts.
There is evidence that having recess can ruin kids self esteem, or they can be humiliated because if they go to play a team sport, they may be the last to be picked (Strong). No one likes being the last one picked for a team. Without recess, students will not have to go through that feeling of being rejected, not good enough to play, or not in physical shape for the game. Other studies have shown that some kids do not use recess to it's real purpose. Students will just sit there, talk and socialize with their friends instead of move around and be active (PRO/CON:
In the text it says, “When kids get breaks, they are more able to learn.” ( McCarthy,1) Even though not having recess would give schools more time to teach their kids, the kids will not learn as much because they will not be focused on learning because their brains are tired. To add on , the article also says, “Though play at recess, kids learn communication skills such as negotiation, cooperation, sharing and problem solving” (McCarthy,1) By learning skills that you do on the playground, it helps you make better decisions in class which can also help you learn more. Finally, the text states, “Play also gives kids opportunities to practice coping ski, such as perseverance and self control.” (McCarthy, 1) If kids get to have recess, they will learn important skills that let them learn how to push themselves to do better which can help them learn and/or do good on
If you had the opportunity to change one school rule, which one would it be? Most kids don’t like school rules. They want to carry their cellphones with them, and be able to have sugary snacks and drinks, etc. However, of all these rules, there is one rule that I think would be most beneficial to students and teachers if it were changed: Having recess. Currently, most middle schools do not provide a recess time at all, and this includes our middle school. Having recess would benefit our students and school environment for many reasons. If middle schoolers were provided just 30 minutes of recess every day, their bodies would be healthier, their mood would be better, and their minds would have a better ability to focus and concentrate on their school work as well.
One of the reasons I think adding an hour and thirty minutes to a school day is a bad idea is because it would cost the county more money to run a school. The county has to pay for the electricity used to keep the lights on for an extra hour and a half, plus they have to pay for plumbing, air conditioning and other utilities. In addition, Chesterfield County Public Schools, CCPS, will have to pay more money to it’s 7119 staff because they will have to work
This statistic displays the recommended amount of physical activity for kids. As time passes and kids grow older with more things to do, such as extracurriculars or after-school classes, recess can help children get their daily exercise in their jam-packed schedule. By adding recess to school, kids are actively exercising and improving their well-being. Another reason why middle schools should have recess is that after many elementary schools have brought it back into multiple breaks, teachers have noticed that kids are more focused, and are not as distracted as they were before. Christopher Connelly, the author of “Turns Out Monkey Bars And Kickball Might Be Good For The Brain” from the January 2016 issue of NPR, writes about the health benefits of recess.
My first reason students should have recess is because students spend too much time with their nose in a computer, and this can be bad for your eyes. Some of today's kids probably can’t tell the difference between a ladybug and a rolly polly. Kids need to learn how to have fun outside and not on a computer.
In the article Recess Makes Kids Smarter, it makes a case for why recess is necessary in elementary schools. It starts off talking about Nelly Torres, who is a parent at Chicago Public Schools, and how her first and fourth grader didn’t have recess until last year and even now it is only a 10 minute brake once a day. The cut back on recess was brought upon with the No Child Left Behind movement outing pressure in the school work and good scores. This made recess seem like a waste of time that could be used to improve scores. A few things are starting to support bringing recess back with the high childhood obesity rate and The First Lady talking so much about children’s exercise. The NASPE says that the children should get at least 20 minutes of recess per day.
This gives students the opportunities to do what they enjoy. Also, recess is also something we should have. Recess would kids a break and let them get that energy out. Last, are classes should be shorter. Shorter classes can help kids stay focused more and can give them a better learning experience.
The first reason why kids need recess is they will be more focused and less fidgety. A no recess school was studied by a doctor from Georgia State University’s Department of Early Childhood Education, Doctor Olga Jarret, to see if giving the kids recess would affect their behavior. 60% of the children, including 5 special needs kids, proved that recess gave them more focus and they were less fidgety, or moving a lot, on the day they knew they had recess. Kids build up energy throughout the school day leading them to lose focus, fidgety, and lose focus. Giving the kids recess releases some of their energy, giving them enough to focus for the rest of the day. Letting them have recess not only releases energy, but feeds the brain for more focus.
It's been argued that schools should not have recess because it gives more time to learn. On a website called Focus on the Family it's been said that without recess students have more time to learn, and come home with less homework than previous years.
Shirley Turner, the New Jersey state senator, states that,”They have just ignored or neglected the fact that kids need more that just the “3Rs” They need the “4Rs”- they need recess as well.” Many years ago, as far back as 1884, people argued about recess. But, many people believed that kids should not have recess because they need to be more focused on schoolwork. Recess should be in schools because it helps get all the energy out of kids and helps kids with ADHD. Kids that have ADHD should have recess.
The first reason why there should be a scheduled time for recess is because lots of kids have a lot of energy and are very loud and disruptive in class. Recess would help them to get their energy out and to pay attention in class. Also, it would help them to be in better shape and not be full of energy all of the time. Almost any teacher has students that disrupt their class on a daily basis and having a recess could help with that. Also kids would probably be happier if they got to go
Do you remember those years of youth when you sat in your seat and waiting for the recess bell to ring? Remember the excitement you experienced just at the thought of recess? If you can't remember, then you should take the time to think about it and remember that feeling. Recess has many benefits to people. Recess and breaks can relieve people of stress, help develop social skills, and people can learn more efficiently.
For instance, after 15 minutes of running around it is hard to get kids to calm down, so imagine trying to get a class of kindergarteners to calm down after 30 minutes of chasing one another around, it would take even more time out of our school day. Also, if recess was longer kids would spend more time thinking about what to do at recess. They would spend the day thinking, play tag or soccer? Swing or do gymnastics? Addition, with their minds elsewhere, they wouldn’t pay attention in class. The teacher would be talking, but all the while, kids would be debating up in the clouds who to play with, what do, and who to avoid.. They would get behind in class and the teacher wouldn’t recognize that it was just from their students lack of effort. “I disprove of recess in every way shape and form. My students heads fly up to the clouds and don’t come down again until they hear the dismissal bell.”
