Katniss Everdeen: A Dystopian Novel

The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, is an adventure fiction novel filled with adventures and trials that will lead you to into the near distant future. In a place that was once known as United States of America, is now known as Panem, which is divided up in to twelve cruel districts. Forced by the nation’s capitol, one boy and one girl shall be chosen randomly to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Hunger Games, also known as the deathly journey when put in to an unknown place and requires you to fight until you are the last one standing. This may be seen as an enjoyable entertainment to those residing in the nations capitol; but to Katniss Everdeen, a courageous teenager, it is a death sentence that cannot be avoided.

In the novel, The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins is a dystopian young adult book that is based in Panem that is divided into twelve districts. Each year the districts have to send a boy and a girl into an arena to fight to the death. The novel’s protagonist is Katniss, who lives in the poorest district. Katniss makes the audience think of the important ideas of bravery, societal class and love.

“We had to save you because you're the Mockingjay, Katniss, says Plutarch. While you live, the revolution lives” (Collins). Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.

The book that I have been reading is “Mocking Jay” By: (Suzanne Collins) and it’s about how a girl named Katniss Everdeen fights against the capital after she finds out what they are doing to all the districts and if you do not understand what the districts are well there a big group it feels like to me that it’s more like a tribe but it’s not, and they all go into what is called the Hunger Games and they pick one girl and one boy from each district and there are only 12 districts and in the 75 Hunger Games Katniss goes back as well as Peta and later on into the hunger games Katniss shoots an arrow will and a wire rapped around it at the force field which made It blow up and then Finick the game maker tells Katniss that there is a District 13 and she did not know about it until then and then starts “The Mocking Jay” (Suzanne

The Hunger Games, a novel by Suzanne Collins, is the story of 16 years old, Katniss Everdeen, who fights to death for her district. The Hunger Games is an event hosted every year by the Capitol of Panem, where a randomly chosen boy and girl both need to represent each of the twelve districts that the capitol is composed of. When Katniss little sister, Prim, is chosen to be the representative for District twelve, Katniss volunteers to take her place and fight along her male counterpart, Peeta. The reason I choose this book for my book report is because Katniss is not your typical 16 year old girl. Not only is she her family’s provider but she’s also skillful, strong, rebellious, and unsentimental heroine. These are characteristics that society would mostly link to a 16 year old boy rather than a girl.

A sixteen year old girl who has been reaped for the purpose of fighting against her fellow ‘tributes’ in a game show put on for the people of Panem. In The Hunger Games society, the higher class people live in the Capitol and wear eccentric costumes, while the rest of the population is diminished to animalistic Districts whose sole purposes are to supply the Capital. The people of the Districts are taken for granted and treated like animals by the Capital, until they are brought to the public eye by being reaped. Once in the Games, Katniss fights not only the other tributes but herself and her government system. “’Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!’” (Collins 19). This is the line in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins that is most memorable. The Hunger Games is about a girl named Katniss Everdeen in post apocalyptic North America called Panem. It is broken up into 12 districts each district getting more impoverish the higher the number. Here we find Katniss in 12, they are ruled by the capitol and its president Snow. This society keeps peace by having a drawing in each district for tributes a male and female from the ages of twelve to eighteen. The tributes which Katniss is one, are then put in an arena and they fight to the death for all to see on tv, until only one is left alive. An analysis of Katniss will be done by her character and how it is shown in the book through her loyalty, anger, and stoic personality.

This book shows the life of Katniss Everdeen after winning the Hunger Games an event that is sponsored by the Capital, where children are put into an arena to fight and kill each other to survive, and how her life was affected while in the games and after as well. She also has to relive the horrors of the games because her and Peeta Mellark fellow winner of the games have to go on the Victory Tour around all the districts so the Capitol can keep the terror of the games alive. Then later it is announced that, “‘on the seventy-fifth anniversary… the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors’”(Collins 175) which meant that Katniss and Peeta along with the other victors would have to go back into the Hunger Games again and fight to win. The book is set in a futuristic place called Panem. Which according the website Shmoop.com Panem is “...a country that - after a series of vague disasters - rose from the ashes of North America… [and] it’s all pretty post-apocalyptic”(Shmoop Editorial Team) where people are put into different districts. While the more wealth people get to live in the Capitol where they do not worry about starvation and everything else that the people in the districts go

In the Hunger games, Katniss Everdeen must journey alongside Peeta Mellark in an arena where they must fight till death with 11 other districts till 1 remains, while also weighing survival and love. As we follow Katniss’s journey, we see how she has proven her way to be a traditional hero. Katniss's "Call to adventure" comes with the start of the 74th annual Hunger Games. Katniss and her sister prim rose make their way to the "reaping" where 1 girl and 1 boy are chosen to compete. As they anxiously wait, Prim rose is drawn for district 12. Katniss can’t bare to see her sister face such a grim fate, Katniss automatically volunteers to take her place in the games, district 12’s very first volunteer as tribute. Peeta Mellark, is called as district 12’s male tribute, Katniss remembers the first time she saw him after her father's death, peeta gave her bread that was well needed.

In Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, a novel set in Panem--a dystopian country that was originally North America before the outset of natural disasters, storms, fires, encroaching seas and war--follows the first person point of view of Katniss Everdeen (Collins 18). The totalitarian government, usually referred as the Capitol, subjects all of the twelve districts to select two male and female teenagers to participate in the Hunger Games, where the twenty-four tributes fight to the death in a gladiator style that is used to entertain the Capitol’s audience while reaffirming their dominance over the districts. Once Katniss’ sister, Prim, is randomly selected for the Games, Katniss quickly volunteers to take her place and she departs for the Capitol with the other tribute, Peeta Mellark. During Katniss’ time in the arena, she is forced to adapt to her horrid situation and recognize her genuine identity as she balances survival against humanity. As the story of Katniss develops throughout The Hunger Games, she is forced to acknowledge her authentic identity as she diverges from her initial preconception of her identity as she survives the new environment.
