Ka loko o Kiholo is known for its beautiful bay and camping sites although most are unaware of an ancient pond created by King Kamehameha himself. This ancient fishpond continues to stand today although its health has diminished over the years. As of 2012 conservation efforts have been made by volunteers, the Nature Conservancy, TNC, and Hui Aloha Kiholo. Currently, conservationists work to improve water quality, reduce sediments created by invasive plants, and in turn, allow native species to thrive. With these efforts, the ponds ecosystem has begun to restore itself as fish populations begin to thrive one again. As a running start student with Palamanui I learned of these efforts and joined the crew to give back to the land.
Helping to restore this pond humbled me and made me reflect on myself and my community. The efforts made by all participants was wonderful to me, each had showed up to work with pure intentions. This project is meaningful to me because it reflects strong Hawaiian values and preserves a part of Hawaii's history. With each of our efforts, we fought to restore a piece of history by giving back to the land and creating a better environment.

I have now become more aware of my actions and am currently President of my school's Go Green Club. I have now become environmentally conscious of my habits and work towards spreading this. This experience has helped me realize how important it is to give back to the community and take care of the land. My career goal is to help others although my life goal is to become involved in more activities that strengthen me as an individual such as this experience
On October 6th 2015, the students of Mattawan’s AP Environmental class took a trip to the local stream of the Mattawan Consolidated Schools area. The purpose of this trip was to conduct a stream study to determine the health, conditions, and pollution levels of this small body of water. A multitude of factors came into play when making a judgement on the stream’s health, and making sure to take all of these essential points was crucial to the study. A variety of thorough experiments were conducted to help make this overlying conclusion, as many students adopted many roles in the study. Students used a physical survey form, water test data sheet, and taxa recording sheet to record their findings. Teamwork was essential in making sure all of this information could be found accurately and efficiently. The combination of all of the final results allowed the class to make a judgement of the stream’s state.
In the late 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A) explored ways of ensuring that Kepone did not affect the river’s ecosystem. Ranging from covering the most seriously polluted sections of the river bottom with concrete to massive dredging, each strategy was
These great sceneries have the power to inspire a great many of people to conserve and protect the natural environment that Florida has to offer. These trees and waterways have a great potential, in that they have the ability to inspire the next generation of scientists and policy writers, simply because they enjoyed walking through the park during their childhoods. This is extremely important, as ecology directly involves how people interact with their environment based off of the knowledge and respect they have for it.
The 100,000 acres of watershed protected by the Ko’olau Mountains Watershed Partnership serve as an invaluable resource. Without the support of the Partnership, this amazing natural resource could be in imminent danger from a variety of threats. Conserving our forests enables us to preserve the water supply that we depend on, so actively working to sustain that supply by protecting the forests is in the best interest of everyone who resides in or visits this paradise on earth. Through the efforts of the Ko’olau Mountains Watershed Partnership, we are able to maintain the delicate balance needed to ensure the longevity of the watershed of the Ko’olau Mountains.
Every summer for the past few years, I have been constantly on the gorgeous glittering waters of Lake Allatoona. I have experienced everything from boating to tubing and even jumping off of double decker docks. It’s hard to say goodbye to the waters for another year until Memorial Day. Even though I only see a small but beautiful portion of Lake Allatoona, the “Tri-State Water Wars” are still a large problem for this blossoming community surrounding Lake Allatoona.
The writer introduced us to Bill Martin, the president of Blue Ridge Aquaculture, located in Virginia. His company owns the largest indoor aquacultural farm in the world. Martin has over twelve thousand pounds of tilapia, a common freshwater fish largely enjoyed in America by seafood lovers everywhere. Using this indoor fish farming company as an example, the writer describes how Martin keeps the water the fish live in clean and healthy. Blue Ridge Aquaculture has a massive water treatment system that pumps half a million gallons of water from their own, personal underground aquifer. Powered by a large supply of coal, eighty-five percent of the water fish swim in is rotated throughout the treatment system, while the rest is sent to a local sewage plant, soon after proceeding to the nearest landfill. When interviewed, Bill Martin states that his fish are “happy” living in his company’s indoor fish tank. One may interpret a fish’s feelings by how healthy it is. A dead fish is clearly unhappy, while a live one is. Martin tops it all off by saying he hasn’t had a single tank of tilapia completely die out yet. By looking at Martin’s dialogue, anyone can see that he is proud of his company, and believes it to be the best aquacultural farm ever. Take in mind that indoor fish tanks have no waste impact on the oceans since it is a one hundred percent controlled faculty. However, in order to obtain a large enough area to create an indoor tank used for holding a very substantial amount of fish, the company has to mow down the natural landmarks and terrain around that place. For example, thousands tropical mangroves were bulldozed over to support the aquacultural evolution in the 1980’s, resulting in colossal habitat destruction. It is equally important to know that just because the fish aren’t dying in their tanks doesn’t mean they live in the best environment. Indoor
The Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium Restoration project, it is one restoration project of many in the state of North Carolina that make up the North Carolina coastal restoration project responsible for the restoration of the 301 miles that make up the North Carolina coastlines. I have chosen this particular project because it is close to me; I worked an internship for my high school senior research project at the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and worked closely with the rehabilitation of the endangered Loggerhead sea turtle. This ecosystem needed to be restored because of the effects of the Hurricane Irene in 2011, and the Longshore current. This current is responsible for eroding the coastline, moving north to south in a quick process that migrates inlets
The Klamath Lake, along with other various rivers, lakes and canals that surround it, are the basis for almost 500 species of wildlife in southern Oregon and parts of northern California. It also serves as the most important factor in a farmer’s livelihood; their irrigation. The basis for the water crisis that is going to today in this region is that the current water levels and somewhat water quality are diminishing and reeking havoc on the area’s
In this paper I will conduct research on the Bolsa Chica Wetlands that are located in an area of lowlands in Orange County California, adjacent to the city of Huntington Beach. The area is managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), whose mission is to” protect and enhance; migratory shorebird, seabird, waterfowl overwintering habitat; protect natural habitat for shorebirds and seabirds; protect nesting and foraging conditions for threatened or endangered species” The Bolsa Chica Conservancy (BCC) is a local volunteer organization that assists in maintaining the area. Its goals are to ensure the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of the area (2010). This
2006- Joining Focus children organization – This was the first nonprofit organization that I ever joined. It dealt with handicap kids in developing countries. I believe that I became sensitive to co-cultures that exist in our world. It made me realize how hard it is for others to try and live and adapt to the dominant culture.
First, Daniel Weintraub in the article “River Restoration Project”, states that the project will be beneficial for the fish and the people.Weintraub supports his point by quoting a source, they say that everyone involved won't be left out. The authors purpose is to inform people about how helpful the project is so that they would support the project. The author writes in an informative tone for people
Growing up in one of the most biologically diverse estuaries in North America impacted my perception on nature from my first thought until now as a young adult. If you are from the south most people get a glimpse of how pretty Florida is but unless you fish, very few people get to check out the Indian River Lagoon. This massive body of water stretches whopping 156 miles and surprisingly takes up over 30% of Florida’s east coast. Here the Atlantic collides with fresh water and creates an epic battling ground for fisherman and a lovely home for more than 2000 animal species (SJWM). I fortunately have had access to this wonderful estuary thanks to my grandparents. They moved into the developing town of satellite beach early on and bought property
By utilizing on its business plan a background of photographs showing pristine water and healthy vibrant corals it epitomizes pathos. This is described by Carabelli in Rhetoric Matters, "[When] used correctly, pathos can make a bland argument come alive for the audience." (87). This approach takes an otherwise dry business writing and brings it to life. For further enhancement it shows swimming fish in the distance on both of the portraits. This providing for a connection of corals to being a habitat, similar to how plants relate on the surface. The use of many smaller photographs show the broad reach of the program and its scope of operations. In one of the smaller images a person is actively engaged, thereby allowing the audience to visualize themselves being involved. Another shows an aerial view of a fresh water source that serves to further enhance the personal connection by linking coral reefs to the populations freshwater system. Using the NOAA and Department of Commerce emblems ensures placement of references to their supporting partners. The inclusion of a date range identifies that this is an ongoing initiative. In a clever synopsis of vision, credibility, and beauty, this image embraces kairos by calling the reader to action (Carabelli,
Giving detailed instruction on how to paint the scenery of a pond, the speaker slowly comes to the realization that it will be challenging for the artist to complete his task and capture the heart and significance of the scenery. He knows that in order to paint
Today I’m going to write about a piece of the Manistee River that’s near and dear to me. It’s a small plot of land just south of the 45th parallel. The area is Springfield Township in Fife Lake Michigan. This is now my father’s final resting place, which is fitting because it was his favorite place to sit and ponder life. The beauty and tranquility are breathtaking, however, due to human interaction, it’s begun to lack what it once had. In 1977 the graduating class of high schoolers decided to alter the area forever. They
