It is sad and depressing to hear when teenagers are involved in deplorable behavior and youth crimes are increasing worldwide. When a juvenile or youth is arrested under crimes such as a theft, murder, rape, DUI, drug possession, the hearings are conducted in a separate Juvenile Court that may charge them of serious penalties like fines, house arrest, jail, community service, a criminal record, probation, psychiatric evaluations, drug testing and treatment or counseling. Since a juvenile crime can have far reaching effect on his future, the court does not conduct a jury trial but exercises discretionary powers which most likely lead to some sort of rehabilitation only. To determine such cases, age, mental and physical maturity, history of criminal record of juvenile at time of crime and damages suffered by the accused play a very important role. There are a couple of different theory on how and why the juvenile court developed. Anthony Platt argues that the Chicago court was created to control the increasing number of poor and the large groups of immigrants that were coming into the city by the middle and upper classes. Placing a juvenile in a detention center early in the court process increases the risk that youths will be found to be delinquent and damage their prospects for future success. A majority of the youths that are placed in these facilities pose little or no threat to the public and essentially do not need to be there. This portion of the juvenile court process is detrimental to the future and mental aspects of a youth’s life. We desperately need to change the way that we handle the juvenile court system because we are only reinforcing the delinquent behavior that these youths have been exposed to. We need to focus on the rehabilitation and prevention efforts for these youths not the punishment aspect and until then (insert a better ending).

Millions of juveniles are processed through the juvenile court system, and the number has been growing for years. Judges and court officials have been looking for many ways to come up with alternatives to incarceration. There are several different alternatives to incarceration for juveniles currently that will be discussed. Incarceration has an impact on the society as well, even for those who have not been in trouble with the law before which is one of the reasons why alternatives have been evolved. Tensions between the established principals and the proposed methods determined the way in which early incarceration alternatives were introduced into legislation.

What is juvenile crime? Juvenile crime or juvenile delinquency is when a crime is committed when the person in question is a minor, or under the legal age of 18. In order to address this question we must look at the history and what lead to the creation of a juvenile system. To answer the main question, two other questions need to be answered; how is the Juvenile court system different than the adult system and what is the classification of a juvenile?

The juvenile justice system is similar to the criminal justice system. This system is where juveniles are processed, and may be arrested after referrals for juvenile delinquency. Juvenile justice is very different in every state and can be very similar as well because every system has limited jurisdiction and that most focus on the offenders and not their offenses. Therefore, there are 51 juvenile justice systems in the United States. The United States has the juvenile justice system because children are very different than adults – in that they can be better receptive for change and also being easier to rehabilitate. Moreover, the main goal of the juvenile justice system is rehabilitation (Juvenile Law Center). The juvenile justice system is made up of police, courts, corrections, probation and parole services, as well as community-based programs to name a few (book).

The juvenile court is different from the adult court in that juveniles are not adjudicated guilty. THe thought that the female juvenile can use her experiences as manipulation in a court that is meant to evaluate why juveniles are displaying behavior is sexist. Male juveniles experiences are treated as facts that show risk factors, and the female juveniles experiences should be treated
