Justice is defined as being fair, right, or lawful. To determine if an action is just, the question “was it morally right or wrong” must be answered. In law today, justice is determined through written rules or laws. Similarly, the novel Romeo and Juliet uses the idea of justice, for two lovers have families are at war, which creates great tension throughout the families. The two families, the Montagues and the Capulets often begin riots throughout the streets of Verona, which causes many complications for Romeo and Juliet, as well as challenges the idea of justice. In the novel Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, justice was not achieved through the Prince’s ruling. For justice to be achieved, every person in the dispute must …show more content…
Romeo had announced that he did not wish to take part in the fight. It may have looked as though he was part of the fight, but he only fought Tybalt to defend himself and his friends. Furthermore, Romeo was punished even though he was just protecting himself. Not only that, Romeo also tried to stop Mercutio and Tybalt from fighting many times throughout the scene. These actions Romeo completed makes the Prince’s decision unjust, for Romeo was doing the correct thing for himself and the others around him, making him innocent. Throughout act three scene one of Romeo and Juliet, many actions were made that confirm the decisions made by the Prince did not achieve justice. However, the question is, can justice really be achieved? As mentioned above, justice is equality, but there is no way for something to be perfectly equal. In society today, cases are known to have achieved justice, or not achieved justice, yet there are so many pieces to a conflict that are able turn around the conclusion of the conflict. At this time in society there is no single thing that is absolutely equal, and if justice can be defined as equal, can justice really be
In the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, we learn of the many hardships and highs Romeo and Juliet go through over the course of the story. The play Romeo and Juliet is based off two star-crossed lovers who are separated from each other due to a feud between their two families. Their love is so strong that at the end of the story Romeo and Juliet both end up committing suicide because they can’t live without each other. Whether it is problems with love, or them complimenting each other on how they feel about the other person, Shakespeare uses many literary devices to make the reader dig deeper into the context to find the meaning behind the sentence. Some of the literary devices are; similes, metaphors, and personification.
Romeo doesn’t deserve to be hurt or punished because he was defending his honor. Romeo tried to stop from fighting Tybalt using his words saying, “I do protest I never injured thee, But love thee better than thou canst devise III. i. ll 39-40.” But Tybalt didn’t listen he kept quarreling with Romeo. He also tried to stop the fighting between Mercutio and Tybalt.
In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the banishment of Romeo from the city of Verona is unjust because the Capulets were acquitted from any variety of punishment. During the play Romeo, a Montague, is to be banished due to the deaths of both Mercutio and Tybalt. Although the Capulets’ have lost Tybalt, the Montagues’ have lost their friend, Mercutio. The Montagues’, however, must also suffer through Romeo’s banishment. In the opening conflict of Romeo and Juliet the prince states, “If ever you disturb our streets again,/ Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace” (I.i.98-99). This statement provides evidence of the Prince being unequal to the two households because he’s being inconsiderate of the other side's argument. Although Romeo
I see thou knowest me not.” Tybalt responds by saying “Boy this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me, therefore turn and draw.” That proves that Tybalt went to kill Romeo and clearly, Romeo, was not looking for a fight. Even after Romeo let Tybalt hit him, when Mercutio protected Romeo, Tybalt killed Mercutio, this was what made Romeo end Tybalt’s life. This is where Tybalt’s fault increases, stated in Act 3 Scene 1 by the prince “And for that offense, we banish him immediately.”
Tybalt did end up killing the innocent Mercutio. This is where Romeo is at fault. When Tybalt comes back to where Romeo sits with Mercutio’s dead body, he has no clue what Romeo is about to do to him. Romeo, out of anger from the death of his best friend, he takes out his sword and starts to duel Tybalt. Romeo does end up winning the duel and kills Tybalt, which is just another act of
The Capulet's and Montague's should be punished because the family feud was very old and it should've been ended, they have gotten plenty of people killed, and they are also the reason romeo and Juliet have committed suicide. The 2 families are the reasons of the conflicts that has been happening. If they would've ended the feud their children would've been alive and happy and so will have the other who have gotten killed. Their actions have cost a-lot of blood on their hands. Romeo and Juliet were madly in-love but they are also madly depressed. They could not tell their families about one another because they were afraid of what might happened. If they're families would have ended the feud Romeo and Juliet would have been happily together and in-love they could've lived a long life with their future children. The Capulet's and Montague's have cost so much not only to others but to themselves. They can not blame anybody for what they have caused.
The opinions of others do NOT affect Romeo and Juliet’s choices and destiny, rather it is the young couple's own choices and decisions that led to their terrible ending. Tybalt saw Romeo at the party that was a Capulet only party, and wanted to fight him. However, now that Romeo and Juliet are married, he does not want to fight Tybalt since he is technically his cousin-in-law now. He also doesn’t want to fight someone who is so close to Juliet. Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt, this leads to Mercutio getting involved between Tybalt and Romeo.
Friar Lawrence says,“Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast”( Romeo and Juliet 2.3.94). If some characters had followed this advice they wouldn’t be to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Some should be pardoned while others should be punished.
‘’For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo’’ – William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are star crossed lovers and their lives are cut short by death. Are family wishes hazardous, or is it deadly to have flaws? Is the victim at fault here? In the play, Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare provides several of actions and influences that caused Juliet’s tragedy. The death of Juliet can be blamed on multiple factors. It is clear that she is partially to blame because of her personality flaw but also external forces such as family expectations played a role in her death.
There are many reasons people have of what caused Romeo and Juliet’s death, but which reason is the best? Romeo and Juliet have a forbidden love that is traced by the feud between their families. There is no way to escape the fact that their families despise each other. Romeo and Juliet have a love for each other that no one can explain. They loved each other since first sight, and they would rather die than not be together. There are many good opinions about why Romeo and Juliet died, but which explains the whole story and not part of it? Is it fate? Their decisions? The family’s fault? Is is the natural flaws each character has? Not one person is to blame for this tragedy, but everyone is. Everyone that was involved
At the end of Romeo and Juliet, the Prince declares that "Some shall be pardoned and some punished." I believe that there are many persons responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, but ultimately it’s the parents of Romeo and Juliet that are the most at fault for the outcome of the play. The Capulets and the Montagues are in a long-standing feud. They hate each other. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet and because of the hate, they cannot get married. Romeo and Juliet get advice from Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence is also responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he secretly married them. Romeo tells Friar Laurence that he loves Juliet and he wants to marry her. Friar Laurence tells Romeo that it is probably
Society is cruel and unforgiving, it has strict unbendable rules and deadly consequences. It determines your worth and your future. In the sinister society of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, two star crossed lovers fall victim to the unforgiving hunger for violence and injustice in their world. The lovers’ attempts at being together are cruelly thwarted by their society and its fixation on honor and disgrace, poverty-creating laws and, obligatory social classes. Society's focus on honor and disgrace is accountable for the continuation of the Montague and Capulet’s “ancient grudge.”
Fate is the concept of predetermined events and timing, a key influence from this idea, is what causes multiple situations to erupt in a plot. The sequence of events that is instigated by time can be arranged countless of ways, and each order provides a different ending to the storyline. Time is a primary component to a number of stories, especially in Shakespeare’s acclaimed play, Romeo and Juliet, where a destined couple is brought together and torn apart by unavoidable circumstances. In the tragedy Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare alludes to the inevitable, tragic fate of the star-crossed lovers through the consequences of precise timing and unfortunate, chance encounters during the drama. Consequently to the impeccable timing of events
Fate has always been in the universe and can be seen throughout history. It is basically another word for the plan God has for the world and everyone on it. Romeo and Juliet experienced a lot in their journey and if you look closely it is pretty easy to see fate working in them. In Shakespeare’s version of Romeo and Juliet there is much pain, loss, and death. All of the losses in the Tragedy could either be their own fault or of a higher power’s doing which is the most likely culprit.
In the movies that we watched, you could easily tell what the directors thought on perspective of fate. Through Mercutio and and Tybalt's death, the directors chose two different ways to show it. In one movie, they showed that it was obvious that there was no fate that took place during the scenes. Then in the other movie, they showed there was fate that was present during the scene. In the 1960 version of Romeo and Juliet, there showed there was a presence of fate in the scenes of the fight, but in the 1996 version, it showed that fate was not present during the scenes.
