Shakespeare was able to influence literature tremendously because he knows how to grab readers’ attention by manipulating their feelings. An important element that Shakespeare includes in his writing is tragedy, something that could cause the audience to feel pity and fear by the end of the play. Furthermore, in Shakespeare’s plays, tragedy is usually played by a tragic hero. In order for a character to be qualified as a tragic hero they would have to be defeated by their own tragic flaws, accept their consequences in the end, fall from tremendous good fortune, and can not be completely good or bad. An example of a tragic hero from Shakespeare’s work would be Marcus Brutus, Julius Caesar. Brutus is the tragic hero of Julius Caesar because his own tragic flaws of …show more content…
It also showed how virtuous Brutus is for not mistreating Antony. Consequently, Antony was able to persuade the plebians to his side and it led Brutus to his downfall of being on the good side of plebians to the bad side. For this reason, it is clear that Brutu is the tragic hero of Julius Caesar. Brutus is the tragic hero because his story ended in tragedy. Brutus ended in tragedy because the Pelebians had all turned against him and started a war. Therefore, Brutus embraced his death when he realized that he would eventually get captured. In Act V, Scene V, Brutus said, “It’s nobler to leap in ourselves than wait until they push us” (Shakespeare 5.5). This quote showcased a tragic ending because everything Brutus had done in the past was for the good of Rome, but now he has to commit suicide to save his dignity. For this reason, it proves that Brutus’s tragic ending is caused by his own flaws and choices, and it also proves that he is the tragic hero of Julius Caesar. All in all, Brutus is the tragic hero of Julius Caesar because his own tragic flaws of being altruistic and virtuous caused his tragic ending at the end of the
Brutus was the Tragic Hero in Julius Caesar he was noble, had several flaws that led to his downfall, he had a high to low moment, and then he realized his mistake which led to his death. Mark Antony stated that Brutus “was the noblest Roman of them all. ”(Julius Caesar pg.104) Brutus was the noblest one because he thought killing his best friend would protect Rome from Caesar’s powers, but the conspirators wanted Caesar dead because they were jealous of him. Brutus stated that Julius Caesar was a “serpent’s egg, which, hatched, would, as his kind, grow mischievous, and kill him in the shell.
In the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, there were many characters that had some sort of tragic downfall. A tragic flaw is a characteristic of a person that can be a good trait, but it can also lead to the downfall of a person. Brutus’s tragic flaws are something that had been going on since the very beginning of the play, and the thing that was a major tragic flaw for him was his sense of logic. Another tragic flaw of Brutus is that he trusts people too much and he is oblivious to what people's real intentions are. The only thing that was stopping Brutus from meeting a terrible end was himself.
In my opinion Brutus is undoubtedly the genuine tragic hero.
All of these elements are characteristics of a tragic hero, which qualifies Marcus Brutus as the tragic hero in Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. A tragic hero is a good or even great man and thus wins our sympathy causing catharsis. A tragic hero displays hamartia— the hero makes a mistake causing the downfall in his fortune. A tragic hero usually brings suffering and death to other characters, even a whole country. Finally, a tragic hero goes into a situation in which there is no getting out of because of the decision he has made. Marcus Brutus has all these qualities and more thus concluding that he is the tragic here in Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius
Another major aspect of a tragic hero is that he realizes his mistakes after it is too late. In the last few minutes of his life, Brutus realizes that killing Caesar was wrong. This one event ended his wife’s life and also his dear friend’s life. This leads to a monarchy, which is what the conspirators were trying to avoid in the first place. One of his slaves says, “Now is that noble vessel full of grief, /That it runs over even at his eyes,” (982). Brutus is apologetic about his actions: “I know my hour is come” (995). Brutus realizes he is reprehensible for all of his mistakes. Brutus kills himself by running into a sword that one of is slaves is holding. His final words are: “Caesar, now be still. /I killed not thee with half so good a
Moreover, Marcus Brutus displays qualities of a tragic hero because of his tragic flaw: idealism. Brutus shows his tragic flaw when he speaks to the conspirators after they assassinate Caesar, and he says,
But that slowly led to his death. Thats why one of his biggest tragic flaws is his love for Rome and his love for Caesar. Brutus was the tragic hero of the play. Brutus had multiple tragic flaws, but he also had some good things to say about

Is Brutus a tragic hero? In my opinion Brutus is very much a hero in Julius Caesar, I’m not just saying this just because of his action’s towards Caesar. A lot of people would agree that what Brutus did to Caesar is wrong, I obviously agree that it is a bad thing that he did to Caesar. What he did to Caesar resulted in many deaths, including his. He is a tragic hero because of his such strong relationship and devotion to Rome and the people in it, he also has a strong relationship to Caesar, but he favored Rome more.
In conclusion, Brutus is the tragic hero in this play because of the mistakes that he makes, the fall that he takes, and the regrets that he feels after. Brutus will forever be labeled as a
In Julius Caesar Brutus displays the traits of a tragic hero through out this play. His tragic flaw is his being too naive. He makes an error in judgment, and when this error occurred it causes his own downfall. But Brutus causes his own downfall when after killing Caesar all of Rome turns against the conspirators. And all these events cause his death. However, the factors that have made him a tragic hero are discussed below:
Other tragic heroes such as Julius Caesar and Cassius weren’t so obvious. Shakespeare has a tendency to make every character in his writings significant to how the drama plays out. In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, the most relevant tragic hero is Brutus. Brutus has a lot of conflict with his morals, beliefs, and what he thinks is the right thing to do.
Brutus is considered to be the tragic hero of the play, but another character that can be called a tragic hero is the man himself Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar can be consider as a tragic hero because of his positive attributes and his tragic and fatal flaws. Caesar’s positive traits made the people of Rome to love him. For example, Julius Caesar is great at battle and a good example of that is in the beginning of the play he just won a battle against Pompey. And he is also a great leader and he cares about Rome and its people for example according to Antony “He hath brought many captives home to Rome. Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill.” (Act III, Scene 2) meaning that Caesar captured captives to Rome for ransoms and that ransom money is given to Rome to benefit the people. His positive traits alone wouldn't make him a tragic hero to be tragic hero he needs to have a tragic flaw. His tragic flaw that would led to his downfall is his arrogance. An example of his arrogance is “Caesar shall forth. The things that threatened me Ne'er looked but on my back. When they shall see The face of Caesar, they are vanished.” (Act II, Scene 2), he is saying when the people that threatens him looks at him they all vanish because they are afraid of him. Another example after Calpurnia tells him that he shouldn't go to the senate because something bad is going to happen to him, Caesar says “Caesar should be a beast without a heart, If he should stay at home today for fear. No, Caesar shall not. Danger knows full well That Caesar is more dangerous than he.” (Act II, Scene 2) he thinks that if he stays home then he would be a coward and also he says the he is more dangerous than danger. Julius Caesar is also considered as tragic hero because he has the attributes of a tragic
The Tragedy of Julius Caesar was written by William Shakespeare in 1599. Throughout the play, it was all about the death of Julius Caesar and what he had caused for Rome. Caesar was not the only one in the play to change Rome, it was the decisions of others and the events those characters had gone through. Decius Brutus was one of the characters that had helped change the future of Rome. He had to make decisions such as if he should join the conspiracy, kill Caesar, and what was best for Rome. Brutus is considered to be one of Shakespeare’s tragic heroes. A tragic hero is a person, usually of noble birth, that suffers a catastrophe. Shakespeare’s heroes have certain aspects to them, the character has traditional elements, complexity, internal conflict, choices made rather than on fate, and reasons for the action done to solve the problem. Brutus has all of these characteristic to him and there are several reasons to why he is considered one of Shakespeare’s tragic heroes.
Brutus a high-ranking, well-regarded Roman nobleman that killed Julius Caesar, went to the top of the ranks and was crowned king. Even though Brutus was able to become king, he was not going to get that title without killing Caesar. In the play Julius Caesar, Brutus agrees to kill Caesar and is one of the three murderers that stabbed Julius Caesar. In Act III scene i William Shakespeare writes “CASCA and the other conspirators stab CAESAR. BRUTUS stabs him last.” This is when Brutus’s fate begins because he starts listening to the wrong people such as, when Cassius uses his power and authority to convince Brutus that he loves Caesar but loves Rome more. This is quoted when Shakespeare writes in Act III scene ii, “ I say to him that my love for Caesar was no less than his. If, then, that friend demands to know why I rose up against Caesar, this is my answer: it’s not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” This shows Brutus’s major flaw and when he starts to believe things that other people tell him. Brutus shows that he is the Tragic Hero right when he agrees to kill Caesar because this is his tragic flaw that begins the downfall of himself.
