Many people knew Julius Caesar as powerful and popular Roman general and statesman. Julius was born in Rome the year of 100BC, and later died in 44BC. Growing up Julius had a well-rounded family. His father, Gaius Caesar, governed the region of Asia, and his mother, Aurelia Cotta, was the noble birth. At the age of seventeen, Julius married Cornelia, the daughter of an influential politician in Rome. Then just at 31, Julius had fought in wars and become involved in Roman politics. Although some people might view Julius Caesar as a villain, he was considered to be a hero in the Roman world. Caesar won sensational victories even when he was outnumbered. “In a series of brilliant campaigns, the Roman general conquered all of Gaul and made it a Roman province” (Biography Reference Bank- military). Caesar had landed the governorship of Gaul. He quickly conquered the rest of Gaul and his four loyal armies became his source of power. With Caesar’s position, managed to be victorious over more land for the Roman Empire. Caesar’s effect for the Roman Republic made them a stronger, more advanced economy. “Rising rapidly, he campaigned successfully for the consulship in 60 B.C and struck a deal with two of Rome's leading figures, Pompey, the Great and Crassus”(Biography Reference Bank). Caesar established the early newspaper, known as the Acta Diruna. These were traditionally withheld from public view until 59 B.C. when Julius Caesar ordered their publication as part of the many populist reforms he instituted during his first consulship (history.com) .The Acta Diruna brought the public together by communicated from texts. The early newspaper was written on metal or stonewalls. It first appeared 131 B.C. and includes news events, a list of games, birth and death notices, and more. Julius Caesar changed the previous calendar to make it look like the one we use today.“Soon after becoming a Roman dictator, Julius Caesar decided that the traditional Roman calendar was in dire need of reform” (History.com).Around the seventh century B.C., the Roman calendar that people were following was the lunar cycle, which it fell out of hand with the seasons and had to be corrected. Fortunately, Caesar designed a new calendar with the help of Sosigene of Alexandria, a Greek astronomer. Together they made the calendar almost the same as the ones we currently use today.
